That height dimension is crazy, some video cards would probably be that thick by themselves. But it is very wide, which leads me to think it may be a side-by-side arrangement: a mini-ITX board is about 7" each side, a large video card is about 10"x4". So lay them both next to each other and you get the approximate dimensions given.

Side-by-side, how? That doesn't sound like "readily available components." Where would the power supply sit, then, and the hard drive, not to mention an optical disc player. Which should be an option anyway, but there would still have to be room for it. And cooling fans. And heatsinks for the CPU, not that I'm into copper monsters or water cooling, but I know they get pretty tall and Valve is claiming a high degree of customization ... 2.9" is just impossible ... it has to be a misprint of 9.2". But assuming it isn't, the engineering of this case could make it a fantastic piece of kit.

Looked up the specs on an off-the-shelf SFX form factor PSU, Silverstone gives it as 125x100x63.5 mm. This would fit in the given specs. As would a low-profile cooler - Noctua's NH-L9 gives a height on 37mm above the motherboard, fan installed, which would also fit assuming ventilation holes are drilled above the cooler. And the video card with a blower exhaust would easily fit within the height requirement. A 2.5" HDD and slimline optical drive should fit over the areas of the board not taken by the CPU cooler. (EDIT: Wait, does the Steambox even come with an optical drive?)

Now to deal with the other dimensions, it's crude MS Paint drawing time!

I used figures from a Gigabyte mini ITX board, and the Titan (which has a standard nVidia cooler, since they don't allow custom coolers anyway).

Figures are in mm, taking the longest total on each side gives 270x282 ~ 10.6 x 11.1in. Obviously there's going to be a fair bit more space between the components required so that they're not hard up against each other, but still, that's within the 12 x 12.4in spec given.

I'm not saying that this is how it'll happen, obviously, but that it *could* happen, with the only specialised thing being some sort of accommodation for a PCI-E slot (which on mini-ITX boards is hard up against the edge of the board already) to be made parallel to the plane of the motherboard.

I want certified Level 11, because it is one more than 10.

Under this system, Valve would set different levels of minimum performance that a SteamOS-machine would have to meet to earn a Valve-endorsed certification at Level 1, Level 2, and so on. Game developers, in turn, could optimize and advertise their SteamOS-powered games with a specific level in mind. Maybe the game runs best on a level-4-or-better system but can still run acceptably on any level 2 system.

System certification makes a lot of sense, I think. But no more than four levels, really. Although who gets to decide which components are capable of what level of performance might have a tough job. It would have to be full-time work for dozens of people.

What the ... ?? That's terrible. There are some things that just don't work when you try to make them "new and improved."

Tip: If you don't like the way Steam wants to "check for updates" (even in offline mode) when you start it up, try fully exiting the program before shutting down the PC. Where it's not in the systray/icon.

I have Steam disabled on bootup (msconfig), don't know if that matters, but for some reason exiting the program before shutdown = it doesn't do the update check bit. Works for both hubby and myself.

That clip kills me everytime I watch it. The tune in the background is very fitting for what's happening in the screen.

I'm contemplating scooping up Resident Evil Revelations for 50% off.  I own the game on 3DS, but I love it so much I'm willing to buy it again for PC.

It looks like exactly what you see with a touchpad. Not as precise as a mouse and limited range means quick long movements aren't possible. It is much better than an analogue stick and makes FPS viable with a gamepad, but it's not going to be as good and not competitive enough for multiplayer. I don't understand why you'd want to play these games on a couch rather than at a desk. I might want a gamepad that can act as a competent touchpad.

Maybe you wouldn't want to play those games on a couch if you're looking to be competitive in multiplayer.

But there's a ton of games not covered in that umbrella.

Yeah, that's right, I'm about to quote myself.  That's how I roll.

I'm glad I waited.  All the Resi games are 75% off today, including Revelations.

I see no Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3.

My bad.
