Saw one of the new episodes of Who, there was a middle aged ginger mockney lady screeching like the last vulture at the corpse, and some gurning, bumbling male model accompanying her. I retired to my study.

 

The 10th series of Red Dwarf wasn't bad, better than every series since 6.

 

I believe the overemphasis on Cristopher Ecclestone's gurning is also lamented - at considerable length - by Armando Ianucci.

From the description and as Karen Gillen ain't middle aged it must have been Tate/ Tennant rather than Ecclestone- who did a pretty decent job considering every episode of his except those with gasmasks was terrible. Especially those with fart jokes and laughable green aliens.

 

My main problem with nuWho was Russel T Davies' I think, more deus ex via 'Power of Love' than Frankie Goes to Hollywood's third most well known song. For both his run and Moffat's the best episodes have been from independent writers rather than the core team, ironically most of the early ones from Moffat himself (saw The Girl in the Fireplace recently and noted the parallels to the later Pond storyline) but the Curtis and Gaiman eps from the Smith (who I like a lot as the Doctor) era were my favourites.

 

And tangentially related, there's a Blake's 7 remake that has been approved for Syfy. Can't say I'm overly enthused at what I've heard of it but since I had Avon as my avatar for ages pre Macho Man I feel obligated to mention it.

Has anybody been watching Orphan Black on BBC America? It's not bad at all; the drama has a nice flow and the suspense level is good. In some respects the premise reminds me a little of Hanna (2011), albeit without the genetic enhancements. I'm curious to see where they take it.

Zoraptor: Did you catch the radio reimagining of Blake's 7? They had prequels, and I must say they were damned good. If the show is based around the same writers and so forth then I don't think you'll be disappointed.

 

On Dr Who, I know it's for kids. I get that. Just having grown up with Victorian 'cautionary' tales of blood, and torso explosions, and being burned alive I feel kids can take a lot meatier subject matter.

The one thing I have been enjoying thoroughly is the re-showing of "I Claudius" to commemorate the closing of Shepards Bush, exemplary acting, but strange lack of an ambient soundtrack to the modern ear.

I don't think they made it here, I know they had some involvement from the original writers (and some of the original actors), and I've heard good things of them. We have had weird licensing issues here, DVDs of Blake's 7 are $100 a series, about 4-5x what a season of GoT/ Breaking Bad/ similar costs.

 

The named writer for the reboot is one of the writers for Heroes. If it had been mainly writing for season 1 that might be a positive but from what I've heard he was mainly season 2-4, which weren't great.

I just can't get into Dr. Who anymore. I watched it from Jon Pertree all the way up to Colin Baker (who I thought was really underrated) but couldn't get into it with Sylvester McCoy and just can't follow this new version.  

 

You know I spend more time using my XM radio now than my TV. I bet I could do without it if I had to.

The only TV serials I've been watching regularly are The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, The Voice, and recently, The Americans. And BBC Sherlock...but they don't make episodes often. Used to watch House but that's done now, and CSI:Vegas post-Grissom just doesn't quite work for me.

 

I try other shows as they come and go, but not much captures my attention these days for more than 1-3 episodes anymore.

I've never seen Dr Who but my Dad is a big fan and Colin Baker and Daphne Ashbrook are coming to the Denver Comic Con so I need to try to get their autographs for him.

I tried watching the 1st episode of the game-inspired SyFy show "Defiance." Thought it was an hour but Comcast on-demand has been mislabeling a lot of show lengths recently....by the end of the first hour I was "meh" - maybe I'll try to watch the rest tomorrow. It was starting to get a little better into the 2nd hour but outside of having a lead male actor who knows how to deliver lines with good timing, not impressed. That said, it is marginally better than your typical SyFy original fare.

Plus, maybe if it gets going you'd take inspiration from what was happening in game online and dramatise it. Could get the fans on both angles worked up.

...saw the 1st episode of Hannibal series. Hubs didn't like the emphasis on visual effect over chr/plot, but since it's used to try to show how the Graham character mentally "sees things," it didn't bother me. My problem with the show is that the guy playing Hannibal does not in any way match my mental image of Hannibal, which I find really distracting. And I don't mean because he doesn't look like Anthony Hopkins. Because of this, I'm not sure I can watch the show. It wasn't badly done however. Except ... Laurence Fishburne added nothing to the show. I used to love him, but he wasn't that good on CSI and now this.

I'm like that too...lots of shows I've only tried because Netflix exists. And I tend to like shows (and movies) that my husband doesn't, so my watching stuff on the PC keeps us from arguing. Or if he's using the TV to play games, or if it's late at night and I want to use headphones...easier on the PC.

 

...The Voice has been the only singing show that hubby finds tolerable enough to sit through vs. leaving the room.

I started in on the 3rd season of True Blood today.  I enjoyed the first two, but haven't watched it in a long while, so I'm a bit lost.  Ah well, looking for something to replace the fact I caught up on Game of Thrones.

 

 

Quit watching now, you won't regret it!  Season four and five weren't very good, IMO, at all. 

 

I'm on the third episode of The Beast.  The only reason I'm watching it is because it's got Ragnar Lothbrok in it.

 

Aside from that, I'm halfway through the first season of Blake's 7.  It's good, but so dated I need to space out the episodes to not get overcome in the cheese factor.

 

And Friday nights aren't the same without Spartacus.  Absolutely loved the last season after the previous faltered a little.  Liam MacIntyre did very well with a tough situation.  His showdown at the end was truly epic teevee.

Caught the start of Continuum's second season.  For the big mysterious "message" that was the end of season one and seemed like a big reveal, this season opener seems quite a slow start and meandered around a lot without really sharing much.

An impressive list, I loved Banshee.

 

I recommend it to all, its very violent and HBO really  knows how to create a prison fight scene. The albino in the prison must one of scariest antagonists I have ever seen.
