Each episode is like a 15 minute crampacked pisstake of all the "thriller/procedurals" on tv, kind of mixing 24 with CSI, the Wire and various others. Then just being extremely silly with it.

I finally watched the Red Wedding episode of GOT this morning. No surprises since I've read the books several times but man... seeing it is just a shock to the system.

Venture Bros. is back. Though Cartoon Network/Adult Swim in Canada dropped the ball and isn't airing in tandem with the US, instead opting for reruns from season 1, so its getting downloaded.

I am watching the season final of the third MasterChef Australia, its so well done its way better than other MasterChef's that I've seen from other parts of the world. The hosts are so patient, knowledgeable  and interesting. They come across as completely sincere and down to earth.

 

I enjoy the South African MasterChef and we watch it religiously but it still has a long way to go to be as good as the Australian one

I am watching the TV series The Fall and I highly recommend it. Its set in Northern Ireland and its about a serial killer. Apart from the murders the protagonists have to deal with the political tensions that are prevalent for the time. This should be a "must watch" for anyone living in the UK. I really think the UK detective shows are going from strength to strength. A solid 75/100

I can't help it....I keep watching "Wicked Attraction," despite the cheesy re-enactments. I tend to find true-crime shows interesting. The profiling of deranged minds or forensics. Used to read true-crime books from the library...these days it's TV shows I guess. I tend to prefer stuff like "Forensic Files" but I watch a bit of everything in that vein, now and then.

 

Wish they'd reduce the usage of filler re-enactment stuff tho...for any reality/history genre show, not just crime. That aspect of TV just get worse and worse...

My wife loves those crime shows too and has several different ones set to record on the DVR. Theres on called Snapped which seem to be specifically about female killers. I wonder if I should be worried.

I'm watching the TV series The Following, it stars Kevin Bacon who has to stop a cult of people who have aspirations to become serial killers. This cult all idolize a real hardcore serial killer who directs and influences them surreptitiously from his jail cell in a maximum security prison. Its been entertaining so far

 

I also like the fact we are seeing more and more Hollywood actors now starring in TV series. Its testimony to the hard economic times I suppose. Some examples of this include Kevin Bacon in this series and Kevin Spacey in House of Cards (now that's a good series )

Matt Smith isn't bad, he's no David Tennant though. Canada its easy to follow. Christopher Eccleston season was on CBC on Mondays I think, then the first David Tennant season went to Space on Saturdays and Dr Who has been there ever since. Super easy with a PVR.

Arguably it's more because Moffat can't keep long running threads together well unlike RTD and less that Smith is better or worse than Tennant. Not to mention Moffat's inability to give the companions a proper denoument, WARNING SPOILERS AHOY             The if you read it it's true bit is especially silly. That makes no flipping sense given the nature of time travel and the fact that people LIE. And yet it was how he resolved the Ponds' departure. Cause, y'know, The Doctor couldn't go to an equivalent year that they traveled back to in sayyyy, New Jersey, rent a car, drive to NY, pick up the Ponds, drive back to the TARDIS, drop the Ponds off in their normal time, go back to the year they "died" in Jersey, drive back to NY, get two vagrants who died from the morgue,and plant their bodies in the cemetary with a fake headstone                    SPOILERS OVER SAFE TO READ Although Tennant does do the whiny angst bit better.

 

 

 

As to the topic at hand, currently rewatching Lie to Me with my cousins. It sucks royally that show was cancelled. Going to try and get them hooked on Black Books next.

I think it's more a factor that the increasing number of cable stations creating original content = more good roles available in series media than in film media. I read interviews all the time about how frustrated some actors are by the stupid scripts/films/roles that come their way...ones that don't let them stretch or really use their acting chops. eg, not interesting to the artist. Especially for middle-age/older actors.

 

While it may be fun and a boost to the career to be in Star Trek or The Hobbit, those types of films aren't exactly actors roles - especially when they're often ensemble casts. Whereas a TV series may be more willing to give them lead, producing credit/creative control,  etc. in order to get a bigger name for their show. I think it used to be, long time ago, sort of a "bad career move" for film star to go to TV (it was seen as a downgrade) but as that viewpoint changes, more are taking advantage of it.

The prize of my blu-ray TV collection so far, Star Trek: The Next Generation. Gradually finishing Season 3 now, until late next month when Season 4 comes out. CBS Digital has taken great pains to restore the series, frame by frame from the original 35mm. The fidelity is just ... it brings a tear to my eye. All new CG planets, digital FX, 7.1 DTS ... *sniff* 

 

Unrelated but equally endearing, Lucy Liu makes Elementary worthwhile, all on her own IMO. She has a natural stoic depth making up for Watson's kind of reticent dialogue. And I half-expect O-Ren Ishii to come out at any moment.

I guess it's a semi-autobiographical half hour comedy series by Marc Maron, on cable channel IFC. Never heard of the guy (which is a joke in the show), but with all the famous guest stars, the show has some pretty fun moments. No laugh track. And he has cats. I don't find it rip-roaring hilarious (it mixes a bit of drama in here and there) but I like the angry-man yet low-key satire. I think the guest-stars overshadow Maron a bit too much however, which may not be good in the long term. But if there's a 2nd season, I'd be curious how it develops.

Watched another episode of Arrow. Everyone I know that watches the show keep telling me it's great. I don't know, I'll probably end up watching all episodes but it's an okay TV show at most. The action parts are well done, I guess.

Finished watching Zero Hour. I think it was cancelled after the second episode but thankfully they aired all 13 episodes. Seems they tried to pull the best parts out of The Da Vinci Code, National Treasure and Raiders of the Lost Ark, mashed it all together and out came a TV series that didn't work.
