Live recorded music, Poll 2.0

  1. 1. Which types of live recorded music do you think are viable for Project Eternity?

    • There should be no live recorded music: it will divert money from other parts of the game
      54
    • Small ensembles and soloists recordings
      42
    • Small ensembles and soloists with maybe some cheaper orchestra for parts where it's really needed
      85
    • I prefer full orchestral score
      93
    • I don't care
      36
  2. 2. What do you think about uncommon medeival/ancient musical instruments?

    • I'm opposed to hiring musicians to do live recordings with medieval/ancient instruments: it diverts money from other parts of the game
      56
    • I want some live recordings of uncommon medieval/ancient musical instruments in the game's score
      62
    • I want many live recordings of uncommon medieval/ancient musical instruments in the game's score (if it is not too expensive)
      71
    • I want as many live recordings of uncommon medieval/ancient musical instruments in the game's score as possible
      48
    • I don't care

Please tell me "live music" doesn't necessarily mean "classical orchestra". The choice of using a classical orchestra should be a stylistic one, not purely a matter of budget. I'm not saying PE shouldn't use a classical orchestra, just that this choice should be based on stylistic considerations.

I'm not sure if you're confusing the word classical with the era, or if you just don't like orchestral music. The orchestra itself is an entity of great power and a weird freak of nature. There are section number changes to every orchestra and some instrument exceptions, but almost always the same. Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, and Strings. I have my preferences in details but not need to go into that. I think it's safe to say the choices are in good hands with Justin and others at Obsidian.

Neither. I'm saying I hope "live music" doesn't necessarily mean using a classical orchestra, because that should be a stylistic choice rather than one based purely on budget.

I'm hoping for period instruments myself.

And live tavern music is a must--preferably with partially inebriated musicians.

The KS Collector's Edition does not include the Collector's Book.

Oh, okay. Gotcha. Sorry, it just now clicked. I was thinking style as in the classical style rather than a broader stroke of it being 'orchestral' music, therefore defining it's instrumentation.

I wouldn't worry about that either though. A lot of times live orchestras are recorded and still paired with synths and other things to give the track a fresh flavor. TV shows do this all the time.

Justin, you glorious bastard, you did it! You managed to convince the management to back us poor lowly live instrumentation lovers. You are the man! Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!

I don't think it actually needs "live" recordings as long as the artist(s) who are making the music are good enough to create the atmosphere the game deserves.. if that does mean adding a few live recordings here and there.. that's fine.. but I wouldn't want money thrown away on specialist musicians who demand a high price because they're the only person in the world who knows how to play a specific instrument from ancient times..

I don't like a massive classical orchestra as much as a decent solo track. Often times when a battle is imminent, a huge orchestra plays epic music - that's not so much my cup of tea, but I don't mind it if its well done. I'd rather like to hear the drums of war and very deep sounding war horns (I don't actually know what these are called)

Oh man, what a day! We. Did. It!

Live instruments will be in the score and you guys played a big part of that. Even for those of you who feel that this is an unnecessary cost, I still appreciate the fact that you came on here and voiced your opinion. To you guys, I assure you, this stretch goal will not detract from the main game in any way.

I've been inspired by this conversation, and others that we've had on this forum, and it's really helped me think everything through. I have some great ideas now for how the score for PE will sound. I also know we won't be able to please everyone with the score, though I do know that we will do the best we can to make something that we hope you will enjoy! No matter what it takes, that's the goal.

The dust still hasn't settled from this amazing day. Thanks to all you guys who supported PE, we really did have an AMAZING day. But I'm eager to get a backer update out there about our plans for the score. We'll see. It will come, I just don't know when. Keep talking about this, I want to hear what's on your mind. In the meantime, work on South Park remains, and that game is going to be awesome too!

So yeah. Thanks awesome music supporters.

The right music doesn't necessarily require an orchestra, or even that it be played on the instrument it was written for. Case in point:

I wouldn't be opposed to the score for this game being played on modern instruments eg. electric guitar, though admittedly my taste in music is pretty eclectic.

It was an amazing day. You guys must have been so stoked watching that surge of donations come pouring in.

Anyway, thank you for taking the time to talk with us about P:E's music. It means a lot that you go to the trouble to do so. I can't wait to see what you (or whoever ends up scoring the music) will come up with!

It would be awesome if we could get a sneak peak or two along the way; That said, I'm not expecting anything in the next few months.

Also, I'm so happy the live recordings made it into the game! The music is probably the number 1 reason for me instantly falling in love with the old IE games, as silly it may sound from a *gamer* perspective.

I'm not too musically inclined, but I think if you go all out to organise a fully orchestrated track it just diverts unnecessary money away from the project, when personally it never really seems to matter too much if is or not, just seems to be bragging rights. There's been lots of examples of great soundtracks without an orchestra and those that advertise about having one just aren't interesting (although honestly not many come to mind, infinite undiscovery is one of the few that I know of) what matters is the composition (?) not the method.

Instead I opt to say the main theme and a few key events that have a unique score should be orchestrated if it enhances the experience and impact of those scenes. Maybe a couple extra for the limited edition audio CD too. That's just my shallow two cents anyway.

Still I'm sure those who have a better ear for this sort of thing will appreciate the choices made.

I normally play on my full pc setup then with headphones and even then I rarely pay that much attention to the music. Normally with everything else going on in the house it's just additional noise. Saying that, I'll be happy to listen to the intro :p

One of my greatest loves is a properly conducted full orchestral score. A good example is SMG. I sewar, the music changed that game for me from one of the best platformers I'd ever played, to probably the best platformer I'd ever played.

Recording the orchestra live adds a layer of depth to the music that you just don't get anywhere else - especially if where it is recorded has spectacular acoustics.

People severely seem to underestimate the impact of music in games in my opinion, but you have to look at it as a whole package. You can't have a game that is all gameplay, or all graphics, all music or all story. To make a truly spectacular game, you need to have a balance of all of them, and music is sadly quite often the one that gets left behind. The only place that it doesn't seem to be ignored more often than not (in the sense of its normally nothing special in mainstream gaming) is in the indie game circles, in my experience. Fez for one, the game hit me and left an impression largely due to the music setting a perfect atmosphere. I mentioned Mario Galaxy earler, but another one that sticks out orchestrally for me is SotC. The music for that completely changes the feel of the game, and again, it just brings the whole thing together.

What is annoying though is how music is fully appreciated in film, but not in games. I mean, Inception - god, I listen to the soundtrack of that on a day to day basis.

Mind you, I'm not saying the entire thing should be fully orchestrated in the sense of every song is an epic, you need to have a balance - as every good sound designer knows. But it shouldn't be passed over for the sake of cost. Both of the other popular poll options very bluntly say "Orchestra or put money elsewhere," and it's worrying me how many people are severely underestimating how much the music does for a game. I'd much rather have better music than an extra two or three levels to a dungeon, because the rest of the game will be all the more memorable.

Also damn, I didn't expect to type that much, lol.

Heh, I'm a big fan of Garmarna's version of Herr Mannelig :)

Garmarna is one of the very few "real" groups I listen to, mostly I just listen to game/movie soundtracks. Although it's been quite some time now since a movie soundtrack managed to grab me, they mostly just use boring underscore stuff. So it's mostly game soundtracks :p

I really love Drakensang's music and Divinity 2's.

Obsidian ‏@Obsidian Current PayPal status: $140,000. 2,200 backers

"Hmm so last Paypal information was 140,000 putting us at 4,126,929. We did well over and beyond 4 million, and still have an old backer number from Paypal. 76,186 backers. It's very possible that we have over 75,000 backers if I had new Paypal information. Which means we may have 15 Mega dungeon levels, and we already are going to have an amazing game + cats (I swear I will go stir crazy if Adam doesn't own up to the cats thing :p)."

Switching to Paypal means that more of your money will go towards Project Eternity. (The more you know.)

Paypal charges .30 cents per transaction and 2.2% for anything over 100,000 per month for U.S currency. Other currency is different, ranging from anywhere between 2.2-4.9%.

Kick Starter is a fixed 5% charge at the end.

Only loosely related, but I'll tell you what I really hate about music in some games. You're strolling along, when suddenly epic orchestral battle music starts. You get your sword/fireball hands ready, look around, expecting a dragon or a bunch of orcs or at least a rival adventuring party, only to discover you're being attacked by *insert ****ty low level enemy here*. Massive anticlimax.
