We'll see about DA4 (the trailer being a trailer and not necessarily representative of how the game will be), but I disagree about BG3 and DA4 being the same in cinematics. There is no RPG out there, including upcoming games, that even comes close to BG3's extent of cinematics. Larian themselve have boasted about the extent of cinematics in their game, claiming a whopping 175+ hours of cinematics that they recorded for their game (and that was before all the post-release updates and patches). And therein lies the real issue, because I'm not opposed to some cinematics in a AAA RPG. It's that BG3 has gone so far into cinematics that for me effectively the game is far too much like watching a movie than playing a game.

That 175+ hours includes all permutations and counts dialogue scenes as cinematics, there aren't 175+ hours of cutscenes. Counting dialogue scenes there's probably 10-20 hours of cinematics in a playthrough, discounting dialogues I'd be surprised if there was more than an hour total cutscenes stretched out over a playthrough (which took me 85+ hours, not counting reloads or reroll). On that BG3 playthrough I can confidently say I spent more time fighting or exploring more than I did talking or watching cutscenes and it certainly felt different than watching a movie.

I'd think a gameplay trailer should be at least somewhat representative of how a game will play, and based on that DAV's gameplay trailer it looks like Bioware is going for the cinematic cutscene and cinematic dialogue heavy games they've been doing consistently since Mass Effect 2. There's nothing wrong with that, for me at least the bigger problem with DAV is less that it's set up in the same way as ME3 or DAI but in that it's doubled down on action combat in a way that doesn't look particularly interesting.

Fair enough.

As far as combat goes, though, per what's in that Gameinformer article, seems like they have done a good job of evolving real-time action combat into something that's fun. If you don't like RT action combat, then sure, you're not going to be a fan. It's no different than for me with my utter dislike of TB combat. As far as I am concerned, the worst RT action combat system is way better than the best TB combat system.

Considering it allegedly started as 4 player coop one could say it is getting scaled up.

What would've made more sense as a vestigial aspects of a 4 person co-op game is a party of four. Not four wholeass companions for the whole game.

Fishlabs - acquired by Embracer in 2018 alongside their parent company Koch Media, nowadays Plaion - were among those burned by "Project Phoenix", first losing a dozen people in September 2023, and then around half their remaining workforce in November. In the process of these reductions, Embracer also binned off two video game projects – a sumptuous sci-fi metroidvania that was in full development, and a "visual prototype" for a brand new Red Faction game.

The "Clicker" tag explains why I had not heard of the game. Thanks to the Steam Ignore list, it auto-removes this from being shown to me. Alas, the limit of only 10 tags forces me to choose between what I dislike less, Rogue-likes or Sokobans (?). And low-quality anime porn, some game about round fruits (Saika? Saiko?), and that Twitch platformer (with abstract platforms suspended in the air) do not have dedicated tags. I also ran out of the publisher-specific Ignore list (50 entries, I think).

Granted, at this point, I am going with my allow-list - there are too many releases per day to actually process what might be worth attention.

With games like Crow Country being successful, I hope we get to see more old-school survival horror games.

Looks like Arenanet is caving in to popular demand... at last as far back as I remember, people have been clamouring for "player housing" in the game. Looks like they listened... 10 years late, but they listened 😁

Do be fair, it looks like a number of neat ideas are getting added to it. I know I'll love that "collect all resources" button once it gets implemented!

Not quite as much as I used to half a year ago, but I still play in an organized group on some week days (wvw, i.e. world vs world which is the large scale pvp). The banter alone in Discord is worth the price of entry 😂

There's no genre like the open world for inducing choice paralysis, so it's fitting that I've been agonising over how to begin this irregular article series on open world games for months. I have a lot of material, oodles of interviews with developers of all shapes and sizes - big shops like Remedy and CD Projekt, smaller studios like Ace Team and Awaceb, all holding forth on such topics as whether Elden Ring or Zelda did bandit camps better, and how you make a forest feel endless. There is so much you could talk about, so many trails heading off in all directions, but perhaps it's best to begin with the more personal and superficial question that inspired this investigation: how did the open world game get so boring?

Not news, but I thought it was interesting to share. It is also somehow disappointing to see the logic of the larger developers (Bethesda/Zenimax). Morrowind is still very much playable and enjoyable, while the sense of exploration and wonder moved from the Ubisoft-style map icon fests to Souls-likes (to some of them) and immersive sims.

One thing that turns me off a little bit is maybe(?) the art style again. Same situation as with Outer Worlds, something about it just feels off to me. Somehow there is a really high contrast between the colors? Kinda hope it's just the screenshots I've seen so far.

Last game I've played from them was Risen 2 and it was... ok-ish at best. So I guess this development was inevitable. They lost their edge years ago.
