You might want to search for partial-reinforcement extinction effect or author/researcher Ashley Merryman's research for negative impacts (here's an article from her: https://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2016/10/06/should-every-young-athlete-get-a-trophy/forget-trophies-let-kids-know-its-ok-to-lose) I think Carol Dwick from Stanford has done research that is cited to be pro-participation (or more appropriately, effort) trophies. She was cited in a Huffington Post article that gets referenced a lot - https://www.huffingtonpost.com/jason-powers/science-says-participatio_b_8054046.html Note I think Dwick's actual research is along the lines of the 1998 study that TN cites - that students who were praised for challenging themselves (regardless of whether they succeeded) continued to challenge themselves while students praised for an innate quality (intelligence) were less likely to challenge themselves lest they disprove their innate quality.

Most public colleges and universities could lower the cost of tuition if the states weren't actively cutting funding (going on now for a decade at least). But funding is one of the ways state/local governments are able to control universities, and politicians love control of things. That's why they sabotaged tenure when they could ("Let us get rid of these bad teachers with tenure by ending tenure!" is really saying "Lets get rid of the teachers who don't follow my political philosophy or say things that are inconvenient because right now I can't get rid of them when they say mean things about my scorched earth policies!" since the average bad teacher would never get tenure as its not granted at a whim). And its why they try to do end runs to take control over schools and systems through legislation. For example, if the government can take their existing power to control how much money the state gives colleges and universities and combine it with the power to prevent those colleges and universities from being self-sufficient on their own through raising tuition and fee ('Because education is getting our of reach of the average American family we must not allow the colleges and universities to keep raising tuition and fees!") then they've ensured that higher education in that state (excepting pricey private schools) is under the control of the legislators and not the 'academics', unless those academics want to find their college or university without state funding and no way to generate the loss through tuition and fees.

I'm guessing the campaign slogan will be "Who do you think is the lesser of the two evils are now?" Then again, it doesn't seem like the Dems are really ramping anyone else up.

I knew who Best was. There were a bunch of interviews with him in the lead-up to Phantom Menace coming out, so I'm not sure he was a nobody to SW fans. It has sounded (for years) that Best took criticism of Jar Jar personally, but IIRC from those interviews he created a lot of stuff for the character, and so probably had a high feeling on investment in JJ. And I have seen criticism over the years that DID target him specifically in the Jar Jar hate.

My argument was against KT believing that no one having a choice was "better" than women having a choice and men not having a choice BECAUSE men didn't have a choice in the latter scenario. If he'd argued that men should be able to opt out of a parental role for an unwanted child prior to the birth of the child/prior to the termination period ending and in that scenario he'd be okay with abortion then it would have been a consistent argument. Or to look at it another way, in his preferred scenario where no one can choose to terminate a pregnancy, the man will have to be vigilant lest they produce offspring they don't wish to or financially can't support. Which, it seems, is also the case as well in his lesser preference choice. In fact from the man's POV there's no real difference in the scenarios.

Or, you know, as a man you could accept that if you perform an act of procreation with a woman that you've already assumed the responsibility for any children that act might produce, rather than assume that as a dude you should get to Free Willy (said the actress to the bishop) whenever you want with no consequences. ts a novel idea, I know, but it might be a better one than advocating for the removal of something because "men have no choice" for an alternative where men also will have no choice as if that's somehow "better". YMMV.

Just so long as you know that this was all in the comics and not some kind of SJW agenda that they're trying to force via streaming a new show for current politics and what not. The characters have literally always been this since they first appeared in the early 80's. I recall they were never exactly popular though so, I'm very surprised that they're just now making a fuss of them. Then again, since X-Men was ruined, they gotta fill the void anyway they can. This is BS and you know it. In the comics Tyrone didn't lose a brother and he wasn't rich kid and Tandy wasn't a street kid. The show is basically a complete rewrite of C&D origin story. IIRC Tyrone was from a poor family and Tandy was from a rich family. Both were runaways (but not Marvel's Runaways, that's a completely different series). Tyrone ran away after his best friend Billy was shot by cops. Tandy ran away because she was (arguably) a victim of parental neglect. Tyrone initially was going to rob Tandy out of desperation but stopped someone else from robbing her instead. Tandy and Tyrone were offered shelter and Tandy accepted; Tyrone went along thinking that Tandy was getting herself into trouble. Tyrone was right and both were given an experimental drug that ended up giving them superpowers. Seems like the writers decided to flip flop elements (Tyrone being rich, Tandy not; Billy being a brother rather than a friend) - maybe they felt the original origin was too stereotypical?

It wasn't as good as Westworld but I still enjoyed the awesome 70's vibe. IMO Futureworld has a number of problems with it. Yul Brynner really shouldn't have been in it (his dream sequence serves no point) and the story itself is kind of half-baked. Its okay if you like 70s sci-fi, it has a lot of that look and vibe; its more LOGAN'S RUN feel than WESTWORLD though. I've watched it a few times and its enjoyable in its way, but its not really a patch on Westworld. I'd also recommend skiping the TV Show BEYOND WESTWORLD unless you're a fan of James McMullan or Connie Sellica. Or unless you want to see a show where the meglomaniacal villain goes from working with dozens of robots out of his TV-Budget James Bond Lair in the beginning to working with a single hinch-robot out of a Winnebego by the end.

I watched the LAST JEDI again and I still don't see what all the hate is about. Then again I didn't get the hate for Phantom Menace either, I think structurally TLJ is better than TPM. And that's not saying that I don't think TJL has problems, but the fan backlash against it is, IMO, far greater than the amount of problems it has. If anyone wants to check my Star Wars street cred, I watched the original movie in a drive-in theater on the original release.

Alternatively we all could choose to quit derailing the topic by creating posts where we try to figure out why someone has personal taste if we all wished. Its a crazy idea, but it just might work.
