Ive got an Intel E6600 too.. a ridiculous amount of power for little money. AMD's glory days are over, and thats from a man whove run AMD exclusively since the Thunderbird

My old WD 160gb got a bit of a bang while moving so its developed quite a glitch and needed to be replaced. Unfortunantly I was only able to get this on such short notice: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=196 I would have gone for the 500gb but theyre sold out. I hate noise so the Raptor was out of the question.

Wii Outsold PS3 In Japan By More Than 2:1
Kaftan Barlast replied to Diogo Ribeiro's topic in Computer and Console
Id just like to add to the debate that neither Sony or Microsoft are making a loss with their current consoles, nor have they done with their previous ones. Its just a bunch creative mathematics and PR, if they made a loss selling consoles, they wouldnt do it. Regarding the whole "hardware worth 400 selling for only 200"; if you buy one unit of ChipX it will cost $5, if you make a deal to purchase 10 million units of ChipX, you will be able to buy them for $0.05 per unit instead. And so on. -
As long as a computer is riven by programmed software that dictates its actions, it can never be considered intelligent or self-aware even if it was capable of mimicing human behaviour.

is there a difference between rpg and fps anymore?
Kaftan Barlast replied to Kalfear's topic in Computer and Console
But none of those games made me want to shoot random civilians just because it was so damn fun to do combat. And DeusEx had a really piss-poor system, I just used the "lightsabre" all the time because all the other weapons were so laggy and devoid of precision that I was wondering if JC Denton might be seriously handicaped. I remember one gun was especially awful, it fired exactly 5 shots no matter how you clicked your mouse and it had so much lag that you wondered if your mouse was broken. -

Personally, if we cant have turn-based combat like in FO or ToEE, then Id rather have twitch. Combat in the IE games and NWN1&2 got boring real fast because you as a player dont have much input. And no one seems capable of designing a fun twitch 1st/3rd person combat system either. Gothic, DeusEx, Oblivion, Bloodlines.. boring and sometimes very awkward. You need not only perfect control of what youre doing but also so many available moves that it doesnt get tedious Ive been secretly thinking of new ways to design RPF gameplay for OEs new alien game, it requires some major out-of-the box thinking. Since you need to have both the realtime action elements of "Aaargh!" as the Aliens chase you down corridors and in airducts, whilst at the same time implement a tactical squad-based gameplay on top of it that has to have connection to a stats system thats interesting and meaningful -
Ive just made the order for my upgrade! As with last time, this is sort of an emergency upgrade since my old hardware broke completely. Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz Socket LGA775, 4MB Asus P5B-E PLUS, iP965, Socket-775 TwinMOS DDR2 PC4200 2048MB Dual Pack KIT Since there are no midrange Nforce680 available yet, that was not an option. You might think I was cheap in getting PC4200 RAM but C2D processors with FBS 1066MHZ are actually faster with that RAM

But.. if there existed a computer that in every way responded to you talking to it exactly like a human(it would seem to get angry if you provoked it, or sad if you abused it and it could hire a lawyer to sue you), but you could see from the code on the screen that it was just processing variables based on your input.. would it be alive? conscious? deserving of rights?

When Hemingway killed himself, they got him to be declared not mentally aware and responsible for his actions so they could give him the whole Catholic thing. Tricksy dat, although I dont think very many people who kill themselves are at their full mental capacity

I got it for Christmas, it seems ok but I not sure about the longterm fun

Does Obsidian intend to make an RPG like FO?
Kaftan Barlast replied to roshan's topic in Computer and Console
In the original Fallout, you have to get the water chip and go to deal with the Master. Actually, you don't even have to do the second part if you want to join the Master's army. Considering the enormous amount of content you can skip or do in any order, it's a very big exception to what you suggested. Since it's the topic of the thread, I think it's worth noting. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yup, my argument doesnt hold water there. -
You mean its a REAL friggin' BAR??! I thought it was an airsoft gun

Im actually a very moral man, Ive read my Kant and Schopenhauer and was raised on secular humanism. Despite that, people automaticly assume Im a wicked person. Copyright violations is one thing, but Im otherwise completely ethical "

Fallout is not structured like this at all. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It was my clumsy way to put it. Would it be fair to say that Fallout relies on a set of conditions that must be met to progress the main story? Like "If G.E.C.K = found, then Arroyo=kidnapped". To me, it feels the same since Arroyo wont be raided by the enclave until youve found the GECK. But to expand on my example; it doesnt have to be chapters, it can be anything: in Oblivion it is pieces needed to do the ritual, in KoTOR it is planets. In the Fallout games its locations. And you dont necessarily have to play everything in one instance to progress to the next. -

I think "non-linearity" is overrated. Thus far, in the history of gaming, it just means that instead of having a story progress like this Begin-Chapter1-Chapter2-Chapter3-End you get Begin-Choose any one chapter to play until youve played all three-End The differance is superficial at best, but restricts the dramatic keys a developer can use to piece together a good story. It also brings some serious "suspension of disbelief" issues in that you may leave in the middle of saving a castle from being overrun by demons, come back three weeks later and everyoe will still be shouting about saving the duke before its too late(example: oblivion). -
Im going to upgrade this Christmas aswell, I have to since my old desktop broke(chipset failiure). I have everything under control except: Which is the best Motherboard/Chipset for Intel Core 2 Duo CPU's? It should cost around $200, is the new nVidia NForce600 good? I was going for an intel based mobo until I saw it was just released

What books are you reading these days?
Kaftan Barlast replied to Oracle of Mythos's topic in Way Off-Topic
Last book I read was Guilou's "Madame Terror" on a plane, I wish I would have picked something a little more... worth reading but I cant really focus on something like "Brothers Karamasov" with a baby vomiting next to me and engine noise at 80db ringing in my ears (regarding that book- dont read it. its the litterary equivalent of a McDonalds meal. It goes right through you and leaves you wondering wether those 3hours would have been better spent starng on a cloud and drooling ) -
If prostitution was legal, this is what you would get down at the unemployment office: -Im fresh out of college and I havent been able to find any work on my own so I thought Id see whats available? -Well, have you thought about a career in sucking old men's ***? It would suit a young man like you perfectly, lots of personal freedom, no fixed workhours etc. -That sounds great, except for that part about sucking old man' ***. -Well, I guess you could take it up the dumper too, thats between you and the client to decide. -Dont you have any jobs that doesnt involve old man's ***? -Let me check...no. -Well, I dont want to suck old or any other form of *** for a living! -Im sorry to hear that, but do I need to remind you that refusing a job offer is illegal in accordance to the new ***-act of 2007?

Dang it! I arent datin' no godless commie bastard!! -
Firefly was lame, it was slightly more evovled than Buffy or Angel but you could still see where it was comming from. Cowboys in space? Mmm... It also had a really atrocious theme. And the market for MMO's is already oversaturated. The number of payers/consumers is pretty much fixed and unless you can make both the best MMO and the greatest PR hype in the history of mankind, people will keep playing WoW and ignore everything else. Also 99% of MMO players do not play more than one MMO at the same time so you have to literally knock the opposition off the market
