  1. Why, the Terrible One is Odin the Allfather, of course! He "rode" Yggdrasil for nine days, a sacrifice from himself to himself, and from this experience came away with the runes. Havamal! The question on my mind is, having given his sword to Skirnir as a reward for delivering word of his desire/threats to Gerd, why didn't Freyr make another one or have a replacement made by the dwarves?
  2. Saving the extras for expansion packs/sequels will let Obsidian get a handle on QA, so I'm OK with their decision. If QA is less than robust, however, I'll be amongst the first backers asking, "What the heck happened?". Break out the buffing compound and elbow grease, ladies and gentlemen!
  3. I don't categorically hate the idea of a stamina drain associated with the summoned creature(s), but it does raise some concerns. The whole point of summoning a creature is usually to add some combat ability to the party. Should the cost be too high you're left with a depleted summoner and the creature isn't around long enough to do all that much good. Also, what happens when an already stamina-depleted summoner calls forth a creature to bolster the party because the summoner needs to take a breather? If stamina is drained from the caster, then only fresh casters need consider calling up anything to aid the party and they're generally the ones in least need of another ally. It's the hard pressed casters who'd suffer most if the drain was significant, so wouldn't this drain obviate summoning as a viable tactic much of the time?
  4. This is very gratifying news, indeed. It's always good to have an ace up your sleeve for those times when your party needs some extra muscle. Thanks for the update.
  5. *sprays Kiddy-Be-Gone at Candid* I'm sure there's a JRPG out there that caters to your taste, but the overwhelming majority of us in this particular thread have issues with arms and panoplies that we wouldn't want to use in a Renaissance Fair or Hurstwic melee.
  6. Using the classic letter grading system (A-B-C-D-F with C as an honest average right in the middle of the bell curve), I'll be pleased if you can make a wizard into a C+/B- fighter, a cleric into a C+/B- rogue, etc... If the classes are any more "flexible" than that, then I'd have to question why Obsidian even bothered with a class system to begin with if character class doesn't mean all that much in terms of what you can do with a particular player character of a given class.
  7. Keep in mind, though, that to actually achieve 17th level and all of that power in a PnP group wasn't all that common. It's a different story in a cRPG where such rarified heights ain't so rare.
  8. Flails are tops in my book for making the statement that you care only for the damage you're inflicting upon your enemy and care not a whit about what they're trying to do to you. Even beyond a greataxe, the flail has a certain savage mystique to it. Swords, maces, and axes are all to a greater or lesser degree more suitable for parrying, fighting defensively, and may be held at the ready for quite some time. Flails rely on constant movement to be effective. In RPG terms, you'd better be a Str./Con.(endurance) focused individual if you're going to specialize in flails. Edit: I've been a member of the NRA since 1991, so "getting all NRA" is who I am and what I do.
  9. And when I obtained my Concealed Pistol License the police officer running the certification course recommended a similar knife for exactly the reasons stated by Woldan. Some of us recognize that the world can be a dangerous place and are proactive when it comes to self-defense...and others are willing victims. Preach as you please in the Off Topic forums, but keep your self-righteous aichmophobia out of a thread on weaponry.
  10. I'd very much like to hear a bit more regarding Talent Land as it firms up over the next few months as everything thus far has been about combat, combat, combat. There's not much roleplaying to be enjoyed while fighting and roleplaying, not combat, is #1 in my book. Combat has its merits and is a great underpinning for the adventure, but I'm at least as keen on what's known as non-combat skills & feats in D&D 3.X and Pathfinder. And thanks for the reply!
  11. Amen to that, brother! Apparently Obsidian needs to dust off their AD&D collection and spend an evening reacquainting themselves with the roots of the IE series of games.
  12. Let's have a look at The Front Line next as I'd like to see how the fighter and barbarian compare and contrast with the rogue and ranger in terms of their abilities and tactical niches. Edit: It's very gratifying to see the animal companion receive a solid measure of attention.
  13. I don't mind the idea of romance written into the game, but I most certainly do like that cat.
  14. Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander, so let's hope that on the two highest of the four difficulty settings that FF is the default. Am I correct in assuming that there will be something similar to the system in NWN2 in which we could tune the spellcasting behavior of our companions?
  15. Oh, you silly, silly man! Flee in fear for your sanity!
  16. The words get tossed around quite a bit on these and other gaming forums, but immersion and verisimilitude take a swift kick to the 'nads whenever the non-combatants stand around with their collective thumb up their rump whilst fire, frost, lightning, and acid are being tossed around with abandon by two or more groups intent on killing each other. Salt is rubbed in the wound when the civic guard then goes mindlessly hostile because of the civilian deaths and a re-load is forced upon the player through no fault of their own. Yeah, let's avoid this, please.
  17. It is my fervent desire that... ...are sorely disappointed by the lack of Monty Haul swag in PoE. Silver is supposed to be the standard coin. Gold, exquisitely wrought jewelry, precious stones, and magical items of any sort should never become commonplace be it at low-, mid-, or high-level play. As stated by others previously, a Monty Haul campaign quickly diminishes that which should be significant to the characters. That said, I do hope that there's a bit of scripting here and there that'll give our PC gear in which we are specializing. There's nothing quite so disappointing as finding all sorts of gear for your companions (or not, thus leading to more selling), but never finding the axe, flail, polearm, hide armor, etc. that you've specialized in for tactical or roleplaying purposes.
  18. Nonsense. Any cat with an owner willing to drop money on feline barding probably has a "kitty condo" in the living room the size of a credenza. Poor cat? Ha! Lucky, pampered cat is likely closer to the mark.
  19. Ah, I do miss Planescape--D&D as philosophical bull session. Edit: not much philosophy in link, but a good storyline nonetheless.
  20. Your estrogen levels are falling, hence the suppressive effect it has upon your undeveloped hair follicles is lessening.
  21. And this is precisely why we're here instead of out there amongst the masses busily preoccupied with grinding/leveling, mandatory powergaming, having virtual love affairs with female characters that are at least 90% certain to be the property of a male gamer, and calling each other various derogatory epithets during intra-party strategy sessions. Bless you, Obsidian!
  22. During the first run I'll want to see who's available and will default to Obsidian's companions exclusively. On the second and subsequent runs I'll likely include one or two of my own companions if I have a special player character in mind to whom said self-created companions would be complementary. I enjoy conversations and banter too much to ever create a complete party of my own--such would quickly get boring.
  23. Gotta like that first one as I've always thought that flanged maces had an element of elegance to them despite the fact that they're bone breakers.
  24. What's the name of the first one: "beautiful-woman-picture"? Hubba, hubba!
