The (un)usefullness of mages
NerdBoner replied to TrashMan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
this kind of whining makes me think you have obviously never played infinity engine games, either that or you just don't know how to play mages...because if you did you'd know that mages and sorcerer's were so damn overpowered they were near game breaking. soloing a mage through Baldur's gate is easy peezy, soloing a fighter a cleric or a bard? not so much... -
Player skill vs Character skill
NerdBoner replied to Jarmo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
this is a rather unexpected topic from what i thought was a veteran crpg community... i would hope, and assume, that player skills come into play only when solving puzzles (perhaps aided by character intellect) and when using tactics in battle...the rest of the time it should be character skill. lets be real, how many of us know sh1t about tracking? i assume that will be a character skill, not a player one. yeah, i like the idea of magic being taxing on the body and mind through fatigue much more than spell cool-down and/or sleep memorization magic (vancian)... i'd say go even further with it: for example, once a mage reaches a fatigue breaking point he can continue casting spells but suffers an increasingly higher % rate of outright death (or perhaps even insanity aka going berserk) by doing so. It will make you really have to pick your battles and whether or not the encounter is worth your life (especially if resurrection is difficult to come by - as it should be) edit: fatigue beyond a certain point of course can only be removed through rest or perhaps a special ritual etc. (not cocaine stamina potions)

Experience/leveling system
NerdBoner replied to Black's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I'd so prefer it if they were actually 2-3 months from launch and this Kickstarter stuff was just so the dev team can treat themselves to a truckload of cocaine and call girls. -
what, they have sewers in the wilderness now? no? then yeah, we'll be seeing a city.

NWN was all prefab 3D models and tileable terrain, which made it easy to design an accessible toolset. From what I understand (and I could be way off here, but whatever this is the place for speculation), PE backgrounds will be a mix of large pre-rendered scenes done in some combination of 3D and art softwares and "true" 3D models (with animations, lighting normals and whatever else the renderer will need to draw the scene). The pre-rendered backgrounds themselves probably will not be just straight images - likely they will need to contain proprietary data for lighting and pathfinding, among other stuff. It doesn't sound like PE can support a similar type of toolset as NWN, and unless you are 3D artist with the right software it probably won't be easy to modify maps at all. That said, they could offer a measure of mod-ability by exposing their data, art assets and formats - I just wouldn't expect anything near to the NWN toolkit. In fact, I'd be pretty suprised if there was an announcement of any sort of toolkit, even a rudimentary one (as much as I would like it). not even an Infinity Engine Editor Pro or a WeidU?

I can't tell you how many awesome, purely awesome, mods of ALL types came from what was frankly a less than stellar single player game (when compared to its IE predecessors). IMO it spawned a short golden age in the cRP community that allowed Joe (or Josephina) Average to tell some great stories and implement some truly fun gameplay mechanics. I played long multi-module campaigns comparable to the IE greats in terms of storytelling and gameplay as well as smaller, more impact-full mods that i remember to this day. if it's not possible with the current funding I'd really like to see that as a stretch goal. A healthy modding community, well equipped with the proper tools can make a game last far beyond it's years...truly a project "Eternity"...

I'll probably only play a Human fighter and get bored of the game 15 minutes in because it makes me read too much.
