  1. What should have happened is that if no allies are around, then enemies start beating on your knocked out ally, killing it permanently and ending the combat. (Although I suppose people would have complained to no end about it because OMG I don't want my dudes dying.)
  2. Depends on how you define "memorable". Pillars characters talk like real-ish people, generally. BG1 characters talked like badly/over-the-top roleplayed characters from a particularly cheesy D&D game (good god the awful "I like/loathe character X!" stuff, it's cringeworthy). But because BG1 was a lot sillier, there was all the "Go for the eyes, Boo!" and so on. It's true. They are different. But you won't remember any PoE character lines in 15 years, I'll tell you that much. I do also appreciate the more 'realistic' nature of the PoE style. However when a game gives you lines you remember...well, for the rest of your life, you can't deny it's got a certain appeal. My favourite is Montaron - "What part of 'I'm a loner' do ye NOT UNDERSTAND!!" But I recently took on Shar-teel in BG1 for the first time EVER (hundreds of hours played). I think I'm in love. Now that's replayability! There are some excellent, Torment-y lines in POE. E.g. ask Eder why he still believes in a dead god.
  3. There are places that do this. We should, too, but nobody's volunteered so far and mods have been swamped just dealing with posts. We'll see if we can get on this.
  4. You can run away, actually. If you run far enough, combat mode ends. But if you're in a small space that would be difficult. In BG/BG2 enemies actually often didn't follow you, so it became super cheesy, but I agree it would be nice to be able to invest in a talent, say, that aids escaping, and allow escaping across maps. (My guess is that POE can't handle enemies moving across maps at the moment.)
  5. Excellent art and music, OK to great writing, very decent combat system with lots of potential not yet realised, relatively unbuggy, and finally a game with its heart in its right old-school place for the most part. All that adds up to a pretty great experience, though I think the really good game will come with the sequel.
  6. Last buggy Obsidian game: 2010. Last two Obsidian games before POE: universally praised as bug-free. POE compared to other CRPGs: pretty damn polished. It has no massive 'gamebreaking' bugs, that is, bugs that stop you doing the main quest or cause hard crashes in non-localised areas. People are complaining because they have an annoying bug right now, which is totally legit. Those bugs suck and should be squished ASAP. But there's little basis in the facts to say "buggy Obsidian, another buggy game". POE is rightfully recognised in reviews as very polished and not particularly buggy. Remember Fallout 3 with its giant exclamation marks floating on the ground and Fallout 3 / FNV scripting errors blocking the main quest? Or Morrowind with its "hey I"ll just crash anywhere, anytime, just for you"? Or Gothic 3? Bioware's been really good about getting rid of gamebreaking bugs, but every time a BIo game releases there are people who complain "omg how did this game ever get released". Cos, you know, every game has bugs, and if you're unlucky to be hit with one, you tend to imagine the whole Q&A department went to sleep or something. "Nowadays games are so bugged"? Sorry, games have been bugged since 1978. It sucks, but it's an objective reality about how complicated games are to make and how many different PCs exist.
  7. Good stuff, hope it goes on to sell a lot more. Some backers have already paid $20 for the expansion pack.
  8. I'm a bit confused by this thread. When I did the first quest for the knights, the guy said, "here's a second quest but HEY IF YOU ACCEPT YOU'RE LOCKED IN WITH US." So I held off, then I did a quest for the dozens, and they also said, "do the next one and YOU'RE WITH US." I mean, it's as clear as it is in BG2, or wherever else. Or are you guys saying you seem to get locked in when you accept quest 2, and not complete it? That's a more reasonable complaint. I didn't even accept those quests because I thought the dialogue was pretty clear that accepting locks you in, but it's good that Obsidian will address this in the patch.
  9. You didn't understand his answer. Durance's quarterstaff, like other similar weapons, has a long reach (read the item description), which lets him stand, say, just behind Eder and still hit enemies without being as exposed. I've been using several spells to decent effect. There's a second level seal spell that has a chance of knocking all enemies in that area down prone, which can sometimes bail out Eder or whoever else getting hit a lot. There's also the third level spell that damages one and knocks down nearby enemies; the fourth level 'burn people' spell that does a fair amount of damage. But direct damage spells aren't necessarily the most efficient way to use Durance. I've used Durance mostly as a buffer and healer in the tougher fights, since he has so many different buffs and debuffs spread out over different spell levels, but I've also decked him out with a unique mace and shield and he does a decent amount of damage as well. I haven't yet got him to particularly excel in any one thing, but he does pull his weight.
  10. Mine arrived yesterday, US. Everybody's should be being sent out.
  11. Unless the game is a pirated copy (not saying yours is), you should not have any worries about it. Put the file on your whitelist and continue playing.
  12. You... can click them again as soon as they disappear, though?

  14. I think mostly one-time use but there are occasions where it's not. Bug or intended, I'm not sure. I too think they should be rarer and more expensive.
  15. I agree it's nice to hear more from them directly. I suppose all they can say now is "we're working on it".
  16. We mods aren't Obsidian employees, so we usually don't have inside info as to what they're doing. But as mentioned earlier in this thread, the devs do know this issue and are working on it. I suppose there is a certain irony that we now have to moderate a thread about bugs on a moderating horn of our invention...
  17. You shouldn't check every other hour for anything. It's not really good for your happiness. I think the unofficial/tentative word was they were aiming for sometime this working week, but patch releases are always unpredictable, because when you fix one thing it can break other things and you need to test that. Hopefully soon.
  18. Obsidian themselves couldn't provide such an option, in good faith to the backers. Mods will take care of this soon, I'm sure.
  19. They announced that a patch would be incoming this week on Thursday/Friday, how is that inconsiderate? All software has bugs on release, there's no perfect version 1.0. But far from all games have huge bugs making the game unplayable. Fact that this **** go through to the full release makes me question the sanity of the devs and thursday/friday? A whole damn week to fix bugs that make the game absolutely unplayable? They should work around the clock to get that **** sorted out, not relax and do it in a week I guess you know exactly how long it takes to fix that bug, right, and it's four and a half hours at a leisurely pace?
  20. Oh, cool. I tried it before, but maybe I was doing it wrong. THanks!
  21. Every PC game in the world comes with bugs. Many come with real gamebreaking bugs, like CTDs, main questlines being broken, etc. Thankfully that is not the case with POE. Still, it will be important for patches to address existing issues - including annoying ones like Raedric's Hold. But, you know, the game came out on Thursday. It is now Monday. It hasn't been long. They were working on bugs in the weekend. They haven't put up a big announcement because nothing is ready yet. Bugfixes take time. You can't just look in the code, fix one bug, and then put up a 'micro fix'. The reason for that is, when you change one thing in the code, you risk creating new bugs. Each fix needs to be tested - nobody wants to play a game where different things keep breaking and they keep downloading new fixes to the old fixes. I think they want a patch to come relatively soon, though.
