redneckdevil Posted September 24, 2016 Posted September 24, 2016 One game that had a surprisingly nice crafting system was Dragon Age: Inquisition. Everything I picked from the ground eventually came to some use and that made the material gathering meaningful, To bad the story and the characters were garbage. Except the loot drops were horrible in comparison. Find a legendary purple weapon but its useless compared to a crafted weapon made of simple iron. I liked crafting in the Witcher games, but that's because it made sense with alchemy and the role it plays in both gameplay and in the fiction, but many games that are adding/have added crafting systems in recent years didn't need one and don't benefit from it. Skyrim for example. Why roam and explore if u can craft and make weapons that pale to what the daedric princes would give? I will second that the witcher 3 had a good crafting system and made sense.
Gorgon Posted September 24, 2016 Posted September 24, 2016 I dislike level dependent loot generalted by random tables in general. If loot has level restrictions I don't want more than three tiers or thereabouts. A good sign is if you can find an item early on that you like and wind up using for most of the game. Really developers should place most loot and only randomly generate the inconsequential stuff. So often loot drops make you feel like one of the sad old ladies playing the one armed bandits at the casino. They win just often enough to keep them playing, but the sensation is never enough to keep them away for very long. A lot of science went into feeding them just the right gameplay loop to condition their dopamine receptors to listen for the reward sound, that *ping* of a purple or gold drop, insert three oranges or whatever pays out on a slot machine. Even if you win big, you are still conditioned to keep going, that's how the house wins every time. In an MMO they make your purple drop level dependent and switly lose its value as you earn more XP. This was mostly my experience of Skyrim and Witcher 3 as well, but at least in those games you could get better gear by crafting or hunting down wicher gear and more or less escape from the grind. Na na na na na na ... greg358 from Darksouls 3 PVP is a CHEATER. That is all.
TMZuk Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 (edited) I agree with those who dislike crafting in RPGs. I play an adventurer. Not a craftsman. Making a good blade takes weeks in real life, yet in most games you 'craft' one, using silly 'ingredients' in a few minutes. The stupid crafting system in PoE killed so much joy for me. Kill it with fire! Level scaling is another deplorable feature. Awful mechanic that makes character progression pointless. And finally voiceacting. Listening to the same twenty actors pretending to be hundreds or even thosands of people is cringeworthy. Even more so when twenty people attempt to sound like they are a crowd of thousands. Yuck! Lexx Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 Loved the crafting system in Arcanum. :> "only when you no-life you can exist forever, because what does not live cannot die."
Drowsy Emperor Posted September 25, 2016 Posted September 25, 2016 (edited) I hate all the number related nonsense in RPG's. Its a remnant of wargaming and PnP where you needed some way to structure and immerse into a game as opposed to just having adults playing with toy soldiers or cops and robbers. There is no reason to have any of that anymore except in a most bare bones fashion. Randomly generated loot, crafting, sophisticated leveling and builds - extensive upgrading - its all just pavlovian nonsense that has no real impact on creating an immersive experience. Labadal Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 I'm thinking of buying Hyper Light Drifter now that they are going to patch in 60 FPS., boss rush and easy mode for PC.
Sannom Posted September 27, 2016 Posted September 27, 2016 (edited) Welp, I don't know how many years it's been, but it's back, another tease for l'arlésienne as we say in French, good old Beyond Good and Evil 2 : https://www.instagram.com/p/BK2aRqvAC2S/ Maybe a last hurrah from the Guillemot brothers before Ubisoft get bought out by Vincent Bolloré and they get kicked out? Lexx Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Wasteland 3 "kickstarter" (on Fig) just got announced. Labadal Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 I'm not surprised something like that would be next. I just thought that it would be an Obsidian game. 1

That would be lolworthy alright. I'd expect much of the 'dex to pledge regardless... In eggs isle going full popamole is hardly surprising, at this point. Fenixp Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 I quite liked Wasteland 2. Not the best RPG ever, sure, but it was a lot of fun regardless. I also liked XCOM. I am not hardcore enough again or something?

Drowsy Emperor Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 What is this now, the tenth Fallout game when you include tactics and that old console action trash И погибе Српски кнез Лазаре,И његова сва изгибе војска, Седамдесет и седам иљада;Све је свето и честито билоИ миломе Богу приступачно.
Hurlshort Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 Wasteland 2 was excellent. The complaints seem to be more about how InXile handles their PR then the actual game. What is this now, the tenth Fallout game when you include tactics and that old console action trash What other games are you talking about?

Keyrock Posted September 28, 2016 Posted September 28, 2016 I quite enjoyed Wasteland 2 and am looking forward to playing W3. That said, I'm done with crowdfunding, so Fargo & Co ain't getting no money in advance from me. 3 RFK Jr 2024 "Any organization created out of fear must create fear to survive." - Bill Hicks

Wasteland 2 is the only new game that is doing that. Wasteland 2 is a pretty different setting too. It shares the post-apoc stuff, sure, but it doesn't have any of the 50's retro setting, it's fairly grounded in reality when it comes to weapons, etc.
