RANDOM VIDEO GAME NEWS

Most intriguing was the inclusion of the Mako. While those segments in Mass Effect 1 weren't great (or even _good_, for that matter), the wholesale write-off of that mechanic seemed like overkill to me (as Yahtzee put it, it at least gave the game world a feeling of _bigness_). And its replacement with the "Oh-god-how-did-this-make-it-through-QA?" planet scanning made the decision even more egregious.

“Political philosophers have often pointed out that in wartime, the citizen, the male citizen at least, loses one of his most basic rights, his right to life; and this has been true ever since the French Revolution and the invention of conscription, now an almost universally accepted principle. But these same philosophers have rarely noted that the citizen in question simultaneously loses another right, one just as basic and perhaps even more vital for his conception of himself as a civilized human being: the right not to kill.”

"The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly correct. He was obsolete. But so is the State, the entity he worshipped. Any state, entity, or ideology becomes obsolete when it stockpiles the wrong weapons: when it captures territories, but not minds; when it enslaves millions, but convinces nobody. When it is naked, yet puts on armor and calls it faith, while in the Eyes of God it has no faith at all. Any state, any entity, any ideology that fails to recognize the worth, the dignity, the rights of Man...that state is obsolete."

I've never played Mass Effect, but I must say this game looks absolutely stunning.

However, I fear this:

[ ] Collect 20 Spaceroot

[ ] Herd 12 Space Cattle

[ ] Close 3 Space Rifts

Even if I did play for nearly 200 hours, lots of the content was just MMO repetition.

Bethesda's presentation was pretty good, certainly far more enjoyable than EA's for me (admittedly, if I was into Madden or FIFA I would likely have been a lot more hyped for EA, since they spend like 2/3 of their time on those games).  Prey looks really interesting, even if it seems like it's in no way connected to the original game bearing that name (I liked that game).  Dishonored 2, well it looks like more Dishonored in a new setting (works for me), plus it has time-travel.

Afaik Avellone is working on this prey game. So basically Avellone works for Bethesda now, or at least zenimax. Lel.

Arkane Studios have certainly mastered their crafts. This game looks enormously beautiful. *Glurrr!* (Me drowning in my own drool.)

I mean the attention to detail is right up their alleys (literally) and mine.

Hopefully it will have better development and final execution than the previous Call of Cthulhu, botched by Bethesda.

When I hear "We made our own engine", my first thoughts are no longer "Cool! Pretty!" but rather "Oh man, it'll be buggy and run like crap, won't it?" Still, I'm massively hyped for Dishonored 2.

Bethesda wasn't the developer, they did publish it but seemingly without giving it any resources. Still, IMO, it was a fantastic game and first got me interested in Lovecraft.

MCA is working on the new version of Prey. I wonder if this direction for the title started while both were under Obsidian.

The game was, IIRC, mostly complete before the developer got into financial trouble.  I think Bethesda basically put in enough money to make it publishable.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

I know, but as far as promoting it Bethesda seems to have done next to nothing. Most gaming web sites didn't even know that it was released. The reason the developer went out of business was the game wasn't financially successful, while they invested a lot of their own money into it.

PC Gaming Show life stream is running right now. Watching it since over half an hour and so far I have yet to see a game that would interest me. Either all games are the same boring crap or people are just bad at making good trailers. Not exactly sure about it.

The new Mount & Blade was the best looking one so far, imo.

Also, in approx 10 minutes some new stuff from ArmA3's Apex expansion should be shown. That's basically the only reason why I am forcing myself through this.

Arkane was doing a System Shock 3 (official) for EA prior to John Riccitiello becoming boss there. nuPrey is that game with the SS3 specific stuff excised in a similar way that Dishonoured = Thief - IP and Arx Fatalis = Ultima Underworld - IP. The EA SS3 eventually did see the light of day as Dead Space, which is why nuPrey looks and sounds a lot like Dead Space as well as System Shock.

After the crap Bethesda pulled with Human Head I will never be enthusiastic about a Prey game while they're involved, even if it's theoretically right up my street. I'd far prefer Avellone to be working on the Otherside SS3 rather than a knock off.
