"Serious" story cRPG's were never my biggest obsession, especially in the early days. I did find it interesting that they put Kotor2 over Kotor1. If I didn't include freeware titles like Daggerfall and Betrayal at Krondor I wouldn't own 6- FONV (have played it on console though), Dark Souls, Knight of the Chalice, QfG Shadows of Darkness, Geneforge, Pools of Darkness. For the majority I can say that I bought them because they were on sale with no intention of ever playing them. So restricting myself to those for which I own boxed copies, *and* were purchases when still relevant (as opposed to collecting for historical purposes), I've got 29 of the games, I've 'meaningfully' (by which I mean more than just messing about for an hour or so) played 18, and finished 7. But yeah, if I count stuff on GOG, in random compilations or random CDs I've bought second hand for the hell of it, I can say I have access to 47 of the 50 - exclusions being Dark Souls, Knights of the Chalice (only one I've never heard of), and Geneforge. Wow that's interesting list but I see a major flaw that I think RPGCodex needs to rectify. I don't see BG2 : Throne of Bhaal on the list, this doesn't make sense that its not in the top 70 RPG list. Obviously someone missed the votes on this one EDIT: Unless it considered part of BG2 : Shadows of Amn? Black Gate and Serpent Isle are both there, but not quite the same thing. I presume Throne of Bhaal isn't there because either it was rolled into SoA in people's minds (it's been impossible to buy them separately for ages, after all, and all digital versions include the Xpac) or simply because it isn't considered particularly good. Labyrinth of Worlds was an amazing experience, so much content throughout the worlds linked by the crystal. I'll always remember the story of Praecor Loth. I omit strict numbers because the order in itself is already pretty fluid, they're only vaguely ranked. The Black Gate + Serpent Isle - I'm cheating to give myself more room in this list. Fallout 2 - Controversy! But I played it first and regardless of story it just plays better, The Sims 2 - If JA2 belongs on a list of RPGs, so does this game. Fallout New Vegas - Tolerated mechanically to get to the wonderful game beneath. Fallout - With a caveat in that I've never finished it. Got probably 90%+ through but the end fights were too tough for my underlevelled character Baldur's Gate 2 - A bit of an odd one, I enjoyed my time with it, but the mechanics are such that I'll probably never have the urge to replay it for the rest of my life. Which is something unique to this list. The Witcher 2 - see Fallout New Vegas VtM:Bloodlines - Docked two-thirds of its points because it's two thirds of a game. Would probably be top three otherwise. Jagged Alliance 2 - Frankly I think it's less of an RPG than many other games omitted from the list, but let's roll with it. In terms of it as a game alone, yeah, I can go with it in this position. The "what is this game doing in any best-of list?" special award: Ultima 8 - Yep, I played this before U7. And as poorly received as it was, it has a special place in my gaming history. Ironically, being panned as a game with far too much focus on unwieldy combat and losing the charm of its predecessors, it's perhaps the game that showed me how much fun a game could be without those elements. I could spend hours just messing around in the game's only city, talking to people and messing with their stuff. Also Crusader would not have existed without this game. I suppose it's sort of an RPG: Sid Meier's Pirates! (I think the Gold remake was the one I mainly played) Notable omissions: Planescape: Torment - "What the hell?" some of you might ask me? I kind of screwed this game up for myself by playing a a third of it or so years and years ago, and struggle to come back because I really don't want to play that segment again. Baldur's Gate - Another case of playing the sequel first, but this time it resulted in the first game experience being flat out terrible. Just could not even begin to get into it. At all. Mask of the Betrayer - I tried to play as a rogue and got my face smashed in. If only it weren't a DnD game.... Darklands - Played long after its release after acquiring a near-new copy on eBay. 0/10 for combat, 10/10 otherwise, made for a game just tiresome to play. KoTOR (either of them) - Competent games set in a setting I abhor. Spoilered just to reduce clutter and for plausible deniability for taking the thread off-topic. marelooke Posted February 7, 2014 Share Posted February 7, 2014 (edited) I am, of course, referring to War of the Overworld which aims to replicate the Dungeon Keeper (mostly 1, with the non-sucky bits of 2 added) gameplay. They lost the rights to the Dungeon Keeper franchise due to that pathetic excuse of a game above or this would have been Dungeon Keeper 3. What? They never had the rights in the first place. It was a fan-made sequel until they decided to become legit developers and had to drop the franchise. It has nothing to do with Dungeon Keeper Mobile - this development happened before Dungeon Keeper Mobile was even announced. Anyway, as an early access backer I'm still on the fence on War for the Overworld. All it's done successfully so far is make me want to play the older Dungeon Keeper games instead. It looks the part, but it so far doesn't have any of the charm - they are playing it far too straight. Hmm, I must've been misinformed then, I read they were fine using the name until that Mobile thing came around. My apologies. That said I'm curious how it will turn out, can hardly be worse than that F2P thing. I probably still know all Dungeon Keeper levels by heart, so even if the urge to play is there it'd probably be a short stint. Maybe I should get my hands on the Deeper Dungeons, though I remember mostly frustration with that. I did find it interesting that they put Kotor2 over Kotor1. I always had the impression the latter was more popular. KotOR2 is certainly better in pretty much every way (which doesn't mean that KotOR isn't a good game, of course). The main problem with KotOR2 is that it was released unfinished and stayed that way until fans fixed it. Something I'm still bitter about (sue me). Guest Slinky Posted February 7, 2014 Share Posted February 7, 2014 While KotOR2's take on star wars was about billion times more interesting than the usual fairy tale SW tends to be, I always thought the planets and other places were really boring in KotOR 2. As such I never really got into it. Too bad the engine is so cluncky in both games, otherwise I think I would go check has my opinion of them changed over the years.
