I would rather a saber toothed tiger or something different

Is there any word on druid animal companions? That might make this discussion kind of redundant.

I still want a cow companion. Or the potted plant on wheels. Failing that, a tapir.

The only dog that will fit intuthe lure and game mechanics (i will not be food for first dragon) it's hell hound

Didn't Obsidian already announced capability to include elves, dwarves and other lesser species in your group? What else do you want?

*seriously* A dog would be nice.

Is nomine vacans liberarit vobis ex servitut.

Is nomine vacans redit vobis ars magica.

I have to say, contrary to a lot of people here, I much prefer non-magical animal companions in contrast to magical ones. This doesn't include sentient animals, but more ones that are pets etc.

The reason is that I find having magical animals as pets quite garish - they're too obviously trying to be "cool". This isn't to say they should be real animals necessarily, but certainly not hell-hounds or miniature dragons, but if you wanted, say, a fictional bear species or even something like a sabre-tooth tiger that'd work. If heroes with animal companions were real, having a tiny dragon companion would be the equivalent of walking into a room covered in excessive "bling". Generally just faintly embarrassing. Plus then the coolest thing about you would be your pet, not your heroing prowess.

I'm all for dogs, big cats, wolves, giant versions of smaller animals, hawks, owls etc, but just not silly things.

The Dog Who

Up to that point I thought you were making Doctor Who puns :)

Unobtrusively informing you about my new ebook (which you should feel free to read and shower with praise).

I don't mind having the option of an animal companion - regardless of whether it is a mangy dog or an invisible pink unicorn - but if the animal takes up one of the regular companion slots, I'll probably not want to use it,

The ideal option for me would be some unusual, intelligent/interactive companion - even something like Morte from PS:T or maybe even a magical/sentient weapon.

I dont want any animal companians at all.

Do I dog companion? No. Do I want a dog companion? No. Dogs can't cast spells or wear +2 steel plate. Don't see much use.

It's a free companion though...

Have fun with your Pariah Dog in Fallout 2, I'll be busy over here being effective.

I voted yes and no, lololololololololol!!!!

The Traitor Dog: because canine loyalty is so passe.

chuckled.

And there is a dog companion. Name's Forton. You get a leash for free if you to take him off his owner's hands.

That's one of the ugliest (and not in the good monstrous way) pics of a hell hound I ever saw. DO NOT WANT.

DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.

A dog companion? No thanks....

A dog familiar or ranger pet? Yes please!

But the pets should be very limited in ability. IE: All they do is attack and follow you.

I'm just saying...

"It has just been discovered that research causes cancer in rats."

A dog companion might make some sense, but methinks the Druid and/or Ranger classes should satisfy your desire for an animal companion via their ability to call one. Wizards could, of course, have familiars. I'd like to see that the FACs have well developed personalities, even at the expense of having a more limited number of them from which to choose.

Dogs, cats, birds, and other animals are better off as pets or Ranger/Druid "summoned" animal companions

Why not something just for flavour? Like Minsc's squeaky companion.

I don't mind a vampire butterfly the size of your dinner plate the feeds on nectar. Level up enough with you, you learn to create some form of poison from its wing flakes.

No dog.. but something you don't see in any rpg.. something like an owl or a myconid-like creature :) ..

"O, the life of the Druid is the life of the land.

We are one with the dark earth on which we proudly stand.

One with the Mother who has suckled us from birth,

Her streams and her rivers, we are one with the earth;

One with the Father, whose oak supports the sky,

Who gazes on us daily with his great, immortal Eye..."

so long as I can make some armadillo helmets I will be happy.
