Somewhat my feelings during ME1.

I don't mind sex scenes, as long as they are not cringeworthy, proceeded by cringeworthy dialogue. So far, no such luck with BioWare...

You can always skip romances. I usually do that because they are never well written in games.

The problem is BIO puts a lot of emphasis on romance in their games. It's very hard to avoid.

 

they ain't that hard to avoid. however, am gonna concede that the temptation to try bio romances can be strong. how much of the game content is tied up with the romances? given that we has enjoyed game X so far, can one simply throw away +10% of the game content? will this game finally get it right? etc. many such questions arise. nevertheless, for the past few games Gromnir has managed to ignore the romances, 'cause we hasn't seen any marked improvement. bio keeps trying to refine their current romance scheme, and so we do not see any chance o' meaningful improvement. the great irony is that the thing that keeps bio romances from being anything more than crude and rushed side-quests also makes 'em avoidable. the romances is optional and tangential. this is their unavoidable flaw. this is their one saving grace.

 

btw, while we thinks that this move by bioware is a bit o' unexpected lasciviousness that we feel demeans all parties involved, we cannot help but feel that the debate surrounding this latest biowarian innovation (HA!) will create a great deal o' unnecessary noise. a few moments o' poorly animated oral sex? *groan* is a carnival sideshow kinda curiosity at best, and ultimately it will fail to achieve... anything. crpgs is indeed a kinda actualized wish fulfillment, but is idealized wish fulfillment. coarse and vulgar is our firstest impression, and am not seeing how bio could implement so as to achieve the kinda idealized wish fulfillment their fans is looking to achieve.

Reminds me of my last ME2 run. I'd decided not to do romances anymore. Then Tali starts being awkward and talking about us. Whoah, whoah, I was just being nice!

I'm on the fence, and I'm not swayed. Sex interactions with NPCs are good for a laugh if done right.

 

You know how the porn industry has been accused of influencing how people interact with each other sexually, their expectations etc. young people with limited experience in particular.

 

I wonder if in 20 years a budding romance might start with a heart felt present of 20 ingots of meteorite ore and 50 dead rats.

A friend and I were having a discussion about sexual content in CRPGs just the other day. I expressed disappointment in how games very rarely fail to live down to the worst of their stereotype as entertainment primarily for 13-year-olds.

 

His response was that if you're going to make a game primarily to enable people to indulge a particular variety of puerile wish fulfillment (i.e., taking on the role of the noble-hero-or-badass-antihero around whom all the major events in the world revolve), throwing in idealized sexual content as an additonal flavor of said puerile wish fulfillment doesn't change much.

 

His is probably a healthier attitude, in that I'm a snob who likes to pretend that my enjoyment of these games is much more sophisticated than all that, and in that there is no real reason why I should consider the sexual element of the content as any more embarrassing than all the violence, escapism, solipsism, etc., is. And there is some truth to that.

 

But, still, I find it a lot easier to extract 'sophisticated' pleasures from well-executed RPG combat, rules systems, and character interaction than I do from what sexual content I have seen in games. Which, I think, means either that I'm hung up on sex (possible), or that the way games have implemented sexual content is consistently less well thought-out, less polished, and less engaging than the implementation of other game elements (almost certainly the case).

 

 

I think games nowadays are not games so much as they are "experiences". Computer games used to commonly have rules, systems, mechanics, failure was always a possibility. A lot of current game development has been to minimize the presentation of those aspects, especially failure, which I think has lead a much more narcicisstic aspect to current games.

 

Some genres still maintain more of a focus on tradtional gameplay, but they are definitely the less commerically vaible of the IPs.

 

So I think you're friend is right: games today are not really much lessened by the inclusion of highly narcicisstic and idealized sexual content. A lot of them are all ready there in all other areas.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

I would had killed to have this information this morning, it would had helped to wipe the smugness of one friends today about DA2 being superior. If anything it would be a surefire way to bring the subject of fellatio in a conversation with her :)

Playing Awakening again, I'm now surprised that Bioware has kept a complete lid on any information that awakened Darkspawn or Disciples appear in DA2. Especially no mention of a Disciple companion. Seems up their alley. Also wish fulfillment.

How about encounter design which isn't absolutely horrible, to start?

No more bands of mooks spawning every three feet would help. They're boring, they're not tactical, and they're too much. The Deep Roads felt incredibly tedious and it looks like they will be just as tedious in Dragon Age II. Also HAWKE PUNCH, huh? It's really Dragon Effect. :) At least the skill trees look better, and the graphics didn't look that bad in that video. It feels like an 80s fantasy cartoon, but whatever.

2. Enemies spawn all around you.

3. Die

4. Reload, position correctly for coming fight, win.

5. Repeat in next room.

That's simply untrue. I can think of entire dungeons that didn't do that once. Such as the Maleficar hideout in Denerim. I think Haven Temple only did that for the drake ambushes.

 

Or the battles at the end for Denerim, which never did it. It just had them wait around corners or a few hiding Rogues near the end.

It was a very annoying mechanic that popped up again and again and again and serves as a great example of just how horrid the encounter design was.
