Ukraine Conflict - Es ist nichts schrecklicher als eine tätige Unwissenheit

The Mariupol situation from yesterday according to ISW.

Mariupol%20Battle%20Map%20Draft%20April%

They captured only southern part of the southern port.

Also there was almost no info from what is going on there in the last few days, but during weekend, there died a lot of Russians again. Shared on videos as well. No one knows the situation of Ukrainian army though, as it is very well guarded secret.

If Russia would make any significant gains, we would see a ****loads of cheap propaganda from their side... Which is not happening. If you do not count the Kadyrov's TikTok Battalion of course 🤷‍♂️

Wow that's low. They bombed a guy who was in an outdoor ****ter. Used a precision missile even. Wonder who was the target.

That's the updated one from today. There are definitely some PR videos/ interviews from Russian media in the southern yellow part too, though I'm not sure exactly what ISW are using for their criteria for geolocation/ verification/ definition of control.

I'm Spanish. Used to be a lot of carryover crap from back when the military establishment was the main source of the regime's political power in the country, and it took a long while to really modernize and grow out of it. We've come a long way in the last ~25 years and the worst is now in the past, but it's not completely fixed. Senior officers are still mostly untouchable.

Right. I didn't want to make any guesses, but I had a hunch it might be a country with some dodgy dictator-related history. I would assume that Chile and Argentina, for instance, also have had similar problems with and in their armed forces. Institutions are sometimes particularly slow to change, especially the more power they have or have had.

Very interesting (if sad) to hear that, too, so thanks.

well that happens when you get ambushed by your neighbor. I would not worry that much about Ukraine economy now. I am sure EU will pump money into it after war (well depends on how it ends)

I'm the enemy, 'cause I like to think, I like to read. I'm into freedom of speech, and freedom of choice. I'm the kinda guy that likes to sit in a greasy spoon and wonder, "Gee, should I have the T-bone steak or the jumbo rack of barbecue ribs with the side-order of gravy fries?" I want high cholesterol! I wanna eat bacon, and butter, and buckets of cheese, okay?! I wanna smoke a Cuban cigar the size of Cincinnati in the non-smoking section! I wanna run naked through the street, with green Jell-O all over my body, reading Playboy magazine. Why? Because I suddenly may feel the need to, okay, pal? I've SEEN the future. Do you know what it is? It's a 47-year-old virgin sitting around in his beige pajamas, drinking a banana-broccoli shake, singing "I'm an Oscar Meyer Wiene"

Even if they were to win, I think you will be surprised with how little actual help they will get from the west.

My guess is they will get more than Puerto Rico. >_<

If the economy continues down the path it's going, they won't get even that.

I still remember the beginning of the pandemic when the EU was gripped with panic and almost all the countries banned the export of ventilators, masks and medications that were assumed to help at the time, some where even hijacking delivers that were going thorough their territory. That killed any remaining illusions that I had regarding the EU.

Yeah, I've seen that. It was published like hour or two after mine post :) And yes, the situation changed little bit compared to the time of my post. The PR are not very pompous yet, so not yet all bells and whistles for Russia conquering that town IMHO...

Anyway, there was one very interesting event happening today. Someone posted on one of the Mariupol units a post about them running out of ammunition, and they preparing for their last battle. Some experts claim it was authentic, some experts claim it was possible hack and me, being anything but the expert on this, there might be one more possibility - some "false flag" post in the hope that the Russians and Kadyrovs will make something extraordinary stupid again. Here is the take on that FB post by BBC:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-61068650

I really wish it is the first or last case, but we'll probably see the correct answer sooner or later.

EDIT: Also the mouthpiece of Russian propaganda RIA Novosti is already spreading the word, how a chemical attack in Mariupol is urgently needed...

https://t.me/rian_ru/158246

Google translate:

Basurin said that it makes no sense to storm the underground fortifications of Azovstal in Mariupol, you need to "turn to the chemical troops"

"There are underground floors, so it makes no sense to take this object by storm. Because you can put a large number of your soldiers, and the enemy will not suffer losses as such"

“Therefore, at the moment it is necessary to deal with the blocking of this plant, find all the exits and entrances - in principle, this can be done."

Well someone posted few days ago snippet from an article speaking about big gas supplies in Black Sea close to Crimea, so in the end, this might help a lot with rebuilding Ukraine, if EU cut's all gas from Russia and get it from Ukraine. All the EU will need to do, is to help build the extractors and pipes... Of course only if that report is true in the first place... :shrugz:

Ukraine's economy to halve
Lost roughly 20 years of development.

And Russia reportedly will contract 11.2% this year. I bet China is already calculating, how to turn them into their full-fledged vassals... And there are first hints that India is, after the events in Bucha and surrounding towns and villages, starting to reconsider their stance on the situation, which might punish the Russian economy even more. We'll see ho they will act in the coming days/weeks.

Well. I am sorry to upset anyone, but lately being not very active here, I am trying to answer all the questions/posts as soon, as I found any interesting ones. And sometimes these questions are spanned over few pages. (Yes, you are correct, not the case this time). Also for some reason when I tried to use multiquote few times in the past, it failed on me few times before. So I am more clumsy than lazy, while trying to answer multiple of people at once :shrugz:

I'm not upset, but it does spam the thread. Don't take this the wrong way, but not everyone is interested in each posters post (this is not directed at you, just in general).

Technically, in the forum guidelines there's a prohibition of "Posting frequent, annoying, and/or nonsensical posts", but I think that primarily aimed at stopping spamming in general rather than trying to enforce it against general discussions.  I'd think the ideal would be, as much as possible, to use the multiquote function, though.

Different strokes for different folks. I personally don't like seeing the whole page filled with a singles posters posts, like sonic spamming the random gaming news thread with every piece of news he found. The forum posting functions are objectively bad, but I still make an effort to reduce the clutter.

Also I don't have anything against @Mamoulian War and I'm not shy about calling people out when they annoy me.

I use the multiquote function as much as I can, but replying to a specific part of a multiquote post is a bother because of the tendency of quote boxes to go *poof* or otherwise disrupt format. And nesting quote boxes is an ability some consider to be unnatural...
