  1. This is hyperbole. Let your party member get knocked down and the favour of the battle turns to your enemies. You may afford to lose one member, if the battle is on the track you set, but can you afford to lose more ? I suspect we talk about tough encounters and not trash battles. But enough about PoE's 'bad design choices'. Engagement is brilliant and makes you think twice and do certain actions if you want to disengage to reach a dangerous enemy in the back lines before is too late. Endurance-health is great. The thing is that some of you people who also had access to the BB, never accepted the state of combat as it was and tried to convince others that it should be more like the old IE games, which was much simpler and prone to exploits. We heard your opinion over and over. Get over it, especially since the game is undoubtably the success that it is.
  2. The story flourishes later on if you can bring yourself to carry on. As for combat, I really don't understand many of such comments I've been reading for some time now. There is quite a different approach if you're battling a mixed mob of brutes-spellcasters and when just melee opponents. But the worst as I see it, is how people compare the 'boring' PoE combat to that of BG1-2. If one of those games had same combat tactics over and over, tha would definitely be BG(1 and 2). If you had casters, you had to play rock-paper-scissors to break their defenses, or have a berserker rush them, or have the Paladin kit's strong dispel turn them to puppies. Also, you people should admit that for the most battles you used the same favourite spells, not to mention how simple the melee classes were.
  3. D&D 5th is (imo) the best pen'n'paper D&D we've had so far, but I will have to disagree with you, I think it can be translated very well in a crpg. The combat mechanics are simple and solid enough. Class options and feats that are of a role-play nature can be omitted and should that break balance, they can give another ability instead.
  4. Your realization is true, however I think the solution is simple: -Casual Player plays game on easy setting -Hardcore Player plays on hard Also, many hardcore players looking for a challenge intentionally 'hamper' themselves to up the challenge by not exploiting game systems (eg not rest spam in the Baldur's Gate and similar games) As for PoE, my personal exp to get a nice challenge: -play on hard -use Obsidian Companions -don't use consumables/scrolls/traps in battle, as to play with the same terms as my enemies -advance main story without searching every nook and cranny or doing all side-quests. Leave content either to return in a later part of the game or for another playthrough if I lose interest -try to win hard encounters/quests that except me to lv up and return to them at a lower lv
  5. The developers of the enhanced editions of BG1&2 and IWD are working to get the license to create a third instalment in the BG games. Not good news as I see it. Although I am grateful to them for the enh. ed., any new content they added was almost trash and did not fit well at all with the original. So I question how good that new BG will be.
  6. Well said, all of it. What I want to believe is that when gamers talk about balance in a single player game is b/c it hurts to see their fav classes/races fall short in front of others.
  7. Well, for starters you must like reading books. When the wall of text turns up, I almost forget I'm playing a video game and delve into the world of Pillars in a different, more imaginative way. As for voice acting, there are many occasions where what I hear diminishes the experience, since I picture a different voice in my head based on the descriptive text. And I always read the text in-between character lines when those are voice acted, which makes it annoying. In general, to appreciate all that text, you must enjoy using your imagination as a form of receiving the game experience.
  8. Oh really? Let's look at this again, shall we. I'd say that the above comments in red are overly dramatic, wiith the comment about a blind, lobotomized monkey being ridiculously so. Regarding point #1, yes, I agree that it's lame that the bonuses aren't better compared to what you can get at some inns. Agree 100%. That said, earlier in the game, those meager bonuses aren't so bad when you may not want to spend any more than necessary to rest. Later on when you're rolling in money (mostly because you've completely upgraded the stronghold, or at least decided to not sink any more into it), 200cp for a room that gives you a number of +2 bonuses starts looking like chump change. And it does seem a little silly that once you've fully upgraded your stronghold that somehow an inn can provide better, more restful, more bonus worthy accomodations than your own home. But that still doesn't qualify as a "complete waste of time"!!! As for point #2, there are only 4 merchants in the stronghold, so there can hardly be anything vast about them in the first place. And while their inventories ae hardly inspiring, that doesn't qualify as "offering nothing of worth". "Exceptional" grade weapons are hardly worthless. Bland and uninteresting? Yeah, I'd agree with that. But worthless? Not at all. At least when you mentioned the hirelings in point #4 you said that they SEEM like a waste of time, which is a reasonably fair way of stating whether true or not. Also in point #5, I'm not sure that I'd say that "nobody interesting" shows up at the stronghold. I think that some of the characters that do visit might be very interesting, if, as you later suggest, you could actually talk to them. In short, you seem unable to criticize without resorting to excessive hyperbole, otherwise known as being a drama queen. If you toned down the hyperbole and stuck to the logic of your points, you'd make much more convincing arguments. Stop derailing the conversation Crucis, a thing you tend to do in many threads you participate.
  9. My protagonist is a 2H dps fighter. I maxed MIG, INT (have both at 19, human+ old valia background), left rest at 10. I stronly believe the Estoc is THE No1 dps choice b/c of DR bypass. Firstly, I chose to max MIG so I could have the highest possible per hit dmg. Talent selection also helps with that (two-handed weapon style, fighter specialization). DEX didn't seem as the better choice, but I believe the build can work with max DEX, or even with a distribution of points between MIG/DEX. But I am very satisfied with my choice, as my dps fighter is first in dmg dealt and kills total in the party (protagonist- Eder- Sagani- Aloth- Grieving Mother- Durance). Next to the bread and butter of the build: max INT. As the OP states, knock-down is not only a disable skill but also a dps one and my 19 INT increases the duration to 7.3secs ! To add to that, the 1 per encounter skill 'Disciplined Barrage' has a duration of 22secs, which is enough for the whole encounter. Disc Barr is very important to the dps fighter, as higher ACC is always higher dmg. Skill-Talent selection: Pretty much self-explanatory. Passive talents that increase per-hit dmg, Disciplined Barr and weapon focus for the ACC increase. Bonus Knock-down is also a must- another 7+secs of disabling a foe. Equipment: Estoc is maybe the best choice for dps. You may keep a seperate 2H weapon (Greatsword or Poleaxe) for situations where pierce dmg type is the bad choice- just remember that even then, Estoc's DR bypass may render it the better choice. As for armor, know that this build is squishy, but that does not necessisate you wear bulky armor. As long as you have a tank absorb aggro, you may as well walk in regular (or enchanted) clothing, thus attacking considerably faster. But if things get messy and enemies target you, it will be a short trip to your downfall. Actually, I dress mine in heavy armor and I don't have to worry so much about survivabity, but it's your preference on that. A bonus of the build is that with 19 MIG and INT you will have excellent Fortitude and Will defences, and your equipment selection can either focus on your weaknesses or strengthen your strong points even more, making you untouchable in thoses defenses. Hope that helps
  10. Yeah I didn't really enjoy it. Combat/encounters are boring, exploration and itemization sucks and I was really disappointed with the story/writing too ....? Like, really ? Your experience with the backer beta did not give you any idea of the kind of game to expect ? I play on hard, encounters are thrilling, companions are not awesome for NOT being perfect, the writing-atmosphere is mind-blowing, the story is great ! This game is a masterpiece, far better than the good old games (in which I have invested hundreds of hrs in a span of 10+ years) and people are complaining about blue circles and companion's stat. Everyone's got their opinion, and you guys are the minority.
  11. It's not insane at all. I can't play without the IEMod anymore either. I've already decided to not play until 1.04 and the IEMod update for it has both come out. The IEMod just has features that never should've been left out of the main game. The fact that it fixes the ridiculous movement recovery speed penalty is just gravy. I maintain that the decision to make Allies and Neutral characters have the same circle colours is the single dumbest decision in the game. A lot of things can be chalked up to constraints, other things can be explained by mechanics interacting in a way they simply didn't foresaw, and yet more issues can be considered questionable judgement or personal taste. But this one thing is just the dumbest **** ever and is indefensible. ..... Seriously people ? (and movement recovery penalty is very realistic and another good choice for me)
  12. I beg to differ. I gave you my reason. I like paladins from a role playing perspective. This is a role playing game and choosing to like a particular class from a role playing perspective is a completely valid choice. I also happen to like Rangers, and my first PC happens to be a Ranger. My decision to like Paladins (and Rangers) has nothing to do with game mechanics. I liked Paladins in BG1 and 2, and in IWD1 and 2. And I still like Paladins ... for reasons that have nothing to do with game mechanics. And IMO why I choose to like paladins is every bit as valid a reason for doing so as some game mechanics reason. I prefer games like this for the role playing. I'm not looking to create a party of min-maxed OP characters and have no intention of judging any class from that perspective. This is the class builds sub forum and the topic discusses a class balance issue. Sir, you are making a strong point, but RP reasons have nothing to offer to the discussion.
  13. Indeed, the boys and girls in OE did it The game is a masterpiece, an instant classic, and I am looking forward for the next release !
  14. -from where I stand, builds are viable -also, I never sneak b/f combat, don't find it necessary. I play on hard. -your opinion on spells shows lack of exp in spells per day system. And you're not even willing to give it a try. -true, combat requires frequent pauses (at least on hard) -true, the pace of combat is faster than similar D&D crpgs, but I wouldn't have it any other way, like wait for the 6 seconds to pass and rolls being made -Divinity Original Sin is such a horrible, cheesy game that it withheld me from appriciating the one thing it did right: combat. Still, I prefer PoE rtwp combat.
  15. Lol, ie mod has blue selection cycles, when they were blue at some part of the beta and were asked to change to green to look more ie.
  16. Don't worry ! we'll get there ! Oh, the excitement :D
  17. I was a Nintendo-PS1 fan. I started playing D&D 2nd revised at my teens. I was bought my 1st PC when I was 19 and my introduction to the genre was with Baldur's Gate. It blew my mind, this game. Playing it for the first time is one of my most enjoyable moments in my gaming 'carreer'.
  18. Are people who funded this game back in the day required to pre-order ? Or we will just get the game at release by using some pass-code ?
  19. @in reply to the OP Your feedback is worthwhile but I believe it strongly reflects your personal playstyle, thus you come out with such opinion about the various classes. I believe there are many more 'power-gaming' options. However, I always enjoy reading such info, even if I'm not a power-gamer
  20. No matter your opinion on 'Angry Joe', the fact that he is hyped about PoE and he introduces the game to his followers can only mean good things.
  21. Is it true that in build 435 they incorporated a 'combat idle animation' ? If that's true, it is help enough for me to turn off the markers above characters.
