  1. Souping up the old Storm Scout. Retiring the Shadow Warrior and recruiting the Sabertooth. Hardware upgrades is an exotic business. (From ABIT AW9D + Core 2 Duo E6600 + 4GB DDR2 to ASUS Sabertooth X58 + Core i7-960 + 12 GB DDR3) - ASUS Sabertooth X58, check. - Core i7-960, check. - Corsair something ram, Humm.. Erm.. INTEL Pentium E6700?.. ??.. Aaaargh!!! Bloody hell, the stock worker checked out a Pentium E6700 instead of my ram.. And of course they close at 5 P.M.. And tomorrow saturday it's from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.. TOO EARLY. I NEED TO GET DRESSED TOO FOR CHRISSAKES.. Unfairyness. Living in the countryside is.. actually surprisingly good considering the need for air for fuming over messed up deliveries, to feel that clean fresh air mixed into the blood, but.. gah. What a waste of breath. Tomorrow. Life is pain.
  2. There is HD and then there is Full HD. Apparently this laptop is only HD. Full HD means that the resolution is 1920x1080. Looking at ASUS' own page for the G73SW there seems to be three display models: 17.3" 16:9 HD+ (1600x900)/Full HD (1920x1080)/Full HD 3D(1920x1080 120Hz) LED backlight. I assume this laptop utilize HD+ and therefore have a max resolution of 1600x900, which follows the 16:9 format, but isn't Full HD. If the laptop were using Full HD I'd assume that the line would be "Full High-Definition widescreen LED-backlit". Lot's of assumptions there, I admit.
  3. The display type doesn't say Full HD, which is a label I'd assume Best Buy would explicitly put on in case it was. I guess the resolution is probably 1600x900.
  4. Maybe realtek got the worst homepage ever, but they don't really sell onboard soundcards to the public.. No public kits for adding, screwing, drilling, fusing, wiring or retrofitting a Realtek HD chip to any motherboard.. Check the homepage of the manufacturer of your motherboard to see if they got any updates for your board.
  5. Ugh.. It looks rather complicated to make it work on Win7. Probably much easier to just install WinXP, maybe set-up as a dual-boot option.. Not really helpful, but just striking out dual-cores as a culprit. Even though my system is not exactly recent only the OS makes it really really old and the game runs flaw.. erm.. -fully out of the box, patched-up. (OS: Windows XP) CPU: Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.0GHz Video: ATi HD Radeon 4850 Audio: Creative X-Fi The Configure option from the launcher has a few debugging options and the scan itself might point to some obvious hotspots. The Configure->Scan Hardware:Details complains that I do not meet the recommended requirements for the Video. Kinda makes sense as a ATi Radeon 4850 is obviously an inferior card to a ATi Radeon 9200.. (namingschemes, blargh) But apart from that there are no other highlights or graphics issues.. other than I can easily run it 8x AA. Only issue is that sometimes the move buttons (forward & backwards) doesn't respond for awhile after combat even though everything else works - until it crashes. Don't forget to patch it up: http://www.lucasarts.com/support/update/kotor2int.html
  6. And then you might want to try and upload the file again, because even fixing the link doesn't work as "Sorry, the file you requested is not available."
  7. I concur. I don't think it's the video card either and I've had similar annoying problems too.. like the keyboard and mouse going numb, which makes it pretty hard for the computer to wake up. The reason for your gfx odd behaviour is probably that it doesn't get the power it really needs after returning from sleep. I assume that you have updated your drivers recently. Better to just disable sleep functions from hardware/bios and software and have the screen go blank instead, when idling and shut down your pc completely when you leave it until you fix the bios.
  8. I guess a funky CD Drive could via DMA (Direct Memory Access) make some funky errors in the system memory. A few funky bits going the wrong way could lead to a lot of agonizing errors.
  9. I would suggest changing the game as it still going to suck with a better graphics cards. If only frames per second were the only point of interest, then ATi 4850 would be enough. Even the ATi 4770 or the ATi 5670 would be an upgrade compared to the 9600GT, but the ATi 5750 would at least make sense in a somewhat larger perspective.
  10. Couldn't remember if I ever posted in this thread, but.. wow, it was insanely annoying to see the page gets longer and longer as I scrolled down.. and every time I clicked on the next page, there was new even higher page number. I wish there had been an icon of some kind on the forum overview to let me know that I made a post here. Enough of me whining. I made a screenshot awhile back that sort of capture my feelings towards a certain game. Later I realized that I could just have changed a single letter in the xenglish.db file, from L to G to get the same effect.
  11. Well, that's why it's called surround sound. The sound moves around.. maybe you just need a chair that can turn around? Seriously, I've got a X-Fi too; the X-Fi XtremeGamer and I used to use it with a 5.1 speaker system, but one of the outputs on the card stopped working and now I run it as 4.1. I've had problems before with dubious build qualities of creative cards.. maybe it's not dubious, but just really, really, really sensitive. I guess it's possible that it could be a hardware problem. Is it an old game, that you've switched around a lot? Does wavering your hand in the air or stomping with your feet switch the sound around? I also know there is an Xpand option or something phasing. I can't remember what it's called, but it was pretty annoying. Maybe you need to force the card to revert to the default factory settings? I have no idea how the boot-up numeration works or if the card performs some form of self-initialization, that shuffles the ports around, but I guess it could be related too as I guess, the change that occurs happens at boot-up. It's not like you have experienced changes when the computer was running, is it?
  12. Hm.. Well.. It's been a long time since I've used and played around with VT, but I guess the hardware input mixer in the voice tab of VT should be able to do that if you select "What you hear" for the input line.
  13. Well.. I've got the 4850 (too) for over a year now and I'm currently waiting for Nvidia to pull their act together.. (and TSMC to start delivering in droves).. Not because I want to buy any of their craphics, but because I want to buy ATi cheaper. Not really an optimist, but I was still expecting the 5850 to go for or decline to about the same price as 4850 did, when it was released.. And it's still almost double that. The 5870 cost about as much as the 4870x2 used to.. I guess the next logical step in a row would be the 5770, but I promised myself a long time ago never to return to 128bit, besides 5770 is too much of a marginally win/loss in comparison and that's just pointless. I still doubt whether I can rely on my rock stable Enermax Noisetaker II 485W to deliver what the 5850 needs, I'm just kinda lost in different sheets of 5850 consumption.. in the worst case scenario I'll just have to idle my way through any of ATi's top models..
  14. Silent Storm RPG?? It has RPG-Elements like professions with skill-trees, levels and a perk every level, but it's even less of a RPG than Fallout:Tactics is and that isn't really a RPG. I thought it was a really yawnsome experience to play Silent Storm, so maybe I slept through the 'RPG' or there wasn't any. I definitely consider that a quality. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is really refreshing because of the russian accent and all the russian singing and chatting by the npc's in the game. More of that, PLEASE!!
  15. Maybe it's just bad luck or poor quality, but the last couple of DVD RW drives I've had didn't last very long.. All (cheap) Samsung DVD RW drives. I guess they just weren't build for as much playback as I used them for or Samsung just sucks. Still got an old single-layer DVD-R Memorex, which isn't that useful, but it works. So I just decided to buy an ASUS DVD-R instead of a RW drive and I haven't had any problems since. Of course it's 'nice' to have a writer, but I just realized that I really never used it. I think it's probably better to use a drive for it's primary purpose. A reader for playback and and a writer for burning discs.. Last longer. While it's true they are pretty cheap it's a lot of waste to buy cheap especially the day when they start to give up and cause no end of frustration.. Smashing the whole machine just isn't worth buying cheap.. Been there, done that, much regret.
  16. I have been thinking about getting a Q9550 too, but there are apparently two stepping versions: E0 and C1. Not sure about the number, but the letters are that. The E-version should be a better OC'er than the C-version, but getting that info about which stepping the CPU is from the vendor could be a problem. OC is pretty much, what has protected my aging E6600 from the flow of time. I've been looking at both the E8400 and the E5400, but the latter mostly out of curiosity, because the combination of a high multiplier and a low FSB rating means that there should be a lof of headroom for OC, but it seems as cursed as the Q9550, because there is only one of these Pentium Dual Cores of the E5000 series, which have the virtualisation needed for XP mode in Win7 and the rest dont. Or some such. While the price of the i5-750 and i7-860 are both lower than the Q9550 and even the i7-920 isn't that much more than the Q9550 the cost of change of socket and memory just adds more cost, than I'm really willing to pay for what seems like only a marginal increase of processing power to me.. But still is feels a teensy bit like wetting your pants on a cold day to keep warm for a short while, before the yellow ice makes it less desirable. Sometimes I forget that I'm not really in a race.. I try really hard not to be caught up in the consumer wake of ever changing technology, but the lure of new toys makes it really hard to think straight..
  17. I don't know that show, but I can recognise that girl from somewhere and from a quick glance at the wikipedia I see a lot of other actors from previous Josh Whedon shows.. But there is too much text for me to read it. So, are there any vampire slayers and vampires with a soul in that dollhouse?
  18. Well.. A library is for books and knowledge.. Here is one attempt at the word: "Library: From the Latin word, Liber
  19. So the tale continues.. 1. A quick death, versus a slow agonizing no-pc death. I know what I'd pick. 2. Yeah, well, maybe, but how can that be any worse, than what you've already got? 3. Be a sport!! Erm, oh well, no more games, calling tech-support in your case is probably the best.
  20. Oh, so you are saying, that you basically can't answer any of my other questions, because you've only been troubleshooting them in software with no fiddling around inside the pc-case with your gfx on your motherboard only with fewer words? Hm.. So maybe one or two of the gfx's has come loose from their sockets or the SLI cable has come off. Been moving around or kicking your case lately? Not really requiring any kind of special knowledge but you could try to open the case and 'push' the gfx cards 'gently' but 'firmly' into place.
  21. So.. have they ever worked? In case not, are you sure it's a SLI motherboard? Is the SLI what-ever option enabled on the motherboard or BIOS? Is the SLI what-ever cable firmly attached? Have you tried them both separately in single mode?
  22. I'm definitely looking forward to Bloodlines 2 by the reunited Troika somewhere in the not so likely future and Planescape: Torment 2, 3 and 4, as well as a hostile takeover of Bethsoft to reclaim the Fallout IP and restore the good name of Fallout with a true sequel to Fallout 2.. Oh, you mean games that has been announced.. well.. Short list: Bioshock 2. Hopefully a bit of light entertainment and action adventure with minimal of that role-playing and realism that has become so popular. I can easily do without realism, because I've got too much of that in my life already. Too bad NFS Shift'ed away from the arrow keys driving or that might have been worth a few hours relaxation.
  23. Yeah, well, while ATi doesn't have CUDA it does have ATi Stream and there is an interesting benchie: Video Transcoding over the GPU, even though I have no idea, what was used to test that.
  24. Spend the most of yesterday and today reading and sorting through reviews of psu's and cases. God I hate noisy hardware. It's just impossible to rely on a single review about anything and when you realize that whatever you've been looking at isn't even available in any shop in Denmark.. ffffff..
