  1. Yeah, in this forum there's an inverse relation between using MMO terms and getting level headed responses.
  2. Indeed, and my problem with 'horde' enemies is that it usually follows from a simplified worldview of mindless good/evil, which doesn't fit with the more complex world I imagine PE to be--will there be a "demonic" or "demon spawn" race of significant number? I hope to heck not. Lord of the Rings: goblins and orcs. Dragon Age: darkspawn. D&D: all manner of 'evil' things. Blah blah blah. In narrative, a large battle such as forcing your way through a well-organized bandit stronghold might work better, or defending a small village against a coordinated attack (more coordination than a pile of orcs and goblins, at least). Well yea, I wasn't thinking of random encounters, or the evilness of the horde. It's just there's often in games a situation of fighting a tribe or parts of army or something, and I don't like when/if those are represented by 5-12 opponents. So how about defending a frontier village from a war party of those barbarian elves? You're in village, elves attack, no time or chance for diplomacy. Later you could maybe try to resolve the disputes, or wipe out the rest of the elves or the villagers.
  3. Logarithmic? I would think exponential would be better, though still low amounts of exp Exponential amounts of XP necessary to reach the higher levels, yields logarithmic level progression. This. I'd prefer steady leveling without too huge leaps between levels. Can be difficult to balance if there's a significant difference eg. between level 2 and level 3 spells. I have a feeling though, that Eternity will be pretty much D&D by another name, in that case I'd prefer... well heck, I don't have a preference even then. Depends on the story, world and the system.
  4. It took centuries to wipe out & take all land from american indians, they were stone age while the newcomers were already in post plate era. Who's to say what's the history here, is this "new world" or the old, who's coming and who's going? And magic can be the great equalizer.
  5. The first part yeah, the second NO! Yeah, I'd like them to switch targets sometimes, to whoever damages them. Hit them with an axe, yeah, that should get their attention! But no, I don't want my fighter to start "generating aggro" so he's attacked. Would you like some damage sponge enemy suddenly starting to generate aggro, so you can't choose who you attack but have to start spanking the sponge?
  6. Mostly I'd want variety. Single deadly opponents, parties somewhat equal in size to your own and then the occasional Very Large Horde. But! If there's a horde, I don't want them spawning from some source*, I want them all there from the beginning. And I'd like the horde to be big, like war party of 150 goblins coming to you all at once. *Unless it's something meaningful, like begin the fight and after some while a bunch of reinforcements would appear from the barracks.
  7. There was a nice eyeopening scene in the book Musashi, probably also in the manga Vagabond, where a bunch of samurai were discussing the merits of, and whether to adopt and practice the spear or the sword. Most leaning on the spear since it's so much more versatile.
  8. Well.. dammit. Ok, so the <100 votes is not everybody in the world, but I'm obviously in the minority. Again.
  9. Historically the bayonet came centuries after firearms, sometime in the 17th century I think. Now Eternity is obviously not a completely accurate history or europe, but still. I'd prefer just switching to swords when necessary.
  10. Not quite that far. They sold "basic" D&D alongside AD&D (that being 2nd edition I'd guess) in the eighties. The first red box only had rules up to 3rd level characters...
  11. Yeah. I don't like rogues being the damage dealers. I can see the reasoning for it though. Having played D&D 1st edition, thiefs were pretty much worthless in combat. Pretty much worthless all over, can't wear armor, can't hit worth damn, don't do much damage when they hit. And they had to be about level 10 before they could even pickpocet, disarm traps or climb reliably. Meaning, at lower levels they were almost as frustrating as magic users, at later levels they could offer some services outside of combat, but in combat they were still useless. Now.. I'd rather see them be just as good at fighting as Fighters, only with less HP and some bonus skills. Or something.
  12. Depends on the kind of game. I could and would and do enjoy a good story in a totally cliche D&D environment. Known standard world can actually be helpful if you want to get right on the story without distractions. But recently I've again spent an enormous amounts of time playing Mount & Blade (Prophesy of Pendor) and that doesn't have plot at all. Just the sandbox world and fun. And I liked Oblivion and Skyrim more when I wasn't following the plot, but just exploring and goofing around. Voted on Plot.
  13. The way I like to think about it is "magical thing happens". Through experience, one learns to conjure up balls of flame with the power of his mind, the other learns to hide like shadow, passing right before observers eyes without detection, walking through a floor of broken glass without making a sound, the third hits like a wrecking ball and can literally take an axe strike right in the face without flinching. Magical reality, laws of nature dont apply the same way as here in mundania.
  14. I'd like different fighting styles (swashbuckler, duelist, samurai), but it's probably not a good way to spend resources. Maybe for PE2? But I would like some basic style/stance/mode/whatevers, to the tune of defensive/normal/aggressive and see them have a visual difference. But then I'd also like to see aggressive style push the opponents away while with defensive style you'd take a few steps back now and then. (But then I liked NWN chaotic combat and it doesn't sound Eternity is going to be like that.)
  15. There was this one stupid quest in Skyrim (well many of those, but..), but it had a net beginning. You are invited to share a few drinks with one guy, you start gulping them down.... ... and then wake up some town you have never been before, don't know how you got there, and are apparently engaged to someone you dont know or remember.
  16. Since the action (probably) stops while in conversation, I'd like to see a big discussion window that covers just about the whole screen. Big enough text, and if companions pipe in I could use their face icons there saying what they're saying (speech bubbles?). So not: Feargus: Lets leev teh boor sod behind. but: //////// O , O ____ : Lets leev teh boor sod behind.
  17. I don't think the OP is seeking if there's a drawback in being a wizard instead of fighter, but if there's a drawback in wizard wearing armor vs wizard wearing the usual pajamas.
  18. If they went with casting causes fatigue and wearing heavy armor would also add to that...
  19. I'd like them to make the best AI they can to make the opponents act believably, and use that on all difficulty levels. Wouldn't like passive enemies at lower difficulty, nor would I like to see mindless zombies coordinate with military precision on higher ones. I'd like goblins or orcs rush in mad barbarian rage, dark elves trying to trick or ambush and adventure parties fight like they know what they're doing. If there are different AI styles, use them for different opponents, not for different difficulty levels.
  20. Spear and a somewhat large shield was what the ordinary soldiers, line infantry, used until gunpowder weapons made (wooden and leather) shields obsolete. As long as it was mostly arrows from long range, a big shield would give you the best cover. A longspear and a very large shield, ie hoplite or spartan style, would require training to be effective, and so wasn't in use by except higher quality troops, whom would at medieval time mostly fight mounted. Against cavalry charges long pikes were the best defense, halberds and other 2-handed hacking instruments were also pretty good at that, and effective against armored opponents, (and useful at closer range). So When troops of lesser training gave up the shields, they naturally went with one or the other of these. Especially since both pikes and halberds and other pole arms were also pretty cheap to make.
  21. Hated dropping your weapon and noticing it way later somewhere. Hits: more damage, stun, knockdown, blinding (temporarily) Misses: leave yourself open (AC penalty for a turn), fall down (prone penalties, miss turn), lose balance and miss turn Nothing too radical or game breaking for me.
  22. I might be thinking more along the lines of you stumbling on a coven of vampires and if you could convince them your mission is of superior importance, and you'd be a smooth ass talker, you might be able to convince Edward to come along. ... but that wouldn't work out for everybody if you also want to recruit a Billy the Paladin.
  23. Societies, well it'd be ok to see some matriarchal and some patriarchal, would add flavour to the world. But aside someone trying to brush you aside or make snide comments, I can't really see what could be done with them without going to the disturbing adult stuff the society is built on. And I'm not sure that'd be a good direction to take the game. But I would like to see companions coming from these societies, who'd totally subscribe to the customary thinking. "Well I didn't think about it that much, as men are not well suited to thinking." Or something. Male pleasure slave/healer from the Amazon Queens court, who totally accepts female superiority. A former lady in waiting, who firmly believes a womans place is at home, but who's been driven to adventure through occasion.
  24. That's awesome! I'd love to see an NPC or companion like that, would be a fantastically frustrating experience.
