Tutorial: Watercolor Portraits in the GIMP
Karkarov replied to Orillion's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Where is the tip on how to do it though? I don't have a step by step guide. Every time I do it the only thing that is "consistent" is I will cut the portrait out of the background, and do some edge filter/inverting like in this tutorial, but I won't multiply the layer. I will turn white fully transparent and just use the lines as a semi transparent overlay. I also probably delete a lot of them. Beyond that? I hand draw a lot of lines to make certain details pop, I hand delete a lot of details that just become noise, I use 8-10 layers normally, I air brush in shading, increase saturation on one level, lower it on another, there is no "set pattern" to how I do it. I just compare to Obsidian made water color portraits, try to match it, test it in game, make changes based on what didn't look right, rinse wash repeat. Here is the final version of the water color portrait I made for myself, using my custom portrait I made using a Jason Seow portrait combined with the Heodan portrait. That probably took me around 8 hours. That said, it very closely matches the Obsidian portraits. Again, not bashing this tutorial at all. It will work well for line drawings like what he has in the example, in his terms pictures that are "actual art". It just doesn't produce "great" results for more complex images (like the Calisca portrait) without a large amount of extra work. Just bear in mind, my definition of "great" result is I could put in a line of official Obsidian watercolors, and a non fan would not be able to tell it did not belong.

Josh Sawyer's tweets and teasers, part III
Karkarov replied to Amentep's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)I think they can. After all, he said it worked normally in every previous build. Which means this only hit with the pre release build, and may not even be an issue in the real release build.

Is there any place people are gathering save states, for import?
Karkarov replied to prototype00's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Not that I know of, and I hope you know Sawyer saying "minor reactivity" probably means like 2-3 events in game where some NPC says hi to you or references some tiny event in a minor way.

Companion/Sidekick Class Options Revealed
Karkarov replied to Enoch's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)You can make fully custom characters, just like in Eternity 1. Just remember, some of the companions and sidekicks may have unique skills/abilities fully custom characters can't get. Example - Teheku's racial, or Xoti's two subclass options.

Is there any place people are gathering save states, for import?
Karkarov replied to prototype00's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)If bennies means benefits, don't worry, you don't get them regardless. Remember, the game starts with Eothas effectively sucking out part of your soul. You are de leveled to level 1, you lose all your powers. This includes all the powers you gained from story choices.

Josh Sawyer's tweets and teasers, part III
Karkarov replied to Amentep's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)That's bad, lots of people were murdering innocents to get that baby. Just another proof that save imports never ever work 100% properly on release, there is always something wrong with them. If save game import won't work on release then perhaps manual selection of story choices will still work properly? Or you simply weren't sure of either option and ended up getting shoe horned into keeping the baby cause there was no other alternative Either way Sawyer is on it, he knows he can't release without Orlan Baby functionality.

Game comes out tomorrow!
Karkarov replied to Valmy's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)There has always only been three legit reasons to use GoG. No DRM Can play all games offline Support the only real Steam alternative It has always been less convenient and harder to use. I myself agree they need to find a way to start supporting preloading if they ever want to compete with steam legitimately. Until then it will just be die hards like myself who will always choose GoG no matter how inconvenient it is supporting it.

If I Take off my Boots/Shoes, Will my character Appear Barefoot?
Karkarov replied to HowlsOfWater's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Correct. Your boots, gloves, etc, are based on your equipped armor not on the actual items in those slots.

So is multi that much better than single?
Karkarov replied to Sharard's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)While I don't totally agree with the comment about caster synergy that is the crux of it. If two classes have strong synergy they can make a powerful multi class, if they don't, uh you might be lack luster. Imagine a Goldpact Paladin with a fighter, that could make a beastly tank. Or an assassin rogue with a barbarian. But a barbarian wizard? Uh it will sort of work if as wizard you focus on combat buffs, but priest may have worked better for that. All that said, no, multiclasses are not by definition stronger. However they can have some strong combos, try Bleak Walker Assassin for example. Single class do get the 8th and 9th level abilities though, and ultimately end up with more ability choices though not many more.

Josh Sawyer's tweets and teasers, part III
Karkarov replied to Amentep's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)I offered him a free copy of full release a long time ago, he had no interest. He wants BG3, and he knows Eternity will never be that.

I can't *cough* make it *cough*
Karkarov replied to fortuntek's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Actually things used to release mid week everywhere. It was Japan who started to buck the trend when they release a dragon quest (I think it was 4 maybe 5) and so many school kids wanted it, they were basically forced to shut shut down school that day because classes were literally empty. Then they passed an actual law saying Dragon Quest could not release on a weekday. And that is why most things release when they do, laws. I bet if you dug in, there is probably a law saying when the US can release video games etc.

Tutorial: Watercolor Portraits in the GIMP
Karkarov replied to Orillion's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Sorry for the double post, but I tried this method this morning and it works..... okay. Protip. If you are working with an image that is already in a similar style to Deadfire portraits and not hard lines, like say you want to convert the original Calisca portrait, this guide is a bit rough. It wont put out a "bad" result, but it probably wont work super well with pictures that are darker/have a lot of color variance it just becomes sort of muddied. Works great for straight line drawings with hard edges though.

Josh Sawyer's tweets and teasers, part III
Karkarov replied to Amentep's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Because he threw a temper tantrum when they didn’t make the game he wanted them to make understandable to a certain part, IMO, with the time and effort he invested. He and Bester also both lambasted the game on release and refused to even play it. Some of his feedback was also loony, and I told him as much. I don't dislike him, he is actually an okay guy if you get him in normal conversation about other topics. However he literally wanted to change almost every aspect of combat, vastly overhaul the stats, he literally liked nothing about Eternity and was trying to force Obsidian to abandon their vision for his. At some point you have to realize you have crossed the line and are no longer being reasonable. Either way thanks for that IE mod credit, hope you didn't use the UI stuff I spent over 150 hours working on to meet Bester and Sensuki's design specs.

I can't *cough* make it *cough*
Karkarov replied to fortuntek's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Lol I work for the corporate man. See some things about the man is good. Basically he expects you to understand missing work is bad, and if you do it too often you gonna lose your job. So when you call out, he doesn't care why, he just wants to know you aren't showing up and is someone else covering your work.

The problem with multiclassing / nerving
Karkarov replied to Nemesis7884's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)That is not how Obsidian does balancing. They have explained it before back in Eternity 1 beta but what they do is intentionally make abilities a little stronger than they think they should be. Then they test that, and adjust down, or in some cases realize they were wrong and give the ability a big buff until it is op. Then they start that slow slight adjustment down step by step again. Their theory is it is easier to balance by adjusting things down, than by taking them up.

Or maybe I am just tired of RPG Codex bringing their drama and Avellone's bile to this forum. How many times does it need to happen?

[POTD Difficulty] Launch NOT tuned discussion thread
Karkarov replied to Haran's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Exactly, you didn't beat the game on path of the damned if you toggled the difficulty off of it, or started it at a lower setting. PS - they have already said path of the damn is undertuned right now and too easy so why not jump in on it at release?

are we getting a vorpal sword or holy avenger?
Karkarov replied to master guardian's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)Otherwise there would be a macuahuitl in the game now *sniff* I mean, there could be one now? A Macuahuiti is really just a club with sharpened spikes in it to be honest. You could fit it in the sword or one hand mace group.

Deadfire requirements revealed
Karkarov replied to Wormerine's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)A 960 is not a big bar to 60 fps at max settings by any standard, and you don't even know what they are saying that is for. They may have said 960 because that is what it takes for 60fps on 4k and at 1080 a 960 isn't needed. I get it, money is very tight for some people, it is for me too right now. Maybe not as much as others, but still. I understand people who can not justify a new pc, or new pc components for a game. But to be perfectly honest, the required specs to run this game could be met by a 300 dollar pc. Heck, here you go 250 dollar PC off amazon and that meets all recommended specs except graphics. If you don't have a 960, just try playing at your highest settings, if you see some frame loss, just turn down particle effects or something. If you want a better graphics card though again here you go 190 dollar graphics card that is basically equal to a 960. For consideration, this is what an Xbox costs these days. So yes you can build a PC that meets the recommended specs of this game, for less money than what the newest version of an Xbone costs.
