  1. I really wish The Banner Saga had a fast-forward option.

  3. F3/NV=Apples, F1/2= Oranges. A combat encounter with Deathclaws in F1/2 is fundamentally not the same scenario. By the way, have you ever heard of sneak attack criticals and sniping? That was the ideal (as in most effective,) method of dealing with Deathclaws (and pretty much everything else,) in 3/NV. Deathclaws always closed to melee range in F1/2 unless you devoted all your AP to running away (and you'd need a lucky god**** roll to take out a Deathclaw's leg in one shot before they could reach you,) and even then they'd still catch up if you had a character with low AP. Once they've closed the distance there's no benefit in shooting their legs anymore, as the scenario it's intended to prevent has already occurred. If they're at that range your chance of hitting them in the eyes is maximized, as far as range-dependent penalties go, and aiming for the eyes has the highest critical threat range of any roll, so there's no reason not to unless you're wearing APA, carrying a Gauss Pistol and want to show everyone who's the boss by shooting all the Deathclaws in the groin.
  4. Or lead to save-scumming because a lucky roll by an enemy results in your favorite character suddenly vanishing from the game without even having the courtesy to bleed to death. I think the basic idea here is already well-covered by the difficulty levels with permadeath active.
  5. "Fear" is an awfully strong word. I mean, it's not like you're going to lose sleep when your hand-painted Warhammer figures fail to flinch and ragdoll when killed, right? ...right?
  6. No need to drop everything and scramble to rework the map design just to shamelessly copy some other game.
  7. It is perplexing why these works of art have not had gallery openings attended by the captains of industry and most turtlenecked of art world celebrities.
  8. Not a minor NPC by any definition. She was played by Carrie-Anne Moss and had an entire DLC devoted to letting players, as Shepard, try to bone her.
  9. ] I was referring to his mark ability, more specifically.
  10. The concept of a given character gaining experience for making kills is pretty much the standard for turn-based tactical games. If you want to improve a specific character's level you need to deliberately design a situation to set up the ideal conditions for that character to get a kill. I had Alette and Oddleif up to lv3 before Iver was even lv2 (normal.) It can be risky, but it can be worth it, especially to upgrade their armor damage. Rook is a beast, though.
  11. The Banner Saga's great aside from the lack of proofreaders/editing and punctuation (sentences ending without punctuation! IT'S MADNESS.)
  12. That's not exactly a great technical hurdle. It's frequently done in JRPGs like Persona 3 & 4, in which different characters will, at least in the Japanese version, use the player character's surname or given name depending on the level of familiarity or formality in their relationship. That's just... why? Why would someone's name arbitrarily and suddenly change based on a sliding scale of morality which does not exist in the game? The idea of there being title associated with a given faction or actions makes sense and has been done in games.
  13. Oh, Skyrim. Did it not bother anyone but me that LoS shamelessly ripped off Shadow of the Colossus?
  14. You might as well complain about experience point notifications, how are those immersive? When you read a book do you get notified about how much experience you gained for reading for an hour? Achievement notifications are part and parcel if you're playing a non-GOG version of a game. Bastion's achievements are just "Completed X Level"/"Completed X Level at X/Y Difficulty" with a different name. And also "Fully upgrade every weapon." Team Fortress 2 is what i'd point to for interesting achievements, although since it's a multiplayer FPS most of the concepts aren't applicable.
  15. Improved armor penetration/negation isn't as romantic as cutting a dashing noble figure with a fine longsword. It doesn't help that game designers frequently make the base damage of blunt weapons lower than that of swords, especially when it's a game whose sword animations consist entirely of slashing motions which wouldn't even penetrate simple iron chainmail. Unless it was some kind of atomic-level sharp carbon fiber sympathetic vibrating plasma-coated sword. Those sorts of weapons are decidedly pre-bronze age. Bottom tier weapons for fending off opponents wearing woolen britches and linen shirts as armor.
  16. I don't care if they give bonuses or not, I'm more interested in them just being interesting or creative. Not the typical "Complete X Quest" or "Reach X Level." Those sorts of achievements are basically just one big "played the game from start to finish" achievement.
  17. It's tragic that the rest of the world isn't privy to this.
  18. I should go for a Master's in Abnormal Psychology with a study/thesis on this phenomenon of people inventing problems to rage against despite an absence of evidence that such a problem exists, or even the existence of evidence that contradicts such beliefs.
  19. I am extremely incredulous about this post. As such, I will continue the ongoing activity of satirizing this post by stating my desire to see the soundtrack prominently feature the theremin.
  20. I got Anno 2070 because it was on sale (they've constantly shilled it on Steam over the years but I could never decide out whether or not I was interested,) I can't figure out if it's trying to be Sim City, Civilization or Command & Conquer, all with an incredibly dense/cluttered and opaque UI which nevertheless assumes that the player is someone so far on the autism spectrum they can't infer the emotions or intents of rather less-than-subtle characters without tooltips explaining "X is making excuses to try to shift blame away from himself because he wishes to advance in the corporate heirarchy, thereby resulting in increased monetary income and an improved social status, a situation which would increase the comfort and pleasure of his living conditions." And apparently the devs think turbines are a critical load-bearing element of a dam, as opposed to the dam itself. Needless to say, I gave it about 30 minutes before going back to The Cave. Thumbs up to The Cave, so far.
  21. Since I can't seem to find any bourbon, and it's almost 8 AM, wodka. Some cheapo brand from the TV, the one with the stupid robot girls that are not sexy and not terminators. Alcohol is just a cover for excess urine consumption.
  22. You must search all the rooms carefully, furniture is not what it appears to be Scan every pixel with your cursor, no "hold tab to highlight all interactive objects" here. Probably not a good idea to play at a resolution greater than 640x480.
  23. There is no "epic level." You're never going to be a WoW style stupidly-flashy ubergod whose glowing aura, stupid glowing armor and weapons and flaming eyeballs causes peasants to kowtow in awe at your presence. There will be NPC reactivity to the player. But how exactly would one of them distinguish between a level 1 PC and a level 10 PC? There's not likely to be much more than differentiation between peasant rags and well-maintained steel plate. Or the chiseled abs of a competent monk.
