Edér: What happened?
Ryz009 replied to Galagraphia's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Oh my.. that is... a terrible idea I don't think I could ever finish that playthrough. Also you're in for a surprise if you romance Aerie. Just saying. Haer'Dalis actually is extremely useful, especially when you get the upgraded bard song he's very powerful. I tried, I really tried to romance Aerie. But after the umpteenth complaint about the trauma of losing her wings-- wings <CHARNAME> never had, made to a guy who just saw his sister kidnapped and half his companions killed, to say nothing of the trauma conga line that was BG-- I just had to tell her to STFU. And that ended that. It will never cease to amaze me how minor bioware npcs issues are compared to the PCs and yet how they'll go on and on and on about it and not even acknowledge the PCs issues. It's magical. Another reason I loved Eder was because he actually was supportive and didn't ignore the Watcher's feelings. -
Wizards...butchered.
Ryz009 replied to Hebruixe's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
as someone playing with 2 wizards in the party. The friendly fire is really easily worked around if you have enough int. The yellow border can be quite generous and I usually position my tanks right on the edge while I can still nuke without a care. (later levels I stop caring because the tanks shrug it off but that always happens). -
That's fair that sort of thing just bores me to tears though. Thaos wasn't compelling enough the lady Hadret stuff just made me feel like she was a plot device to info dump the player because of Thaos cloak and dagger not being resolvable without a magic plot device and Thaos killed her after her role was done, Maewald's main issue seemed to be his two souls screwed each other over and the PC has no similar thing to go through so it's like "you went crazy cause you past selves screwed each other over." the PC got screwed over by Thaos them going mad the way Maewald did never made much sense to me. But I'm just left thinking "why do I care?" Like without a personal conflict I just can't give a damn. It's less the player being the center of it all (In deadfire Eothas clearly steals the show yet I'm fine with it your whole job in deadfire is being someone's errand boy (Berath, the pirates, the Hauna, so on) it's more the lack of any fire in the plot. It's not something that gets me excited to see the end. But yeah it's clearly a ymmv situation. That is pretty much what old school cRPGs have always been like, though... I mean, not even the child of Baal story in BG was really a personal one. It was much more about the power and who wanted it/got it in the end... and what impact that would have on the world. The player character in those games was much more a protagonist (or even antagonist) you made up to be YOUR focus in the story (much like the lead character in a novel) then the selfinstert surrogate many modern RPGs make the main character out to be... if that makes sense. ? BG1 opens with Sarevok killing your father figure. How is that not personal? Like you leave the city and your dad figure gets murder faced protecting you. The first few dreams you get are about said murder. It's very personal. All those people are trying to kill the protagonist and he/she might be a unique snowflake because of the father figure that Sarevok killed. BG2 opens up with Irencius torturing you and Imoen your sister figure. Again that's very personal. He stole your things and killed one of your companions as well. (unless you played evil but BG2 stops making alot of sense if you're evil). Like I haven't played many crpgs but the BG games are very much a case of the antagonist personally screwing you over and you kicking their butts because of it. True. If you weren't generic minion number 17 in a previous life but rather, someone with a significant connection, that would have worked better. Yeah it really needed a personal hook that was present. Iovara was too little too late.

Can't say much about Deadfire's story, but to me the PoE story only got good in retrospect... I mean, even if the "twist" isn't really imaginative, it has interesting context throughout the game. Many of the main story beats, as well as the side stuff, get quite some more depth, once the ending rolls around. Also, the world and characters had just the right balance of familiar and strange... but that, again might just be me. Yeah during the actual game it was meh. That said at least White Mach was compelling all the way through and showed the learned something. I was really so so on it. If I hadn't clicked with Eder and Aloth I probably would've dropped it when I reached Gilded Vale. I think the cast of characters is what saved it for me too. I wasn't really drawn into the story - possibly because events that happened in a previous life don't work as a personal motivation (?). Yeah and it's not like you and Thaos were even that close to each other. He was just your leader so it's not even like you're chasing down your friend/brother/lover from a past life to get answers about why they screwed you over. It really doesn't help that the relationship isn't explained til near the final stretch either. Most of my favorite villains have a very personal hook to the player (Irenius, Li, Malak, so on). So when they screw you over there's an actual hook. Thaos lacked that severely. Like the past life thing can work...but it has to be someone close to you then and whose close to you now. And Thaos failed on both those fronts.

I didn't like POE1's story that much. I did like Eder and Aloth and that was enough for me to keep playing. But the storyline? Hollowborn children, Thaos who I had no strong feelings about (which is terrible for an antagonist), Iovara who gets randomly dumped on you near the end of the game, some malady my character is suffering from that's only explained via crappy dream sequences that explain nothing. It's just...I don't see what people really liked about POE1's story. It was serviceable but it certainly wasn't good. Deadfire at least gave me a personal connection with Eothas though it's not all that great either the faction quests at least make up for that failing.

Edér: What happened?
Ryz009 replied to Galagraphia's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Giggle. Always wondered what people thought of the only romanceable male character. Personally after the first playthrough I've always randomly murdered Anomen just to rid the world of his whining I started a new party with all characters I hate: Aerie, Anomen, Cernd, Nadia, and Haer'Dalis. It's been... interesting. Sidenote: Haer'Dalis is really good! I don't remember Blades being that useful in the original game, but he's tearing #$#% up in EE. Yeah I couldn't do it. I tried but I ended up killing everyone myself and picking up some mod companions. Well mod companions and Dorn <3 Like I rather romance a psycho half-orc than Anomen. Smh. -
Yes, they could have made it available for the beta backers. It would at least have allowed them to fix these bugs from release. I didn't get any spoilers of DOS2. Was it a problem? I don't think so. Nope the only spoiler was for the first act which isn't really of a spoiler honestly. THey could've made Fort Deadlight, Port Maje and the two backer islands we originally got available. Enough to wet the appetite and see any import issues (and disposition issues) without really spoiling the meat of the game.
-
The sad thing is a lot of those bugs could've been reportable if the beta had actual storyline content in it. But spoiler-phobia ended up ruining what could've been a great opportunity for beta testing. Divinity Original Sin benefited greatly from having its first act open to backers and early access.

Empowered Woedica
Ryz009 replied to Sceptenar's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Cake is a lie, you know? Anyway, I've checked and yea, Eder has +5 Max Health boon. That's fine I guess, I didn't do it for the Dyrwood anyway, but for Pallegina to be pardoned by the ducs ending. It even imported properly, surprisingly, and she had an extra talk about it. Should've at least gave him 2 extra resolve. -
A shame, for Zahua was both hilarious and well-written. I know but I did WM so late I was pretty done with switching my party around xD Yea, this. Durance, Aloth, and Eder were the only characters who had detailed arcs paced over the whole game. Everybody else was basically like "I have 1 problem. Please fix it." And then they proceed to stop talking to you once it's fixed. Yeah the thing is the companions quests leave a lot to be desired. Either they're constant rest and talk to me abit for more scraps of information quests (Grieving Mother, Durance) or they're fix this one issue and we'll never discuss it again (most everyone else). The POE1 and POE2 companion quests leave much to be desired.

The unfortunate fact of the matter is that 99% of reviews will not do this. They will simply move on to the next release and never think about Deadfire again. Same with all the potential consumers who see the negative reviews and think "I'll check up on this later". I've had this same argument with communities of games in Early Access. They don't realize that you only get to make one big splash at launch. You get the spotlight for exactly 1 day, whether that's beta, or early access, or a bug-ridden mess of a launch. Even if it's patched to perfection 2 weeks after launch, the vast majority of people have already moved on. There are so many games coming out these days, it's ludicrous to expect the average gamer to even keep up with patches and improvements for games they own, much less ones they don't. The people here are fans of Obsidian, and we know Obsidian will (mostly) fix all the bugs and polish up the game over the next several months. But the larger audience only sees this game on launch day. If it weren't for the import/history bug, this game would probably have been "overwhelmingly positive" on Steam for at least the first two days or so. That would have gone a very long way for the cRPG revival. To be clear, I'm not putting any blame on reviewers. If the game is bugged, the review needs to reflect that. I'm putting the blame on Obsidian, who seem to be unable to break out of this habit of releasing their games too early and fixing it post-launch. This sort of carelessness reflects extremely poorly on one of my favorite genre of games. It makes me sad. We have been lacking high-budget cRPGs since the days of KotOR and NWN, and the fact that Deadfire had half peak players as PoE1 on launch will not improve the situation. This is why Obsidian's "oh we don't wanna spoil" beta made me shake my head. You know how many issues DOS1 &2 early access caught? Loads. The import issue would've been reported the first day of early access. The companion issues also would've been reported early on. There was no reason to get us absolutely zero critical path to check and all it did was backfire on them.

Edér: What happened?
Ryz009 replied to Galagraphia's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
There is? I would have liked to see this. Right. I wasn't expecting it at all. When I saw the the option I had to see how it would play out. My character's relationship with her was minus one at the time. No cruelty points. I think her response while you're crushing the air out of her is something like... "I'll stop I didn't know you two were intended." Xoti will bring it up again though when she hits positive or negative 2 with Eder, and if you chose the back off/choke line you can remind her and she will completely drop it. Crazy. Oh god lol at the PC being able to be a crazy thinks they're in a relationship when they're not with Eder. That's too perfect. -
Yes. Serafan, Pallegina, Aloth and Eder all have plenty of nonromantic content. Xoti and Taekhu are pretty thirsty though but you can shut fishboy down without him going on about it. Xoti apparently is a different matter but you can probably avoid that by never flirting with her. That said I didn't find the POE1 companions all that great outside of Eder and Aloth. (granted I didn't use the WM companions)

Edér: What happened?
Ryz009 replied to Galagraphia's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Like I get being disappointed but angry? Naaah. Maybe I'm too used to the husbando/waifu wars but I can't get angry that I don't have a certain romance option. I tend to just appreciate the ones I have. (Except in BG2 case because my only option was a douchecanoe and to have my PC act like a doormat.) -
D:OS has practically no banter so that's one thing they saved on. Their companions have like zero reaction to one another. (It's one of my main issues with DOS really. It really revolves around the PC). There's no back and forth like there is in deadfire. That said I would say a lot of DOS length came from its turn based combat. There's a lot of fights in DOS where I'm twiddling my thumbs waiting for the enemies to *finally* move. Compared to POE the combat is vastly slower. Also DOS1 when it came out got a lot of crap for its writing. That was slightly improved in the Enhanced Edition and even more improved in DOS2. But their storyline wasn't all that great to begin with no. EVen DOS2 has a really big problem with the final act being buggy and disjointed. It's just near the end of the game which most people won't see. (Also DOS1 is more difficult but Deadfire will hopefully improve that with balance patches though there were broken things in DOS2 at launch looking at you Marksman.) They also had the benefit of being very open with their audience and giving us a lot more to work with for the early access beta. For DOS2 and DOS1 you got pretty much all of act 1 where Obsidian was so scared of spoilers all we got was 2 islands that weren't related to anything else. If they had done what Larian had done and give us actual story content just early on story content most of the import bugs that show up early on would've been caught. Same with some balance issues.

I loved how long BG2 was in general and how long the critical path was. It was just right for an RPG, nothing felt as a filler. Persona 5 is so long because it's linear and practically everything there is critical path, aside from Mementos, but even those are tied to the main plot. I don't know Cheatue Irenicus was pretty fillerish I mean yeah there's story content but it's buried in filler fights and silly puzzles (also that walking speed is...questionable) The rest of it it was from meh to outstanding. And they felt the absurd need to constantly repeat information you got five minutes ago. My god P3 and P4 was far less repetitive.
