I've been surprised by stronger enemies even in quests that have no skulls, so I always keep some figurines ready.

Poor child was tired. Maybe that place is really good at controlling souls and none could get a ride.

Maybe empower could open access to them for a time and you could cast those spells at double cost, that is, one per level.

I have only Serafen in my first run. And that is because of my pirate character. I'll leave the others for later, hoping they will fix any remaining disposition/companion bugs and maybe even improve something else. Some conversations need at least one more option (neutral). What if I don't want to have any points in rational, benevolent, diplomatic and stoic? Ok, it's a minor thing, but it would be nice. Let's hope they add more options and revise things like this in the free ship and crew DLC.- How do I write with spoilers tag?

I had some difficult battles on Veteran, but nobody was knocked unconscious yet. What is your party composition? It can make a huge difference. I have an Assassin (Watcher), a Brute (Rekke), A Sorcerer (Fassina), a Cipher (Serafen) and the last spot has been changing (Chanter, Wizard most of the time). I only had my character, Eder and Xoti. It's them wyverns or whatever in the camp before you get Aloth. Don't worry then. That fight is difficult. I barely made it.- Ydwin
