  2. Ok, 2 hours in and I can give my early impressions on JA3. First off, they've captured the tone and feel of JA2. It's no surprise that Ian Currie is behind it, because it feels like Jagged Alliance. It starts out just like JA2. You create a character. You contract some mercs. You land in a hotspot. The AIM desktop is very well done. Moving around the map is pretty simple. I'm still working out the combat, but it looks like you are going to be able to set up some pretty good ambushes. It's weird not having percentages when you try to shoot someone. Right now Ice is basically my killer and then I have a bunch of specialists that are so-so. Barry and Red for bombs, Livewire for mechanicals, and MD for medical. Livewire is a bit annoying, but she will probably grow on me. Actually Ice's character is oddly off putting. Think C. Thomas Howell in Soul Man. Other than that, the Mercs all seem pretty similar to the previous games and the NPC's are decent. Anyways, I'm a couple areas in, so I'll post more as I get deeper later.

  3. If you have more than one 4K display, then it does. Suck your power, that is. AMD's latest "fix" to the idle power draw issue made it worse by 10%. Some things will never change. Should be fine with a single monitor setup nowadays though. But don't worry, actually lowered idle power draw, FSR 3.0 and HYPR-RX are just around the corner. Like Star Citizen, or Half Life 3. *snark* Other than that, the XTX is an RTX 4080 with more rasterization but less raytracing performance - for cheaper. Can't really go wrong with it, unless you have an AMD allergy like I do.

  4. I'll miss the council sessions. Daeran is hilarious. And I can't wait to follow Regill's advice when I play evil. Ember approves of your comment. Keep her in your party and you'll get along just fine.

  7. So you play a divorced barbarian lady who has to fight through hordes of scantily clad monsters and bloodthirsty girls to get to her deadbeat no-good former husband and smack him with alimony hammer, right?

  8. Iirc the original initial project name on Kickstarter was something like "something something Eternity" which they changed to Pillars of Eternitity because it sounded cool. Later they came up with the whole Adra stuff being quintessential for the way the world works and I guess it was no coincidence it fit the name nicely. The devs speak about this in the documentary:

  10. The middle person looks like Rachael from Blade Runner after she dumped Deckard's ass and started her own shadowrunning agency (with Jeff Goldblum-esque figure in the bottom right as her trusty second-in-command shaman), and I'd totally watch this movie.

  12. While I would summarize this review for the tl;dw crowd as "mixed bag", I do like what I see and hear here. The fact that the game is hard and unforgiving is a plus in my book, Jagged Alliance is supposed to be hard and unforgiving. I can see how a nigh overwhelming amount of systems can be daunting to newcomers, but I'm not a newcomer, I want maximum tactical control, even if that amount of control comes at the price of not being newbie friendly and cluttered UI. Releases tomorrow.

  14. To quote David Foster Wallace and his great essay on Terminator 2: "Plot and character implausibilities are to be handled through distraction rather than resolved through explanation." (The essay, in a fairly uncomfortable layout, can be found at https://www.michaelfuchs.org/re/index.php?story=2010-03-01.)

  15. one of the gods eventual answers that exact question. so you only need wait a few dozen hours to get get your answer. however, keep in mind wotr ain't dostoyevsky. if you are expecting a good explanation, you will be disappointed. owlcat takes the anime approach and feeds you a plate full o' implausible exposition and then just kinda moves forward as quick as possible hopeful you won't dwell on the inadequacy o' their contrived explanation. an observation from captain obvious: wotr is an EPIC adventure in which mortals is the driving force in a conflict between vast and enigmatic cosmic forces. the main goal is to make the players feel important and powerful and not to reveal heretofore hidden or unrealized truths about the human condition. hoonding's character is vital and the answer you seek need only confirm that necessity. HA! Good Fun!

  16. Okay Grounded. Love the game, but for us loners, I wouldn't mind an update, where in a new game, the whole four characters are there. So 3 are NPCs. Obviously, two players, two NPCs. We all run off out. The other 3 disappear until you build a bed and a chair for each one. You'll find them relaxing in their chairs at random. They'll have random conversations with you, and they can be seen relaxing in your spa. Now once you have brought them back with their own beds and chairs, you can set gathering missions for them each day. What they gather each day or each time period is limited by the weapon and armour you gift them. i.e. no armour, they can only gather pebbles or plant fibre. Increase their armour and weapons, opens up to greater variety of items they can gather. Make the game so you don't feel alone. The last mission defending the three mixr cylinders. Make it harder, but the NPCs help. When growing big. They will gather around.

  17. crazycakes is 99% good enough to disarm traps and open locks. few wotr traps is genuine lethal regardless. is also maybe a couple chests where your main character will be solo, thus the 99%. if you are genuine concerned, put one point in traps and with skill and dex boosts you should be able to overcome those exceeding rare obstacles. however, spotting traps and hidden stuff is the other aspect o' the thief skills. perception is also a useful dialogue skill. ideally your main character should have high perception, but most perception checks is gonna be overcome by your party. wotr offers multiple party npcs who may achieve high perception, but if you got them positioned at the rear o' your party, they may be poor situated to spot traps before your vanguard stumbles across 'em. regardless, we would say if you are willing to suffer camellia for the entire game, she should be satisfactory at handling "rogue stuff." HA! Good Fun!
