Update #15: PayPal, Polish and Russian support, $2.5M/$2.6M stretch goals, new reddit Q&A, classes, and art!

Nice. So the classes seem to have plenty of warrior (fighter, ranger, monk, barbarian) and caster (wizard, priest, druid, cypher) types but seem lacking in the sneaky/utility area (just Rogue). Maybe they can add a Bard at 2.8 or 3 million or something?

No heartbreaker fantasy here. Please veer further away from that, Obsidian. ;)

Oh, and no paladins. Play a battle priest. No overly simplistic alignment systems in PE, move along...

The KS Collector's Edition does not include the Collector's Book.

Which game hook brought you to Project Eternity and interests you the most?

PE will not have co-op/multiplayer, console, or tablet support (sources): [0] [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

Write your own romance mods because there won't be any in PE.

The comments about the Russian distribution are interesting. I hope Obsidian looks into some of those problems.

It wasn't only Russian, it's same situation for other Eastern European countries. I really hope Obsidian does not dismiss this issue and there is some clarification on who is doing translations and/or if we'll have content available through other channels than them.

My only assumption is if there's already some kind of agreement in place just by virtue of announcing in Kickstarter, judging by the wording: "And, for our Polish- and Russian-speaking fans - we are very happy to announce that distributors in Poland and Russia will be handling localization for these two languages, so we will be able to provide them without requiring a stretch goal!" ---so even if they'd like to change, they probably wouldn't be able to...

That is possible. It's why I'd prefer to know for sure. If it's part of an exclusive deal with 1C/Cenega, akin to what Bethesda did with FO:NV/Skyrim (=region lock on Steam, likely to affect any content down the road), I'd rather know. This would enable me to make an informed decision as to keeping/adjusting my own pledge and a recommendation to those friends who are likely to wait for a localised, boxed version.

ARRGHT !!

Cenega/1C. NO, No, NO , NO !

Now I need clarification : would I be able to play original english version of game or not, and will my copy be locked only to Easter Europe.

Please give a clear answer - I may love Obsidian but I will not give a single penny to those bastards at Cenega, especially if this means I can't play in English or get possible DLCs.

I am very excited about the party creation aspect. I am glad the devs are offering this. It was something that was important to me as a player. Thanks devs! Great update.

Lets meet that target!

Hey but I don't understand a thing: the PayPal campaign will end along with that of Kickstarter or continue after the end of this?

Ok, cause it’s really HUGE deal for me; I am going to make a second, large post concerning Polish/Russian distribution.

What I will be writing down from perspective of someone living in Poland and somewhat likes Steam – I love games which are DRM-free, I hate DRMs but somehow Steam, and Steam only, has appealed to me. That’s why I would like to have PE connected with my Steam account. And that is where all of my hate is beginning to be alive.

1C/Cenega has a very particular manner of locking down games distributed in Eastern Europe – I cannot buy games on steam which are under their distribution. But… not a huge deal, I still get them in Cenega store right?

Not entirely. I can buy the vanilla thing but not even a single freaking expansion pack to F3, F: NV, Skyrim etc. is legally available to me*. And that are only examples of games with such problems.

So if I want to play PE on steam, I will be unable to buy DLC’s if there will be any.

But let’s say that the problem above is gone.

I still have to wait for the game to be translated before the release (I have not seen a single distributor who sold English only version of game, if translation was intended) and I have no guarantees that it will be available for me in completely English version. There are numerous examples of games which were released only in my native language and I hope I don’t have to explain why I hate translations and dubbing especially.

Let’s say we have overcome even that problem.

Then what we have to deal with is very bad translators. As I usually don’t play in Polish language I can only repeat my friend’s opinions which are… not good to put it lightly. There are only a few games that were translated well enough not to laugh at translation every goddamn third sentence.

And about the dubbing… I am speechless. I still don’t get why companies do that.

Ok, but… there are people who don’t know English I get it, Polish translation is needed, even if bad.

Ho-ho-ho, welcome to customer support hell. We have many distributors here in Poland but only two which give me +1000 rage bonus – EA Games and Cenega. Terrible is an adjective which should have been invented to describe their support.

And then there is my own prejudice against most of distributors in my country and especially Cenega.

I would gave all of my money to Obsidian but if it means giving a single penny to that companies I may get off the board.

I apologize for a bit chaotic opinion but I am really worried. If Cenega is mixed in this, will there be at least an option for bypass them in matters of downloading the game?

Tl;dr: Hurr, durr I don’t like most of polish distributors, especially Cenega because of bad translations, terrible customer support, enforced polish-only games, most-likely later game release in my country, and FUBAR on Steam concerning Cenega games.

Please give a clear answer: How this distribution is going to look like? Will anyone be forced to stick with those distributors? Will I have to stick with non-English version of game? Steam lock?

Cause I am really worried now.

*I am describing situation in some time after the release of game. After waiting long time I can re-buy the game in “Deluxe/Complete” Ed and have the DLCs. But not before. And not in Polish store but Steam.

**And maybe those distributors will only do the translation... ? Meh... I need answers .

I wonder if all classes permit pacifists runs. I've been a fan of druids since Nox and my first character in every fantasy game has always been a druid. NWN 1&2, Baldur's Gate, Divinity 2, Titan Quest... Druids don't look very pacifist though.

I'll start a rogue or cipher gladly if I have to but it brings up a good question: should every class have possibilities to avoid fights, according to their skills? A warrior can intimidate, a druid can charm animals, a priest can call the faith of their enemies...

Personally, I'm in. It's not hard to code and it brings depth to the skill trees.

And by the way, nice McCoy shirt, M. Josh Sawyer.

It depends on how the class is constructed. I found them useful in the D&D type games as long as I was able to have a large enough party. If playing with a group of only 3 characters then I'm very unlikely to pick a bard as I like to have at least one class focused for each vital area (e.g. a fighter to tank, a priest to heal, a wizard to AoE damage). In a game like Project Eternity, where you have a party of up to 6, I think there is plenty of room in the party to have a bard type character. They kind of do a bit of everything, but the important thing they provide is bard songs. Bard songs are extremely useful as buffs/debuffs, especially at high levels. High level bard songs are quite powerful and can completely change the complexion of a battle.

This was the best update so far!

Now we know about the classes wich is great. It seems like there will be a lot of flexibilty no matter wich class you choose, and I think that will be very interesting. There's a risk that character roles will overlap this way, but I have faith in Obsidian. Getting the classes right will have a very heavy effect on the game, and I bet they arebrainstorming like mad about this. Allowing us to add custom made followers is als a nice touch, since it can help with replayability. I know I'll at some point roam the world with six monks in my party.

Classes sound good to me.. familiar yet flexible enough to build as you like.

However, not too excited after finding out all classes get superhuman powers or magic-like talents. That to me sounds like superhero comics and the lameness of Dragon Age 2.

When I play a Rogue or a Fighter I want them to be humans - ordinary, non-magical yet arse kicking humans with legendary skills. Magic-like talents take the edge off their coolness, in contrast to spellcasters, since they essentially become some kind of magic-users.

So please, don't make Rogues magic-users. That's what Wizards and Priests are for. Pretty please?

And I don't really get "Cipher". It sounds more like a secret agent or decryption specialist. How about "Mystic"?

As soon as I heard cipher in the video I immediately thought the spelling would be Psypher or something like that as it is the "psy" that relates to the mind.

Cipher is a cleric sitting in an office doing Admin, though paperwork can sometimes instigate brain death.

Also is it just me or is there a few hiccups in the video, it almost looks like images being displayed for a split second and then the video continues. Look at 34-38 seconds in the video as well as the last 5 or 6 seconds though it happens 3 or 4 times during the full length...maybe its just me.

Okay, so not a huge deal, but what kind of weird resolution is 1650x1050? I'm grateful for something other than 16:9, but I wasn't expecting 11:7. :p

Yeah, what's 1650x1050? Should have been 1680x1050

16:10 is my preferred aspect ratio.

I saw those, too. I kept trying to pause the video right then to see if there was a hidden message.

I actually think it makes a lot of sense that in a world were souls are such a huge deal and everyone knows the power they hold that even "normal" fighters would learn how to channel their soul power into say their sword edge to give them that extra bit of power against an overwhelming foe.

i hated hw in DnD an epic level fighter (20+) never developed special fighting moves that could put him even remotely on par with a mage of equal level...this to me is a refreshing take on it.

And also, rogues have always been able to use wands, scrolls, potions and devices as part of their class skills...thats nothing new.

and lastly "Mystic"? No, that implies something else entirely...if anything call them Psychics or preferably "Psyfers".

its called subliminal messaging...Obsidian is planting the seeds of guilt in our minds just in case we haven't pledge yet...or enough.

I cannot say i am hyped about the Barbarian class (the cipher sounds exciting though). I've never played barbaran in all my BG/Icewind Dale campaign.

I wanted to propose another type of class.

Since we are soon coming to the stretch goal crafting..

What about an engineer class ?

Skilled in guns/pistols, able to craft bombs and traps, creating a wall reflecting bullet, shockwave...etc.. (yeah one of my favorite game is Arcanum, indeed lol).

As for crafting more than adding plans that usually aren't better than the loot you can find. Wouldn't be better to add a way to customize your equipment with a limitation..?

Like only 3 slots on each weapon/armor.

For example on a gun being able to customize, the range , the load, accuracy, shooting rate of the gun..?

I always thought that the best crafting model i have seen (even if it was really limited) was the one done on Jagged Alliance.

Making sense in the setting or not, If you start handing out magical powers to everyone there's a very thin line before you cross over to DragonballZ.

Instead of making high level Fighters and Rogues comically powerful, I would rather tone down the high level spellcasters and the potency and abundancy of magic. That would be a refreshing take after all the 'awesome' anime RPG's where magic equals spamming nonstop fireworks.

And Rogues using magic items is entirely different from Rogues being innately magical and using spell-like powers.

being able to endure pain, recover quicker from wounds and make attacks more devastating through sheer will power (aka soul power) is in no way shape or form even remotely close to Dragon Ball Z...that's a terrible comparison and you should feel bad for making it :disguise:

and have you ever heard of Shadow Dancers? or a multitude of other high level rogue abilities? if those don't count as quasi-magical i can't conceive of your rationale for them.

Well that didn't take long. Full Party Creation? Oh, hell yeah!

I knew Obsidian would get it done.

Now we just need to see what final form this all takes, including how party members other than the first PC are involved in conversations.

Harumph!
