As revelaed by Pete Hines, Skyrim will actually feature no weapon or armor degradation, but will instead allow players to create and improve their weapons and armor using the game

otoh, I think its great. Weapon and armor repair is just busy work, nothing more. Very happy to see it gone.

 

 

SKyrim is sounding better and better every dang day.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

Doesn't sound different enough from Oblivion at the moment for me to be really excited. i.e. there's a lot of fun stuff in there, but I wish some of the disappointments that inevitably come with an Oblivion-style game (e.g. a world that becomes increasingly hollow and lifeless as you explore, a character level up / loot / reward / preen system that increasingly becomes meaningless and dull after the first ten levels....) would be addressed or at least shaken up.

 

I would like to just take a romp around a nice looking fantasy world though, there's been way too many dystopian sci-fi near future settings lately.

i never liked the degradation in morrowind or oblivion (or even fallout). i like the idea of using the repair skill to improve gear, perhaps it should be changed from repair to "smithing" though, so it doesnt mislead?

Couldn't agree more. In the end it's probably about the same thing, but it's much more interesting to take something and make it better or different vs. just trying to keep it working at the same base level/functionality.

 

The way weapon and armor degradation was handled in FO3 was my least favorite thing about the game by far. Unfun and horribly annoying without adding anything positive to the game whatsoever.

 

Hopefully, Beth has seen this and we'll see no more of it in any of their rpg IPs.

picking up health and ammo is busy work?

 

i'd much rather pick up health and ammo in most games. but that was a nice attempt at A=B or whatever you were doing :p

 

i never thought it was realistic OR fun that after 1 fight your sword and armor needed to be repaired. it just felt stupid.

 

In FO3 i modded the game so every weapon had about 4x the endurance before it needed to be repaired, and repairs could be made with pretty much any similar weapon. that felt much better to me.

 

 

edit: actually, in games that have NO inventory management, then i dont see any need to have to pick up ammo or health. but if the game has an inventory system, then yeah you should have to pick up the stuff to put it in your inventory. otherwise its just messy

Not just that, but I actually watched the HD 20 minute clip of the game last night, and what I had discounted as artifact of video compression ~is still there... I find that the land, the water, and the foliage all look plastic to me. The mesh modeling is good (I saw some shortcuts on some of them, but its very good); Animation is a mixed bag. Some of its great some silly, some seems limited by the engine, but on the whole... it all looks "plast-icky", and with a bit of the uncanny valley in a bad way.

 

I really want to pass on this one, but its supposed to use Havok behaviors, and the toolset might be really good, so I may get it (next year) despite not really liking the look of it.

Me? Its funny but I'm never (usually) picky about graphics; I'll play Alley Cat, Neuromancer, and Ranxerox... but for some reason Skyrim's graphics look ... ... fake, and I don't know why... Maybe its due to additional use (perhaps overuse) of shaders this time around. I dunno, but I find it distracting and somehow oddly abrading. shrug-1.gif

 

** Did anyone here play Riven, then Exile; and couldn't stand Exile?

It looks great to me, and unlike Twitcher 2 I'll be able to run it on my 4-year-old computer with a decent framerates.

If we look to Oblivion, there was little to "immerse" you or whatever into the game besides its good looks and rendition of the gameworld. There is little in the way of good RPG-mechanics that I look for in a Bethesda game anymore, the visuals are becoming increasingly the main focal point of their games. Just look at the way they present the videos where the player slooowly pans the camera around as if saying "come, look how beautiful it is". Writing your path in the stars, and rendering the map like that and so and so forth. It's practically designed to "dazzle". Except I don't think it works as well as it did when Oblivion was coming out.

 

If the game can be prove me wrong about the mechanics and all that, I'll be one happy camper.

Is it just me or is the camera in third person view still 100% strictly fixed behind your character? I always hated it that the camera view wasn't panning a bit when looking left or right. It just doesn't feel "free" to me, but stiff and ugly... and they are doing this since Morrowind.

Oblivion looked pretty good (except faces!) for the time. Didn't make the game any better though, still one of the worst rpgs ever released.

 

Personally, I don't see any point in paying much attention to the graphics. As long as they do the job, its good enough. If they look good, its just a nice bonus.

 

And besides that, Skyrim does look good. Can't see much point in nit-picking it graphically.

Keep in mind, that the Oblivion pr screenshots had been pimped up. Also the LOD in the distance is very ugly, wonder if that will be the case in Skyrim as well.

 

So.. until I don't see Skyrim in motion on my own, I am not believing anything.

IMO the modeling is great, but [parts of] the game look like its all made from "painted Styrofoam".

(And the menu UI is almost as bad as Witcher 2.)

To me it looks even worse. Not "by a long shot", but worse nonetheless.

PC version is going to have different UI, but knowing beth it's still going to need modding.

 

The game looks good to me, I enjoyed Oblivion with mods well enough so I see no reason why I wouldn't like this one too. Not a day one buy for me, but definitely will keep my eyes on it.

Well, as I expected that didn't look very good. The only thing that I liked was the ability to dual wield weapons and magic. The one thing I didn't expect was the UI being worse than Oblivion's.

 

I'm betting this will just be a shallower Oblivion.

It looked like Fallout:NV with snow and green plants. More importantly, they've added better animations to people walking around town and doing various things. Fur/hair still looks fake, but that's minor. I'd say the only thing that really bothered me is that it felt a bit shiny in places.

 

It seems as though they're not bothering with major/minor skills and letting you level up however you desire. That's an improvement. Depending on how they handle attribute increases, a lot of the annoyance I had with Oblivion's leveling would be fixed.

I see little problem with the graphics, by far the best looking RPG on consoles IMO.

 

I wasn't impressed with the melee combat though, looked almost identical to Oblivion except dual-wielding and kill animations.

Unless I'm mistaken attribute increases have been dropped from the game. Your attributes don't change, only your skills. A huge improvement on the completely broken and unbalanced leveling system of MW and OB, imo.
