The Blockbuster Oscar Bait Movie Thread

Aww, Viy's not bad (although it is done with a unique approach to pace and storytelling).

I find a lot of Italian films work better if you think of them as working under dream logic.  I know BLACK SUNDAY has a pretty solid reputation.  I'd probably go with Bava's SHOCK or LISA AND THE DEVIL as better films, but its been years since I've seen any of them.

"dream logic"

That reminds me of how a RedLetterMedia video said more or less the same thing about Suspiria (1977), which I also thought was extraordinarily painful. I think I might start avoiding any movies where anybody even remotely implies it being "dream-like". Seemingly not to my taste.

A lot of Italian horror films in my experience (and some of their other genre films) just don't really make sense. I love some of Fulci's films (the Gates of Hell trilogy particularly - CITY OF THE DEAD, THE BEYOND, THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETARY) but don't ask me what they meant or why things happened and in some instances what actually happened.

I've learned I have a more enjoyable time if I just roll with what they offer.

Sexist and racist. Should have been a black woman. White trash shouldn't be allowed in movies. PERIOD.

Am I the only one that is just expecting them to lay a rotten egg with the new Star Wars movie? Maybe GoT Season 8 has soured my faith.

There's also the fact that Last Jedi didn't leave any hooks to look forward to. Ep 7 built stuff up, but Ep 8 tore it all down. There's very little "wow, I wonder what..." to get excited about.

Well, they DID give away who Rey was in the last Jedi. And one line from the trailer of this one confirmed it. To  me at least.

Spoiler

She is a clone

Which line does that ?  Memory of TLJ is shot.

Reading some supposed leaks and I have to say they are pretty funny -

Spoiler

Best part is supposdly Star Destroyers with Death Star superlasers on them.  So now we have many planet killers rather than something properly grandiose like a star system killer

I expect the new Star Wars will be an entertaining adventure that I will enjoy taking my daughter too, just like we have done for all the new movies. 👍

The vision she had in the dark side cave in TLJ. The line from the trailer for TRS "People tell me they know me. They don't". Plus one comment from Mazz.

Just my opinion. I might be wrong. It is a theory that fits the facts though.

Even if it is crap (and I've enjoyed every Star Wars to some extent), its not like it's the end of life as we know it.  Its just a movie.

Oh no argument from me there. I won't even see it until it comes out on Amazon. We're talking next summer here most likely. I actually liked what they did in TLJ though. Luke Skywalker, the hero who was going to save the galaxy grew up to be an embittered man, living alone, and brooding on his failures. A man who did not become the person he thought he would be. Mister, now THERE is a character I can identify with!

I didn't hate TLJ.  It went a bit overboard with trying to subvert expectations, IMO, but given the complaints that TFA was a retread...well... 🤔

I still think TLJ could have been good or better if it wasn't the middle entry of the third and final trilogy of the saga. It's why I'm willing to give Johnson's first stand alone film a shot, if it still happens, even though I thought TLJ failed spectacularly.

Just got back from Joker, really enjoyed it.

I won't spoil any specific plot, just give my take away of what it accomplished. Don't read if you plan to watch it.

Spoiler

The film respectful captures a believable human being whose circumstances leads them to embodying a figure with all the recognizable and complex features that we've come to know as the Joker. Further it does so effortlessly, without forcing contrived leaps of logic upon the viewer. By the end, the sense of self you imagine the Joker having would successful extrapolate out to all the stories of the Joker that we know and love, but had always lacked a grounded animus for. It accomplishes something beyond even this though, all this rich and thoughtful backstory culminates in the birth of the greater character of Gotham, and it all happens in the background. I have to use the word respectful and effortlessly again, because I think that best describes how the film treated both depictions of human beings as well as the franchise.

Dolemite was amazing. Absence clearly makes the heart grow fonder, because Eddie Murphy had my grinning ear to ear the whole time. He was just fantastic. I don't want to say more, just watch it. Don't even look into the story, just go watch it and read about it after.

Episode 8's biggest problem for me was that everything that wasn't about Luke/Rey/Kylo just felt so uninteresting in comparison.

The pilot's "rebellion" against the pink hair lady, and the Casino planet subplot should both have been reworked a lot to make it more appealing. The lesson the pilot had to learn was...blind trust in his leaders? The Casino planet plot could've been a lot more fun if maybe a big name or two from the First Order were there, maybe even Snoke, since it was supposed to be a planet for the "ultra rich".

I didn't mind Luke's story too much, but I was dissapointed that the writers weren't bold enough to have Rey and Kylo partner up as leaders of the First Order. It could've been easily explained by both Rey's attraction to Kylo, as well as her using the opportunity to steer him and the First Order towards good. Then of course you could have her fall to the Dark Side later if they wanted. Things always came easy for Rey, so the frustrations from not managing to bring "peace" to the galaxy could steer her towards the dark side.

while we ain't a filmmaker, we can't help but believe trying to restart a trilogy with the second installment is gonna be awkward. worse, 'cause johnson ain't doing third installment, am suspecting much o' what he did is gonna be abandoned. military-industrial complex as the genuine big-bad? is now gonna be second installment insular and no doubt more clumsy in retrospect.

tlj problems were, we suspect, in large part 'cause johnson were trying to plug holes left by narrative o' first movie while simultaneous attempting to give himself a fresh start. his efforts were, at best, inelegant.

am not optimistic 'bout the final film given our feelings 'bout abrams. scorsese criticism 'bout marvel films appears more appropriate for abrams, a director who cares little for narrative coherence and instead focuses 'pon generating roller-coaster ride visuals and events to keep the viewer distracted and awed. am suspecting final star wars film in the current trilogy will be brain-freeze stoopid, but will keep most audiences entertained enough so that they overlook flaws.

HA! Good Fun!

Scorcese's criticism rubs me the wrong way, because I used to think the man was a genius until I watched Wolf of Wall Street and something clicked and I realized all of his movies are shallow escapism for terrible people. Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Gangs of New York. It's always about how hard it is to be a good person and people who just can't seem to help themselves to be the worst.

It's just wish fulfillment. He makes wish fulfillment for people who wish they could abuse others instead of people who want to be a hero. He makes technically very well done escapism with great pacing and lots of cool montages, but it's just escapism nonetheless. Just about darker stuff, which makes people think it has more weight, because negativity is always overvalued compared to positivity.
