In the d20 ruleset it's different and a direct saber (or any other weapon by that matter) hit can actually kill you rather easily since there's a distinction between your actual health and, as somebody pointed before, your expertise to avoid grievous harm. It's one of the things that don't quite work as well as it should due to the changes implemented in the ruleset to adapt it for a console/PC game.

Some people went away, some people formed a new community. New people came, too. Nothing lasts forever, that's the way things are. Tell you what, I don't even know why I bother. In the end, no matter how much you or I argue, the decision has probably been made already. Perhaps the announcement was just to avoid what happened with the NWN2 boards. At least this way we won't be able to complain that the boards were gone overnight.

No, if by community you understand the same user database these boards have right now, then obviously the community will not stick together. However, if we follow your reasoning, any single user that left the community at a given moment would be disrupting the community, since the membership has changed. That, as you can see, is absurd.
