  1. Roleplay mostly. Very promising. Then classes and story.
  2. I suppose Voss has mistaken New Vegas with Far Cry maybe? Or hasn't played it? Makes no other sense.
  3. I'm not playing the beta, but since I'm playing IWD enhanced right now, let me pop in and say my part. Doesen't matter much 7 days before launch anyway. Combat in IWD is a huge pile of Kri-kri turds, for 2015 standards. I like the engagement mechanic as an idea and as I've seen it in action in videos (about the slow recovery wile moving I'm not that sure though) and if it is to be removed, a threat mechanic should be introduced so you can pin opponents one way or another. Having to chase them around and have your weakling party members run around like idiots is sooooooo frustrating and stoooooooopid. Reminded me of chasing games we played as kids. I was engaged in a battle last night and I couldn't believe the stupidity of the combat philosophy of IWD (and all other IE game obviously). I don't see where people find tactics in those games. It's mostly select all -> attack target, unless you come across a more powerful group then you do what I described above. Damn!
  4. Um.... New Vegas is an open world FPS with very limited RPG elements. It is a completely different genre. Myself I started with PnP RPGs and eventually these new fangled computer thingies started having games on them, including dungeon exploration games like Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord. It was interesting to see how things changed over time and eventually story and plot took center stage over combat, and then both were abandoned entirely for semi-interactive movies. It will be interesting to see if the genre can be revived from its long death. New Vegas is the epitome of rpg in a video game form. Not only it is heavy on roleplay it's full of rpg elements. Presentation (open world FPS) is irrelevent weather agame is an rpg or not, since it's a video game and there is no default way to present things (like in pnp is always people around a table).
  5. All answers to known lore can be found here. http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Pillars_of_Eternity_Wiki
  6. The Free Palatinate of Dyrwood is an independent state that is ruled by an elected monarch.
  7. I discovered what an rpg truly is when I played Baldur's Gate 2 and then Fallout 2. I was familiar with dungeon delving, fantasy settings and other computer and board games with rpg elements such as stats, dialogue line picks etc before I play those 2 games, but not with a roleplay experience, like making dialogue choices ans stats/skills that reflect your character and have consequences etc. EDIT: Although my experience with tabletop and video games start at mid 80's, I only start looking into the crpg genre more thoroughly after I played Fallout: New Vegas (best crpg I've ever played so far - waiting for Pillars to put it second) and even more when the old-school crpg kickstarter frenzy begun about 2 years ago. Until then I never knew or care about who made which game; I just played rpgs and liked them or not. Pillars got me so much excited because of the nostalgia, I guess. Having the IE games experience carved in my mind so hard couldn't resist This is the only video game (or any, now that I think of it) forum that I've ever participated into (that says a lot about my excitement for the game!) and, to be honest I started to get a bit tired (yet the excitement of the release pulls me back into it) I guess I'll go back to loosen up a bit with radaring and following video games. Sometimes I think "man, you never did this when you were in your 20's, now in your mid 30's spending so much energy on video games trivia? wtf?". I'll see...
  8. Since the topic is moved (or is it just a parenthesis?) from how bad or not it is to stray from DnD, to strange names, Here's a link for those to seek inspiration for names, strange or not. http://www.rinkworks.com/namegen/
  9. I looooooooooove how easily threads go off-off-off-topic. Epsecially now that the game is one week away from release and there is no need for "serious" debating. So entertaining hahaha!
  10. Lol those names... Anyway, names are names, not a big deal (I suppose if you hear my name many will think it's strange too). Going away from DnD only good things can bring DnD settings and lores are nice if you want to go adventuring, slay monsters, fight bad wizards etc. You know, not very heavy stuff but super fun. If you want to go deeper, thoug, make more complex things you have to stray away even if you're using DnD material; you have to strongly bend them. So why not make something new? It's worth the effort if only just to move away from that awful childish allignment system of DnD!
  11. I'm mixed about this, but it's not that big of a problem. I could do with or without it.
  12. Oh, right! I forgot about the original BG cinematics. Maybe because I only played it a bit many years later. I only remeber the sketch-like intro of BG2 Way better than this one btw. I really hope Pillars' is nothing similar :D
  13. Wow! So we gotta see movies? I'm curious. I'd expect something close to the BG ones, some moving sketches or something. Am I close, Sensuki? Did u see them actually or just the files? Damn, I'm intrigued for some reason
  14. No cinematics (maybe an intro?) most probably, just cut-scenes in forms of a picture with a scrolling text, an in-engine animation or sketched scripted interactions.
  15. In both Europe and Asia, in the middle ages, there was always a supreme ruler over an extensive territory, with smaller rulers in his domain that were loyal to him (through law if they were appointed by him or through word if they were more independent). Below them were the common people and maybe, in cases, some local rulers like mayors, chiefs etc but they were not royalty. What the nobles were called doesen't matter; their function was the same. What I wanted to say to the OP, is that the names of the nobles in Pillars have similarities with real world middle ages european noble titles, but there is no need to know who is over whom, because, unless they are a king or an emperor or whatever a supreme ruler is called in Pillars, they are of equal "rank". So no need to learn those title by heart
  16. I don't believe social hierarchy in the middle ages was that different in Europe than in Asia tbh. Usually a noble had a title which differed depending on where in Europe he was, that doesen't mean much other than he has a rulership over an area. Usually only a king or an emperor was higher to the rest of the nobility to the point that they pledged loyalty to him. Loyalties shifted, of course, when different rulers fought over a crown. So, the feudal systems were mostly based on words and vows while empires were more stable with a more centralised authority. These in general.
  17. Speak for yourself. I know plenty of people who play pnp rpgs with friends and video games alone at home. No. Videogames are made for people who want to play videogames, solo or multi. Videogames and tabletop games are 2 completely different things.
  18. When a game is designed from the satrt to be single and single player only, I do believe is very difficult to implement multi player in the expansion. Especially when the expansion's gonna be extra content to the core game and not a continuation of the story. Maybe in a sequel in about 3-4 years? Who knows?
  19. I never saw what bardish was about DnD games bards, apart that they got some musical instruments. They were just spellcasters as the rest spellcasters. Chanters look much more like bards with their chants and their music staves... Brilliant.
  20. If you like similar games, I believe you won't be dissapointed. This looks like THE rpg so far.
  21. ME 1: Garrus, Wrex, Ashley, Tali ME 2: Garrus, Thane, Tali ME 3: Garrus, Tali, Ashley I loved most of the companions honestly, but my least favorites are by far Jacob and Vega (stereotypical and uninspired). Garrus is my bro, calibratin' all day 'er day. Wow!... I'd never guess you liked Garrus that much (joking )
  22. Well, exploration is supposed to help you achieve your critical path more easily, is it not? Why explore after all, roleplay-wise? Because you have nothing better to do? No, you have to accomplish a task; you're forced in a situation you have to make it through it to the end. But you must be prepared, thus going adventuring and becoming more powerful so you can accomplish your basic goal more easily. I thought this is normal. If the critical path is impossible without exploration, it'll make exploration mandatory, which makes exploration not being exploration at the end. I believe the game will be tough if you go straight to the crit path and challenging to a bit easy depending of the extension of your exploration.
  23. Ahahaha! I've forgotten about those NWN portraits. Are these adventurers or Sword Coast celebrities posing for covers of the Sword Coast weekly gossip magazine? :D
  24. Sorry for jumping in and going off-topic but I *LOVE* the word "armour" instead of "armor"! That's is. Carry on. Don't mind me
  25. D&D is there for everyone to delve into. Let's do something new, shall we? (I mean let the devs do something new )
