Balancing Stealth vs Combat
jivex5k replied to PrimeJunta's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
If combat is fun I know I won't avoid it to save time and resources, I will look for it. Stealthing or avoiding fights could also require time and resources. Besides, what about the loot from the enemies? -

Essentially this whole combat xp argument can be boiled down to this: Do you feel the victory in combat is enough reward in itself? -
Degenerate Gameplay
jivex5k replied to UpgrayeDD's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
*Concision edit* Quite the contrary. Logic dictates what is wrong. If you design a program intended to produce the correct mathematical answer to the problem "2+2=", and it produces 4, then it is right. Anything else would be wrong. However, if you design a program to produce the number that is 1 more than the answer to "2+2=", then "4" as a result would be wrong. i.e., right and wrong are determined by contextual factors. If there was no wrong way to play a game, then literally any action you took would be a correct way to play the game. Eating a sandwich with your computer not even powered on would be a correct way to play the game, just because you decided it was. Either something dictates what's correct and what isn't, or nothing does. You can't have both or neither. LOL That was good, brightened my day. And who says eating a sandwich with the screen off is the wrong way to play the game? It's my way of playing it, and it feels right. If I get more joy out of playing it that way then I couldn't care less if someone else thinks it's wrong. Some of my best memories are playing Mario Kart 64 with the screen off and a subway bacon and ranch sub. Honestly you guys should be more open minded about no combat xp. It's not going to ruin the game. -
Degenerate Gameplay
jivex5k replied to UpgrayeDD's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
How is degenerate gameplay even a thing? You can't play a game the wrong way. It's a game, enjoy it! No one wants this game to be a tedious affair, and they won't design it like that. No XP for combat? Who cares if the combat is fun. I am a person who would do side quests with no reward if it had an interesting story or gameplay. I don't need that extra validation if the game is satisfying on it's own. Now if the combat in this game ends up sucking...well the game won't be that great. But it's all speculation really, I trust Obsidian to make it fun and tactical. If they don't oh well, it's the risk I took. -

Ultima Online had awesome treasure chests like this. In fact it had an awesome treasure hunting system overall.

I'm all for some light hearted stuff that doesn't truly affect the player. Kind of like orcs getting annoyed at you for clicking on them repeatedly. Doesn't hurt anyone, just a funny little extra bit goes a long way.- 22 replies

YES! I'd love to be a necromancer command a small party of undead. Say up to 10 skeletons, or 5 more powerful skeletons lol, or something much more creative than I can think of. And limiting the number based on skill is a great idea.

Level scaling and its misuse
jivex5k replied to Hormalakh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
What the heck is degenerate gaming? -
Honestly, I don't see what this would add to the game. I mean, unless the mule is following you around while you adventure why would you be able to drop stuff in the stash. This is how I imagine the stash: It's buried under all your other crap in your backpack, so accessing it while running around outside of a safe area is going to take a lot of time, and you have a large chance of being "caught with your pants down" so to speak. Then, when your in a safe area, you have the time to access these stashed items. The mule doesn't really fit in, unless he follows you around everywhere, and then you'd have stuff on the top of the mules pack that would be easy to access. If you have a mule only sitting at camps I don't know how he would get to one camp to another without following you there. And having a mule following you everywhere, that would be cool if it's optional and he could die. I'm just not into the digging this magical mule that is somehow at every campsite even though he doesn't follow you there.

Level scaling and its misuse
jivex5k replied to Hormalakh's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Very simple. It's not "having fun playing in your own way." It's playing in a way that's not fun only because the game system rewards you for playing that way. That's the problem with all degenerate mechanics, whether we're talking savegame abuse, grinding, farming, or whatever. A well-designed game should not reward such gameplay. An exploitable level scaling mechanic that makes the game easier by avoiding becoming more powerful is a variant of this. It rewards degenerate gaming. Therefore it should be avoided. It would be doubly Not Fun in a game like P:E where you get all or most of your experience by completing things rather than killing things, since it would reward people for avoiding content. All it would do is make speed runs easier. This would be Not Fun, because in order to be Fun, a speed run has to be a special challenge, not the easiest way to play a game. But....you don't have to play that way if you don't like it. No one wants the game to be super easy, except the people who will play it on super easy mode. For the rest of us there will be a lot of difficulty options it seems. Anyways... I think I know where your coming from. I'm a bit disappointed to see the story will have level scaling, I always enjoyed not being able to kill a certain boss without going out of my way to explore and gain more experience first. The Butcher comes to mind, he would utterly destroy you, and that was truly awesome. But I can see why they would do it so other players who don't like things that hard can just focus on the story. Hopefully we can turn off level scaling for the story and get some truly terrifying enemies.
