Journal Entries
jivex5k replied to Badmojo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Journals are tricky. They can easily become cluttered and overloaded with information. I wish I could say more than that, but honestly I've yet to experience a journal system that seemed elegant. -
Personally, I'd like to avoid a loading screen when entering a building. I'd prefer the roof to just become transparent, this worked great for Ultima Online. Then the whole realistic size thing is automatically correct. They key to avoiding unseen or blocked areas is transparency.

Full Looting
jivex5k replied to Felithvian's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
What are you waiting for? http://www.uosecondage.com/ ah I was wondering what shard you were playing on. I really liked that shard except for the mounts. Mounts were never meant for hi speed internet....I digress. But, an MMORPG, even one as great as UO (in it's beginnings), shouldn't be emulated in all aspects for this project. I think it would get tedious seeing every piece of mundane gear on NPCs, but now that I think about it more it really would come down to the looting system. If they could separate the garbage from the stuff you'd actually want I could see that working. And there is some merit to killing someone, and wearing their clothes as a disguise, so it could work in certain situations. The key would be to avoid cluttering the loot boxes. -
Self-insert characters
jivex5k replied to mcmanusaur's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
And here I thought this thread would be about importing your own character portrait. I hope I can do that! I usually import this picture: It's pretty close to my self image. -
Some of you guys just can't get past it huh... Some of you people raise your hackles immediately at any semblance of modern aspects to this PE.... Take a step back....breathe....relax. We all backed this project based on the pitch, I don't want to change the core of anything. In fact, I'm not even asking for change at all. I was merely asking if any of you guys felt fatigue in playing decade old games now....cuz I have. And I'm hoping the updated graphics, a better UI, and the experience under obsidian's belt will stop some of the tedium. If I wanted a game like skyrim or fallout, guess what, I already have them..... Obviously I'm looking for an oldschool feeling game...just one that's not so freaking tedious. For example: Get rid of the rest abuse (which the dev team themselves mentioned), make it look nice, update the UI, come up with some fresh monsters and environments... I'm not saying turn this game into a diablo/skyrim hybrid with fast paced action and hotkey combos. nobody wants that or they wouldn't have backed this game. We all want an oldschool crpg, with an engaging story, tactical combat, and an entire party to control. So those of you who are saying play COD or LOL or this game isn't for me, your wrong, I know what kind of game I backed. The last thing I want to see is them abandon the entire backbone of this project. Now maybe you guys can understand what I mean, I guess I should have expected this backlash due to the wording of my OP. Oh and guess what: I play Black Ops 2, Far Cry 3, Skyrim, Fallout, Borderlands 2, Deus Ex, X Com, Dishonored, Modern Warfare 3, The Witcher 2, Dark Souls, SSX, Tiger Woods, Soul Calibur, Street Fighter all on the xbox 360. Hell, I even played Rock Band last weekend with friends. Guess what else: None of that matters, I can play those and still enjoy titles like Endless Space, Legends of Pegasus, and Civilization on the PC.

played Skyrim for 80 hours... can't make it out of the crematorium in Planescape: Torment. *smashes face into desk* You, sir, perfectly define the spirit of everything that has gone wrong with the modern gamer. Wow...sorry that viewpoints that aren't yours are deemed what's wrong with gamers. There's no need for personal attacks, I didn't realize there was a correct way to be a gamer. I could make a snide comment here, but I'm gonna refrain. If you don't agree with my post or my viewpoints, why not explain why instead of attacking me?

Dream why are you still talking about that? Your derailing this thread more than it already has been. Lets get it back on track!

I just played Far Cry 3 for a little bit today. I haven't played much, but it's extremely fun! Hell man, you can skin bull sharks! And there are RPG like skill trees, been going stealthy it's a lot of fun and nets more XP...but sometimes you just gotta blast a jeep full of pirates with an Rocket lol. And it's incredibly open....with a large variety of wildlife. Haven't had this much fun playing a game since XCom

Well I read another thread here about BG1 that got me thinking. I recently bought BGEE, and I must say it's very very tedious. I've never played BG1 at all, only BG2, but I played the hell out of BG2.... Now I can't even put in more than 20 minutes before I'm bored of the game...I must be getting old or something. I even bought PST to try it out....again it's the same deal. I gave up after 2 days and I couldn't find my way out of that damn dungeon or whatever the starting area is. I'm wondering though, is it because they are so dated at this point? Is it the UI that's pushing me away? Has my attention span decreased so much that I can't sit through these types of games anymore? I dunno, I was pretty into Skyrim for a while, logged over 80 hours on that game. I tried getting into Fallout New Vegas....just got bored of it after an hour or two. I think Skyrim managed to engage me somehow more than these other games, I felt like a kid exploring a new lush world. I find myself playing League of Legends more than anything these days....it's just very deep and there is always more strategy to learn.....I digress Have any of you experienced this fatigue? Can you sit through the old CRPGs still? I'm hoping with PE the updated UI, all the experience of previous world/story building, and the fact of a new world is enough to keep me invested in the game. I just want to feel that connection again, you know?

Look at it this way: We don't want bland, politically correct cultures in this game, it's boring, and seems very artificial. This game isn't going to be about sending a message in regards to the real world. In fact, it has nothing to do with the real world. (Aside from using the real world as a firm base of world creation) So there is no reason to get bent out of shape over suggestions of having cultures that may not be politically correct. It's a fictional world they are creating, and how unbelievable would it be if there were no inequalities in the cultures, and everyone treats everyone exactly the same. That reeks of "trying to stay PC and not step on toes", and it's detrimental to the world they are creating. If you are offended by a fictional culture in a video game then you need to take a step back and realize what it is your offended by. None of it actually exists, they are characters in a made up world. It's not about including rape, sexism, racism, or anything like that for the sake of being mature and edgy, or to appeal to some creeps. It's about creating a believable world. And a believable world will have cultures and characters that view others as lesser than them. A believable world will have crime and extremely unsavory characters. It will have inequalities of rich and poor. It will have people who are cowards, people who are brave. And yes, it will have people who are sexist. These people exist today, and throughout the history of mankind itself, to avoid it completely would make the whole world seem alien and arbitrary. In essence, we wouldn't feel as connected to the world, and that's pretty damn important on my list. Let's keep the topic to why PE should or should not include sexism. The real world examples serve no purpose other than arguments about the real world. There's no reason to cite specific examples of real world cultures exhibiting sexist behavior...we already know this exists, the question is should we include sexism in PE.

Off topic but I love your AV.

Lets toss rape in there as well because, you know, it's realistic. Seriously I hope there is raping in this game. It's realistic and shows the devs trust us to handle mature subject matter. What we don't want is rape where it doesn't fit, or **** thrown in for the sheer aspect of seeming mature. Don't water down this game, but don't make extreme subject matter where it doesn't belong. I want this game to be as mature as Game of Thrones...The books not the show. Life was freaking hard back then, gritty and dangerous, filthy and unapologetic. But that's not all it was, there are moments of kindness and beauty throughout. You can't dismiss rape and other aspects of hardship simply because you argue the game doesn't need to be realistic. Realism in RPGs, when it comes to the world and environment and people who inhabit it, it's paramount. It's not as important when you talk about game-play systems, as fun should be the primary concern in this respect.

Secret Fighting Styles
jivex5k replied to Neuralshock's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Secret abilities are a great idea. Hidden ancient spells and techniques for crafting and fighting, it's all gravy to me. In regards to the specific suggestions the OP made, I think you got some backlash due to the anti-monk martial arts guys. But your general idea is good, there should absolutely be hidden abilities and spells to uncover via quests or just random exploration. I'd love to see an entirely hidden school of magic, might be a little played out like the blood magic in DA:O but I'd love to see necromancy as a forbidden school...I think they mentioned something about it already anyways. But why should it be limited to spell casters, I'd love to find secret barbarian tactics, maybe you find some legendary barbarian warlord who knows techniques like no other, appealing to the soul of war. A ranger could find a forest god who imbues him with ancient techniques. A paladin might find ancient texts.....you get the picture.- 39 replies

There should be sexism when appropriate to that culture's history. That goes for racism too. Cultures all have their own behavior and expectations of their people, I want to see different cultures in this game. And it should absolutely change the way they act towards your character. If your rolling a female who comes in contact with a barbaric type culture where females are held in lower respect, I better have some males in my party to get some respect. If it's a society where woman rule the government and men are viewed as low brow food providers, I better have a female in my party to get some respect. What I don't want to see are a bunch of bland cultures with views that remain PC in our real world to play it safe. They pitched this as a mature game, I expect the cultures to be defined in a mature perspective. Seems like we all share the same expectation in this regard. I think Obsidian is aware that we don't want a sugar coated PC world to inhabit.

UO had torches and it was pretty damn cool. And UO is isometric. They also have a spell to see in the dark.... Mid fight, when your spell runs out and all of a sudden you can't see anything, it made for some really tense moments.

Full Looting
jivex5k replied to Felithvian's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
This game is single player though, how many NPC shirts do you want? It would get annoying IMHO to scroll through a list of crap I don't want each time. And taking everything from someone in UO is a major **** move. Do you really need that dudes doublet? -
Didn't know those forums existed. Just wanted to share my joy of a new game.

I'd love a creation system this deep. And having the world react accordingly to your appearance is a big plus as well. It seems incredibly complex, but I hope PE can at least take some of your ideas and implement them.

Identifying found items
jivex5k replied to Piccolo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Good points, Allow us to equip unidentified objects, and please have cursed objects. But cursed objects should be able to be removed, some easily, some by finding a specialiezd npc, and some should take the form of a quest. If you go to the cursed item remover dude and he's like....uhhh yeah I can't get this thing off but I've heard there are old texts up in this crypt that describe this item. Begin 20 hour quest. -

Identifying found items
jivex5k replied to Piccolo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Bam! You hit the nail on the head man. Identifying items has a sense of wonder and excitement...not unlike opening a present. But if every +1 item is unidentified it becomes a chore instead of a pleasure. -
