Nihilism and Atheism
Gyor replied to Cultist's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Then that brings up the question of what exactly is a "god". Is a normal person who amasses absurd amounts of power a god? About Gann - maybe you are right, I haven't played MotB in a while and I might be misremembering. You want to know what a God is? Its a title. At the end of the day a God is a title that is confered upon a being by those that worship it. Many cultures define the term in so many ways to describe so many different beings with such divergent natures that no other trait is as unversally appliable as the one I have provided. The only universal trait across all religions and spiritualities, the common denominator is the worshippers themselves and thier act of confering the title of God/dess. Although in game it appears that while the existance of the Gods is taken for granted, what they are is not, aka are they Gods or powerful beings. -
Some want wizard towers and temples in thier strongholds, you want Casinos and Brothels. Awesome :D Honestly I want the stronghold to be strange and unique. What the game play of Crossroads Keep was better and awesome, the flavour of the Wizards Tower/Sphere in BG2 was freaking awesome. It should be more then a generic medevil keep. That why I suggested Ob Nau's keep, but there are other ideas awesome ideas as well. Maybe's a mobile fortress, like a space station only for the Ocean instead of space. Or maybe its made from Crystals or Living wood. Or its carved into a Vulcano, with a room for Sharks with freaking laser beams. I also suggest they look at a veriety of late medevil palaces and Castles for ideas it should be beautiful and magnifiant. And if they're going to have a temple in the Keep it should be devoted to the Character's God, not to a bunch Lathanderites. I allows thought that made no sense, its like the Catholic church building a keep and deciding it should have a Mosque or Hindu Temple in it instead of a Christian Chapel, it makes no sense.

Nihilism and Atheism
Gyor replied to Cultist's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
A realistic inspiration for Atheism in the game would the Hindu Philosphy school of Samkhya. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samkhya And yes unlike other forms of Hinduism Samkhya is Atheist, at least originally, although they believed in the soul, they did not believe in "God" and made arguements against the idea. They still believe in the Vedas. As I've said before Hinduism makes for a much better source if philosphical ideas in PE then traditional midevil Christian ones and in,fact so far PE's religion resembles Hinduism far more then Christianity, but with European influences and technology and architecture. Think about it, reincarnation did not appear in Christianity, Christianity did not have more then one diety. St. Waiden sounds more like,a European Krishna then a Jesus (Avatar vs. Son,of God type deal) to Eothos' Vishnu. I also think Kabblah influences would fit as well. -
Kabbalah and its concept of reincarnation gilgul? would be a great souce of ideas as well. Here's the wikipedia article on the soul. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul#Socrates_and_Plato My personal belief is that a person's individual soul is a reflection of the soul of the higher self or higher soul and that a higher soul can create or extend as many of these individual souls as it needs too, which remain connected to the higher soul, like branches on a tree sort of. The individual soul exists both in the body and as a part of the Higher Soul, but the higher soul exists seperate from the body. I also believe that the Gods too have a higher soul and that they too have individual souls like humans, the individual souls are what humans interact with during spiritual experiences, the higher souls of Gods (or spirits if you prefer) aren't accessible to humans. Just a personal belief, not nessarily particular Wiccan I guess, but still its my personal understanding of it. I also believe that the nature if existance including souls is at the foundmental level information and imagination, information being imagination in a static state and imagination being information in a state of transformation. Information inspires imagination and imagination creates new information in a cycle.

I'd add that the Egyptians had a different view of souls then the Greeks, they believed the soul had five parts, the Ka, the Ba, the Shuet, the Ib, and the Ren. The Canela tribe in South America believe when you die you become a ghost and when that ghost dies your reborn as a large animal and when that one dies, your reborn as a smaller animal, then an even smaller animal and so on it your like a fly and when that dies oblivion. Some Northern Europeans peoples believed a part of your soul could manifest as an animal.

This World Needs Gods
Gyor replied to Pipyui's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I don't think races will have racial deities, although they maybe myths about what, deity created which race which differ in different regions or different religions. Maybe both Eothos and Magran faiths claim to have created Elves. They need to continue to create unique Gods like Magran, Berath, and Eothos. Maybe a God of the Sea and prosperity. A Goddess of Ciphers. Goddesses of Planetary/Astrology. Dieties with a duality to them. Deity of Alchemy. Deity of vice. -
It might be that if this kind of topics don't get opened, the Anti-WhiteKnight faction would die out of boredom. Edit: wait, was "goddess" a subtle form of sarcasm over the argument of this thread, or were you just citing the famous manga Aa Megami-sama? Probably wiccan. Lapsed, but yes. Didn't stop believing in the Gods, just in myself. I'm ecletic, not traditional right now I'm focused on Baphomet (no I'm not a Satanist, although I do recognize that some Satanists worship Baphomet as well), as well as philosphical framework to help guide me ethically, spiritually, and in gaining a greater understanding of the universe. Anywho this thread isn't covering any new ground.

One way to handle this is that human traits are entirely dicated by subrace. In fact in DnD 5e stat bonus comes from subrace not race in none humans and this could something Eternity choices to do. Or repersent human will and tenacity, the human spirit by having a stamina bonus or stamina that regenerates faster. Its really hard to say because we don't know anything about what the other races get. We don't know about stat bonus or penalties or if they'll have any, what kind of traits they'll have, or how far Elve and,Dwarves will deviate from normal. So far a bonus to hearing in Elves and a bigger bonus to hearing for Orlan is a safe bet with thier big fur covered ears. Aumaua will probably get a bonus to sailing and strength or melee damage. Not sure about Dwarves now that mountains aren't the basic homeland for them. Longievity isn't as meaningful in game mechanic, its fluff. We don't even know if they have beards, Sagani doesn't. We know the Godlike have physical manifestations of divine imfluence, but nothing else.

Druids, Rangers, Aumaua, Godlike, and Orlans
Gyor replied to Gyor's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I hope they give thier own unique twist to all of them, Druids and Rangers with a twist. -
Don't forget that some souls are fractured which could twist a creature into a monster in some cases. Some exotic animals could instinctively tap thier souls for powers. Like a Wyven instinctively taps thier souls to breath fire, not conciously like a wizard.

Why does "mature" content have to be sooo depressing? Why does tragedty have to be the center piece? And why is sex for sex's sake or for humour immature? I don't believe there is such a thing as Gradudice Nudity or titillation. I mean nudity is never nessarary to the plot of a movie, I've never Rrrrrrwatched a movie only to say "I couldn't get plot until I saw her nipple, now it all makes scene and seeing her arse really completed her character arc". Nudity is for stimulation, everything else is just the rationizations and setting up the fantasy. Same with titillation. Maturity is one of the most abused and riduculous words in the english language. And why do people who search for maturity treat sex like a funeral? There should be funny stuff too not just sad, like your character has sex with a prostitute only for the sex to trigger memories from a past life in her, memories of being your grandma.

Religion
Gyor replied to Kane_Severance's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Oh I can see alot of real life people following a God like Bane, his basically just a divine dictator and RL mortal ones have plenty of followers. Bane promises rewards for service and attracts those that beleave might makes right. There's also the possiblity of reeducation camps and the like. Asmodeaous, The Archdevil God of Sin on the other hand is less believable. Give me your soul so I can torture you forever isn't believable. Although if one is convinced the devils are higher beings and service to Asmodeaus will after a short time of torture turn you into one then I can see some fools agreeing. -
It may also depend on who your a priest of that changes the spells and abilities you have access too. Maybe A Priest of Eothos is more Paladin like with smiting, while Magran priests are better with guns, and Berath's priests might favour necromancy and healing stamina.

We have for companions an Orlan Cipher decective, A human monk, a gun toting Priestess, a human fighter, a Dwarf ranger, an Elf Wizard. That leaves a Godlike ? and a Aumaua ?. One of those is likely a rogue as we don't have one yet and its one of the traditional core four. My guess Godlike Rogue, Aumaua Chanter, Paladin, or Druid. I'm dying to get more lore on the races.
