Generic fantasy setting?
TrashMan replied to Metabot's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Whenever I hear the word "generic" used in any kind of complaint, I immediately don't give a damn and start hating the poster who used it. That word lost all meaning because of such horrid abuse on the internet. If the complaining crowd is to be believed, everything is generic. I that such complainers. They want something "new" but dont' know what. Or kind themselves into thinking that their idea is fresh adn new and interesting. It is not. Let's replace elves with dragonkin. Wow, that makes the game so much better, no? NO. IT does not. If you think any race is truly original, think again. Which is why I'm going to campaign FOR as much genericness as possible. Because people complaining agaisnt "it" are getting on my neverves. MORE GENERICNESS (whatever that may be). -

I think we have a faliure to communicate here... Let me put it in far simpler terms - the female PC is not average? Neither is the male one. Neither are your other party members. -

You make a good point. buuuut.... Not to say your desires and prefferences are wrong, but pertty much every RPG out there is exactly as you described. What about variety? What about people who don't want to escape to a perfect world, but a different world? A world taht's similar to the real one, a world in whch they can immersive itself and see it it's entirety - good AND bad. When will they ever get their fix? According to you, never. -

TrashMan replied to DeDaL's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Ever heard "form follows function?". Social roles are not just a product of someone thinking "hey, this would be great". There's practical reasons behind it. Now I know some may think that the following will be chauvinistic/insulting. It is not. It's how things are. Physical prowes has no bearing on the individuals worth, so if anyone thinks I'm demeaning women or something, that is only because they place so much worth in physical attributes themselves. Do women think men are worth less because they aren't as good at multi-tasking? Do you hear us ever complaining about it? moving on... Let's take for example Delta Force. You have to be a prfect human speciment to get in. Recruits are usually taken from other special forces (whos tests are grueling as hell). And even then only 1 out of 10 pass. You heard me. Out of 100 special forces candidates only 10 pass. If you want some numbers (taken from the CRC data) Men have 40% higher upper body strength and roughly 20-30% higher lower body strength. During boot camp and regular training, women have shown to be twice as likely to sustain injuries (from training) because they have to strain themselves harder to keep it with the male counterparts. Most of those injuries are back injuries. And those are nothing to sneeze by, I assure you. You may think that physical strength or endurance don't have a big role in modern combat. But they do. If you have to run from cover to cover - speed matters. If you have to carry a wounded friend or lob grenades - strength matters. A lot. If you have to walk 70 miles across the desert in full comabt gear - everything matters. Women can be decent, even great soldiers, I said so before. But they are at a disadvantage and will remain so, no matter how hard they try and train. Becasue there will always be men who will train just as hard, and with their inborn advantage they will outperform a woman. -

Then that system doesn't really work at accurate representation because that's not how the real world works. It's as simple as that. -
Do you want well balanced companions?
TrashMan replied to Jarmo's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
An easily solved problem. Simply don't have giant rock/turd/whatever golems nad demons from hell as companions. If for balance sake you can't represeant a race/creature properly, then don't even bother puting it in. Now if oyu party is all made up of standard humanoid races - I really don't see a problem. There wont' be THAT much of a difference betwen two human fighters or two human assasins. There shouldn't be. This isn't Marvel where "peak human" means lifting several tons and surviving point-blank explosions.- 47 replies

In the last few discissions I noticed an irritatinbly high number of people who think that mages, once low on spells, are a total dead weight. Time to disprove such flawed notions. Lets for example take your average D&D spellcaster. Are spells his main thing? Yes. But that isn't the only thing he can do. The thing holding mack mages the most is their low amount of HP* and poeple not using them to their full potential *something I have campaigning for from day 1 is that health is determined by CON alone and class has no bearing on it. This would make mages far more survivable in combat as tehy could have as much HP as a fighter. One thing to decide when building a character (of any class) is what approach to take. - focus on maximizing it's strengths - focus on minimizing weakneses - balanced approach Now, msot peoepl I know go for the first. Got a fighter? All the equipment and skilsl will be there to make him even stronger and more durable! Got a mage? All equipment and skills/feats go to makeing him a stronger spellcaster. That is a valid aproach, but overspecialization is overrated. It works wonderfull as long as everything is going according to plan. But if it doesn't, if you loose that super-specialized tank - suddenly there's total chaos. *** "A great man once said that Specialization is for insects, Mr. Riley. I believed it at the time. I always thought that any human being, man or woman, should be able to do a solid day's work at any task you set them to. Hunt a buck or catch a fish, hammer a nail, build a fire, change the dressing on a wound — I always believed that you had to be ready to do anything to survive." *** Me? I prefer a more balanced approach. You loose a bit on the offensive side, but gain survivabiltiy and flexibility. I'm gonna give a few example from D&D that work. ToEE, Elven sorcerres Aquariliyane. Being an elf, she starts with weapon proficiency: longsword and has a dex bonus. So I give her 1 lvl of fighter and take Weapon Speacilization and Weapon Finesse (use DEX bonus for to-hit insted of STR). With spells like Blur and Mage Armor (this spell lasts the whole day) her AC is quite impressive (especially if you increase DEX even more or use bbracers of defense). Add Fire Shild, Gaseous form or similar if necessary, but for now let's discount spells, since we are talking about a depleted mage scenario (mage armor still applies tough). She was quite competent in combat. Enough so that she could take on lesser enemies by herself. Then we have Avernus. A human wizzard. He was worse in mele than her, but that's OK, because he had a different role to play. He had an enchanted repeating crossbow (in which he was given proficiency). With gloves of dexterity he was accurate enough with it (and it helped some of his tough spells and AC too). Most of all he was busy making scrolls and wands. When he was out of spells, he was far from useless. I used both of them in ToEE extensively, not backtracting or resting untill my entire party was tired. I cleared enitre dungeon levels without spells and wihout dying. *** What a mage can do even without spells: - make and use items like wands and scrolls (plenty of usefull wands are cheap enough to make and start with 20 charges). They might cost gold and EXP, but EXP can be gained back fast enough (especailly since those lagging behind the group get more) - ranged support - mele distraction/support Note that with combat manouvers being availlbe to every class, even a mage can get behind an enemy and attampt to trip him, or charge and knock him over. A character doesn't have to have to deal a huge amount of DPS to be usefull. A completely average character can turn the tide of battle with proper application.

a) No one is forcing you to go back. Mages arne't incompetent. Scrolls, Wands and WEAPONS. Yes, mages can use weapons. A shocking concept for some, I know. b) Why do you assume absolutely nothnig will happen inbetween? c) It's the same price to pay for many other game mechanics and tings. No biggie.- 661 replies

Proposed Inventory System
TrashMan replied to Hypevosa's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Having volume just be represented as a number... doesn't make much sense. It would work easily since it's just a another number but... there's no real value in adding it. When I said 'volume based' I meant Diablo style' date=' where you are playing inventory tetris. See this from Diablo 1. The sword takes 3 slots, the armour takes 6 slots, a potion takes 1 slot. What do you mean it doesn't make much sense? What do you think slots are other than representation of volume? If you have 20 slots and items take up a different number of slots, how is that different than having 20 volume and items taking up a different number of volume units? IT'S THE EXACT SAME THING...only without the tetris Your backpack has a limited volume. When volume is just a number you don't have to worry with tetris, because you KNOW you can fit X volume. Exactly how you arrange it doesn't matter. -
ARMA would want to disagree with you. Plate really wasn't that heavy, nor did it restrict mobility.

Does it have to be an amazing experience? It's just one of the thing you do because it's smart and part of the game. Half the thing poeple do in games isn't an "amazing" experience. Inventory managment? Clicking? Using potions? Waiting. How about walking back to the quest giver? That ain't an amazing experience...should we remove quests? Maek them auto-compelte wihout us having to bring back the request items/report back? Even in other types of games...let's take a FPS - what's the experience of hunting down a red keycard then backtracking to the red door? You could say there isn't one and why not deisgn FPS games as liner corridors, so players don't haev to go trough the same area twice. And yet this caused so much rage. Why do people play Sims? Not sure what to tell you. At the end of the day I want to have the experience of adventure. The experience of being inside the world. If half the stuff from the world is taken out, it's less of an immersive experience. To be able to tell the story as I play along. And part of that is gone if there isn't a story of a party of heroic adventures, reterning tired and wounded from exploring an ancient tomb, seeking the shleter of the inn or a safe camp. Looking to rest, mend their wounds and prepare for the challenge of tomorrows journey. There's so many things you cna do with a camp/inn. Not just pure resting. Many other things could happen there (cutscenes, conversations, easter eggs, jokes, mini-quests) or on the way to there (who said any road should every be perfectly safe? Just because I killed the badits doesn't mean the road will be safe forever). Heck, you could make the player EAGER to return back to camp/inn.- 661 replies

Gender Prejudice
TrashMan replied to DeDaL's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
But no woman is as strong as the strongest of men. This should be reflected in the game. Not necessarily because the strongest of men might be such an outlier that it doesn't make much sense to account for such a rarity in a system like say SPECIAL where strength is a number 1-10. They aren't outliers. The strength distribution curve is symetrical (with the males curve being nudged forward). Take a look at sports. Males outperform women. It's the reason why leages and events are separated. I guarantee you that all those women train hard. And they still get beaten by men who train hard. Or if you want antoher example...women in the miltiary? Sure, there are some. Women in special forces? Nope. -
Nerfing? Mages were GODS in D&D. And again, they always have fallback methods..wands, scrolls and weapons. Mages aren't incompetent.

That's why I say every class has fatigue. That doesn't mean that all classes would tire equally fast. Technicly, you can have mages have both fatigue and mana. Mana is used for casting and regenerates (spell cost 20 mana, 2 fatigue) but it also lowers a bit of fatigue. Almost the same thing, except the source of magic is seperate. Why? Because if magic runs only on fatigue, wouldn't that be a CON score? Or you could technicly have the max fatigue be a combination of INT/WIS and CON. OR have everyone have a fatigue score of 100 (as in 100%) and have the rate of delpetion depends on CON/WIS or whatever. Plenty of possiblities there. It also depends how the setting explains magic. Normally I'd say that magic would be very taxing on the body. But I'd really want to have powerfull magics. The idea of lobbing of magical missiles constantly like in DA2 doesn't appeal to me at all. I'd rather have a dozen nuke spells and having to resort to using weapons occasioanly than that garbage. That's not flawed desing. Bows do use ammo. Swords don't. An archer should stock up before going on a longer expedition, he should collect arrows, repair broken ones if possible. And he always has his backup weapons. An archer can use a sword you know...

If some don't like Vanacian and many don't like cooldowns, what then? Here's an idea: Fatigue * EDIT: in case you havn't figured it out yet, red is health, green is morale * Lets say your mage starts the day with 100 fatigue (or 1000.. higher numbers might be better for balancing and nuances) He and the party go traveling. They've been on the road for 2 hours and the mages maximum fatigue has gone down, so now he's at 90/90. Max fatigue goes down as the day goes by and as you do physicly demanding things (long journesy, running, etc..). Even if you don't cast any spells, you will need sleep. So your group runs into some orcs. Battle starts. You launch a pretty powerfull spell that costs 15 fatigue. Roughly 10% of that costs is drawn from MAX fatigue. Your max fatigue has now dropped down to 88. However, your regular fatigue will regenerate by roughly 1 point per second. In 15 seconds the mage will be at 88/88. He can cast antoher spell immediately or wait. Had he/she cast a less pwoerfull spell, the max fatigue would have been reduced only by 1 point. Either way, as time passes and the battles go on, the MAX fatigue drops. At 25% the character (any character, fighter or mage) becomes tired. It's harder to focus, but not by much. At 0% the characte is dead tired. He cna still continue to fight and move, but the penalties become severe. Miscasting becomesalmost a certanty. The only way to recover MAX fatigue is by resting. Yes resting. Resting should be a part of any true RPG. It gives inns and villages a clear purpose. It is a safe haven to gather information, prepare, stock up, rest and heal. I'd propose even healing to be very difficult. A natural and slow process. Healign spells don't heal fully - they give back only a small amount of HP (and a character cannot be healed over 50% wihout rest), but increase natural regeneration. - Note it would still take hours for critical wounds to heal. Without healing magic it might take days. This even more gives a feelign of a real adventure and resource managment. Pulling back and regrouping becomes not onnly a valid tactic, but sometimes necessary (realistic, no?). Also, leaving a wounded companion in the inn to recouperate while you take another companion with you for a while becomes an enticing prospect. Personally, I'd rather have a few powerfull spells that I can't cast all of the time, and having to resort to a crossbow/staff/sword often enough, thanto have easily spammable low-level spells. That just sucks. More like Gandalf, less like Hawke.

Maybe. I really can't answer that question as I can't go back in time and play a different BG2, but my experience would DEFINATIVELY be different. But you do know what the word "core feature" means, no? CORE. Sometimes even a small change can have far-reaching consequences. Traveling resting and resource managment is what makes PnP great. And an ideal CRPG (to me) is as close to PnP as you can get. Tell me, how will you bring back the old feeling of dangerous travel, fatigue and forboading as you make your way back to the village tovern to rest? Another poster said it far better than I did earlier. The atmosphere and feeling change. Completely ruined? no. Going from 10/10 to average? Yes. -

I still stay cooldowns are garbage. The resting "spam" can easily be fixed. Don't allow resting in some areas. OR Don't allow saving everywhere (hence the reload-rest mechanics ceases to work) What if you can only save in safe areas? Make resting in unsafe areas even unsafer? There you go. How would the player abuse it now? Resting isn't a stupid mechanic. Never was. It was a mechanic that makes sesne because people haev to rest...and sleep- 661 replies

Overreaction theater!
TrashMan replied to Madzookeeper's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
What happened? People were promissed an experience like in the old days. Now when you start saying things like "no rest", "cooldowns" and such, you effectively shatter the connection to the old games. Does that sound like hte games of old? It doesn't to me. As far as I'm concerned it's not the isometric perspective that made the old games so fun to play. It was the mechanics. Without rest, without something similar to vanacian (even fatigue would do. Heck ,ti would probably work better)..it's not it anymore. I guess what makes hte "core" of the old experience is subjective, but for me it is that. So yes, I'm damn worried. So what I want is more details and clarifications on those things..preferably before Kickstarter ends. I'm going to wait till the last day to make changes to my pledge. What is said till then will determine the final amount of $$. But even if I am totally dissapointed, I'll still pledge something, simply because I still belive in old-school RPG's. -

How the hell is that better? Now you have to wait actual 8 hours to get the spell back instead of finiding a safe spot and resitng. Also, it makes resting and sleepign compeltely superflous. Horrible. Horrible. Seems hte devs want to do away with resting, which was IMHO one of the best things that added to the atmosphere of old IE games.- 661 replies
