When I read or watch, I tend to put things in a game design perspective, so what others might largely regard as a crappy movie, I’m always asking myself how it would translate into a game environment. So for example: 30 Days of Night, Battle Royale, Cube, Lifeboat, Crank, the Darkest Day, etc. end up being inspiring because I can break them down by system and level design mechanics. I also read a lot of comics and graphic novels, and some stand-outs are: Walking Dead (and the new Manifest Destiny by Skybound), Wild Blue Yonder, Zero, Secret, Protocol Orphans, Day Men, Black Science (fantastic), and Sex Criminals. More on Sex Criminals a few lines down. Lastly, I keep going back to Batman. Not only do I like the current Snyder run immensely, but Batman is the ultimate example of a designer’s primary job: execution. Batman, at its core, is a stupid idea. Rich kid dresses up like a bat and fights crime and his arch-enemy is a clown. But, in the right hands, it can become so much more with context, presentation, character design, and psychology. (Side note: Sex Criminals is the latest example of this – when I heard the premise, I thought it was the dumbest one-sentence I’d ever read – the execution, however, is fantastic and now I encourage everyone to give it a read.)

One question to devs

Yeah, APs romances were... weird. Scarlet's e-mails read like someone just f**** around. -
His comments on Batman and 30 Days of Night are spot on.

Common pitfalls of CRPG games to avoid

I have nothing against Branching Plot. Branching Story is a whole 'nother matter. -

I don't see why there wouldn't be. -

You may find yourself in quite the minority on these forums with that opinion, Bryy. I fully understand this. Say it on NeoGAF and they act like you shot their mother. -
I did my taxes today! I'm still doing them! 4k of Business Loss last year and only $117 refunded so far! MERIKA.

I backed Aleph. Back when I didn't know any friggin' better. I pledged for my own item/weapon set. Open world, hundreds of enemies. One guy working on it. Yeah, the KS ended in 2011.

This, behind Banner and PoE, has been my most anticipated gamestarter.

Bryy replied to TrashMan's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Ah, ok - never played AP (nor the WItcher 2) but wasn't the choice there a good thing? Didn't know people were bashing it. Being forced to replay the game if you want the full story is never a good thing. -
Do you want Alpha Protocol 2?
Bryy replied to Marburg's Postman's topic in Alpha Protocol: General Discussion
I would love to, but this is really just another instance of "we can use Kickstarter to fund Firefly Season 2". -
Those are hilarious when mistranslated with Google.

Yep - choice and consequence should be the foundation of a good rpg but have all too often been put to 'choice A or B' ('Good' or 'Evil') and then 'Same result' but pretty graphical effects while doing so. (Or 2 endings with the 2nd ignored for the sequel, which, admittedly, is harder to do). You misunderstand me. These terms have such a high value now that no game can ever come close to attaining what players want. Alpha Protocol had way more choice than The Witcher 2 did, but nobody cares about AP because TW2 locks you out of half the game. -
I'm unhealthily addicted to Amalur, a game that keeps getting more mundane the more I play it. The class unlock system is neat and new and innovative. Too bad the classes are all too specific.

Also, how "choice" and "consequence" have become these God-tier mythical concepts whenever we're talking about RPGs. Actually, add "story" to that as well. How many times have you heard "I don't care about the gameplay/graphics as long as the story is good"? -

Nope, sorry, your opinion does not equal fact. Having a limited number of stuff in a tier is actually good because it promotes that tier selling out.

The MMO is already announced and isn't an Obsidian project, though, mostly something they're collaborating on in a small capacity (the team working on it is 15-ish I think?) But was it officially announced?

Here is the link to Army of Tentacles on Steam Greenlight: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=184635793 We're more RPG. Stats, items, a whole leveling system, a time system. Events that happen on certain days. Multiple endings (maybe even 36 based on slight variations!).- 16 replies
