PE already inspiring others
Hornet85 replied to norolim's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Well EA cannot start a Kickstarter (at least I hope not, lol). So whatever Dragon Age 3 may be, people will only buy it when its released and that's a long time away. For now people will not be choosing between DA3 or this. But I can see your point , if some other indie dev are coming up with another similar KS project, then yeah that might cause them to push their own KS earlier. -

All I get was old school RPG old school RPG and old school RPG. It feels like they rushed it out without much details or even a proper name. What the fans need to know is that these people have plan everything out and know where they are heading. Had they properly lay out everything, I think they would have gotten more backers. Old school RPG doesn't guarantee that the game will be good. We need to know more. They need their project to be able to stand on its own without that old school RPG labeling. They overused the "old school RPG" label to the point of calling the project Old School RPG. IMO that's a mistake, it gives the impression that they just want to cash in on this old school RPG phenomena without a proper plan that can stand on its own. That said, I do hope they get their stuff together and that it will be a success. They really need to put out more info on exactly what they are trying to make., -

stick to your guns, devs

So you are being selective then on what should adhere to real world physics and what should get a free pass. Who said you need to explain anything. Its about the premise of the game which is fantasy, nothing is realistic in a fantasy setting. Realism gets thrown out the moment you have magic. Did you even read what he posted? He want armor to be realistic. So, metal alloy needs to conduct electricity to be realistic. Cloth armor needs to burn up to be realistic. -

The problem here is everyone here thinks their ideas are great ideas. If you let the people here make a game, I will bet you the project will never see the day of light. The people here can never agree on anything. You have to keep in mind that good is a relative and in this context, subjective term. There is NO any objective way of determining what's good and whats not. So the best we can do is to trust the dev because they are the creative minds with the experience in making video games. None of us even have the credentials. -

There's nothing realistic about shooting fireballs out of a wooden stick. If you want realistic armor, then guess what. Robes should burn to ashes the moment it gets hit by a fireball, and a warrior should get fried to death when his metal armor gets hit by a lightning bolt. Video game and realism don't mix. -
I am not expecting the game to be another Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale. If I want to play Baldur's Gate I'll go play Baldur's Gate. There's no reason why PE needs to emulate those game. PE will be a new cRPG game, all I expect is a game who's quality stands on its own. PE should be that new girlfried you love for who she is herself, without the need to compare her to all your previous ex-girlfriends

Overreaction theater!
Hornet85 replied to Madzookeeper's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
The problem is many people often fail to see the big picture. The biggest problem comes from the fact that everyone thinks they know what makes a great game, when in actual fact, they are just preaching what they want. What makes a great game is subjective, there's no any way around this. Different people have different opinion on what makes a game great, and they are not facts. There is no way Obsidian can satisfy everyone to every little details. But that doesn't mean they cannot make a game that's great to the majority of people. This is why Obsidian have to make their own decision on what direction they want to go with. If they say it will be real time combat, then it will be real time combat. If a person doesn't like this, then that's unfortunate but no one is forced to back it. -

I'm glad you brought this up. Its pretty much the feeling I get too. Everytime the dev reveal something, there will be someone marching in chanting I don't want this and that. Eww this hate that. Just look at the latest update. People are hating even on crafting items. We don't even know the details yet. Obsidian do not need us to tell them how to make the game. They have already decided what to do, I don't care how much you dislike it. Either you accept it or you don't and move on. -
Modding tools, IMO is the most powerful ace here. Making the big 3.0 million dollar stretch goal for modding tool will be fitting. After that, the sky is pretty much the limit. With modding tools, the community will be able to pretty much customize the game to their liking and so on, I don't need to elaborate on the importance of it. Its a must. I'd go as far as to say its mandatory, or at least it should be. Its better than yet another companion or another dungeon because with it, you can have unlimited companion, dungeons, and other content from the community.

I'm not sure why realism is brought up at all because there's nothing realistic about shooting fireballs from a wooden stick or having tiny human with pointy ears. Strange why people think the physics of armor should be realistic although people are shooting fireballs at each other. You want realistic armor, then make everyone gets roasted to death in a metal alloy armor the moment they get hit with a fireball or get zapped with a lightning arc.

Sometimes I swear this game will never be made if the dev had to listen to each and everyone of us. We can never agree on anything. The dev knows what they are doing. Me for one, trust Obsidian 100% on making a great game, and not a customized game to my own personal taste because we all have different taste. Let them do what they think will work for the game.

You can't dump optical discs into cardbox boxes without additional holders for the disc. Besides, plastic cases are being mass produced these days, and so yes, you can get them for very cheap simply because people are already producing them by the masses. If you want to have a custom made case, irrespective of its material, its going to be very expensive. I'd imagine its cheaper to print covers that can be slot into a plastic case, than to print an entire box.

Its 2012, I can't believe I'm still seeing ASCII being thrown around. ASCII was used due to the hardware limitation at that time. Dev didn't go out of their way to force the players to stare at a wall of characters for artistic purposes. There's no reason why any game should have primitive graphics just for the sake of having that that feel of using a DOS machine.

No it isn't. You are playing the game by yourself, one conscious being interacting with the artificial environment. That's not sport, and neither is it team work. Each of the characters you control are just scripted AI that still requires your participation. And there's only one person actively participating. There's nothing team nor sport about that.

Translations
Hornet85 replied to jerf's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
How many times are you guys going to argue about this? I don't care how much you hate translation, the dev have already said they will translate the game. Can't you guys just leave it at that? Those who doesn't want translation could just not waste their time posting on threads about translation. Its embarrassing that some people are still marching the whole learn English say no to translation agenda. -

For some reason this reminds me of the story in a game titled Silent Hill. There was this character Lisa where we met several times as she helps "us" (as in the character we play.) she shared her fears and so on that I felt attached to her as the game progresses, there's this feeling that I wanted Lisa to survive along with me. She later turned into one of those undead nurse and it really made me angry for some reason, lol. Its as if I was that character Harry and I was feeling what he felt as he realized he couldn't save her. I like that in a game's story. Silent Hill 2 did the same for me as well. Its as if we could really feel the emotion of the character we're playing. This is why whenever someone asked me which game have the best story I've came across, I would immediately say Silent Hill 1 and 2. If a story could be told in such a way that it invokes emotions in the player, I think its great, even if its a tragic that makes me say I really wish that didn't happen.
