Exploring a brand new ip is always enjoyable for me, so I'm looking forward to seeing what Obsidian can do when creating their very own fantasy world. I believe Obsidian will create a rich and interesting new world for their PE universe, and despite the fact that they're sticking to a very traditional and safe "toolset" when creating the world so as to appeal to those who loved BG2, there are things that I've read in the updates that make me very eager to see how they will implement and utilize them. An aspect of the world that I'm greatly interested in is the cultures, which have been some of the most consistently compelling points of the updates. Really looking forward to the stronghold. The Strongold update really got me the most eager I've been for the game since the Kickstarter. The Orlan and Aumaua are quite appealing and I look forward to learning more about them. I was initially disappointed with them after hearing that the stretch-goal races were going to be "weird" races but finding out that they were the equivalent a hairy hobbit and a half-orc respectively. I was expecting a bit more weird in my weird races. The Orlan and the Aumaua have since grown on me after I learned more about them, and I now quite like them. Aside from the Wood Elves and the Mountain Dwarves I'm quite happy with PE's selection of playable races. Another thing I'm looking forward to is the reactivity that we've heard a bit about. It'll be great to have companions and NPCs treat you with different attitudes depending on your race/culture. Also, since the game won't be fully voiced or cinematic I'm wondering how much that will allow them to experiment with choices and consequences. The games' small budget will still have to be taken into account of course. I'm still a bit irritated that they fell back onto elves as a race though, but I'll get over it. Mostly.

The Aedyr and the Vailians are both large, colonial powers with mostly similar levels of technology, the Vailians being somewhat ahead in that area. The Vailians and Aedyr also presumably frequently interact with one another, as most large empires with goods to trade are wont to do. The Spanish were a large colonial empire whilst the Incas were an isolated people who still used obsidian in their tools and weapons. A more apt comparison from the Spaniards to the Incas would be the Vailians to the Boreal Dwarves. That first explanation is interesting. Another thing that I thought of is that their dress could be very class based, as only free Roman men were allowed to wear togas, and I believe Sawyer has stated that the Aedyr do own slaves. Therefore it could a status thing as well, where wealthy Aedyr wear archaic fashions from their empire's past in order to further distinguish themselves from the lower class and the slaves. In an early update it was stated that not everyone could use magic, meaning that effective armour is still necessary for the average soldier. Also, if magic truly did make armour less neccessary or uneccesary, then some wizards would not need to wear it into battle, but they do, so we can assume that mundane protection is still necessary despite the protection offered by magic.

Update #65: Ciphers
GhoulishVisage replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
It looks like we finally found out what a Watcher is. That's been a niggling little question on my mind ever since the countdown screen. "This world wants to drag us down, it does. It made you a Watcher. No one asks for that. And the weight, that guilt they want to hang around my neck, you don't have to carry it one more step. You think they won't let you rest but it's not up to them, it never was." And at the end of the KS video: "No rest for the Watcher." Concerning the Vithrack, is that thing on the front of it's chest is a web-spinning organ? This is a very strange complaint. Why should an octopus (Illithid) have psychic powers or a hive-mind either? Who's to say that the Vithrack have a hive-mind at all?- 201 replies

Update #65: Ciphers
GhoulishVisage replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Really cool update. The Cipher class sounds very interesting. That Orlan is probably doubly disliked due to the fact that he is both an Orlan and a Cipher. Question: Are the Vithrak, like the Illitihds, a race that is always "evil" and act as such or are they merely perceived that way because of the lack of the ability to communicate with them and their alien nature?- 201 replies

Unwritten: Echoes of Twilight looks interesting. It's being made by some experienced modders who are familiar with open-world games. The budget looks pretty small for such a game though, and it looks a tad generic so far. They don't seem to have a video up for some perplexing reason. The Long Dark also looks interesting, and I'm always up for zombie-less apocalypses. By a pretty experienced team. KS donations really seem to have slowed to a crawl there days, despite Fargo's insistance to the contrary. If you don't have a fan-favourite name to back you up you're going to struggle a bit.

C2B's Next-Gen Obsidian RPG Speculation thread
GhoulishVisage replied to C2B's topic in Obsidian General
I was thinking about some DC properties that could make for interesting RPGs. Off the top of my head: Doom Patrol Swamp Thing/Animal Man Starman The Shade Gotham Central (Considering Avellone's interest in a The Wire RPG) Demon Knights Secret 6 Hellblazer Frankenstein - Agents of SHADE JLI Astro City That's some non-Vetigo stuff of course. -

And you are fully entitled to your wrong opinion. DC's current editorial for their comics and their cinematic universe may be (severely) lacking, but they have some fantastic ips and a rich history to draw from. They also own Vertigo, so there's that. -
I see The Nameless One forgot to brush his hair this morning.

If Obsidian kickstarts a space opera RPG, would you back it?

Eh, I always preferred the one that compared the types of humour in the two games, as it's obvious KOTOR 1 and 2 were shooting for vastly different tones and the villains reflect that.

GhoulishVisage replied to Arcoss's topic in Computer and Console
Yeah I would, but there are things I'd far rather see from them. Chief amongst those things is a horror RPG in the spirit of Bloodlines. -
Speaking of armour and clothing designs, one thing that has been niggling at me is how the Aedyr garb looks like it's from a completely different era to the Vailian clothing. Like hundreds of years difference. I wonder if their armour will be similarly archaic in design? Would it be possible to make Roman/Greek inspired armour seem functional against early-modern period inspired armour without it losing it's aesthetic sensibilities? Is the Aedyr armour even going to be inspired by those cultures at all?

C2B's Next-Gen Obsidian RPG Speculation thread
GhoulishVisage replied to C2B's topic in Obsidian General
A well done RPG in the Potterverse could be interesting indeed. There are other franchises that I'd prefer an Obsidian RPG set in, or even a new IP entirely, but you could certainly do worse than Harry Potter. But isn't the Harry Potter video-game license in EA's hands? They did all the movie tie-ins. -

C2B's Next-Gen Obsidian RPG Speculation thread
GhoulishVisage replied to C2B's topic in Obsidian General
I don't think it will be Star Wars related. The Star Wars license is now in EA's hands and they have a big in-house RPG dev in the form of Bioware, so I doubt they'd go to Obsidian for that. In this Kotaku article from a while back, Feargus said they were being contacted by Warner Bros (amongst others) to do an RPG with them. Warner Bros has two big franchises that they like to turn into video-games: Lord of the Rings and their DC Comics IPs. Warner Bros has also stated that they want to look into expanding their roster of DC Comics branded games beyond the Arkham games and Batman. Could Obsidian's next project be an RPG based on a DC property? This may all be wishful thinking on my part though. -
Update #63: Stronghold!
GhoulishVisage replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Yes! I'm very excited about the Stronghold particularly in Project Eternity, and I've been wanting to hear more info about it for quite a while. It all sounds very fun, and likely something I am liable to spend a little too much time on. I still think that a butler would make a good addition to the Stronghold, to oversee things whilst you're away and to tell you everything that has happened when you come back. Maybe I just want to play as Batman too much.- 455 replies

Planescape: Torment and Mask of the Betrayer had the best evil playthroughs ever and they weren't cheesy at all. Hell, MotB's evil path is arguably much better than it's good path. Both games had me going "Holy ****" the whole way through their evil routes. They both had you be a complete and total bastard in ways that I have not seen equaled in other games. They both left me feeling a little hollow and dumbfounded after certain parts. It was marvelous. That goes for my answer to OP's question too: equal or come close to Mask of the Betrayer in terms of an evil campaign and I will be more than satisfied.

NWN2's UI always looked too sterile to me. Too out of place. I'd prefer an updated version of the earlier IE UIs, retaining the feel and solidity of them, whilst at the same time updating the ease of use and sensibilities to a more modern feel. I quite like the wood that the UI looked like it was made of in the mock-up, but I'd prefer a darker material that still retains it's solid feel, but manages to "blend" a little more. Slate or wrought iron might look good for that:

Edit: since my comment was just as lame as that pun. Personally Osvir, ever since I heard that there was an entire society of barbarian Glanfatharn elves in PE I have wished that our elf companion would be a barbarian instead of a wizard. Having a barbarian elf in the party might make up for the fact that he's an elf. Aloth's magic still looks fantastic though.
