Update #69: Pillars of Eternity
GhoulishVisage replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Oh yes. This is what I've been waiting for. This is the good stuff. Gorgeous teaser, loved some of those new environments I don't suppose you feel like posting those two new companion portraits in a bigger res for us to admire?- 488 replies

It's been obvious for a while now that he wouldn't pull through this one, but hearing it announced officially is still sad. It's also really unfortunate that the the ANC, the party he became the face of, has been... less than optimal as of late. Hell, there's rumblings to have Zuma impeached for stealing taxpayer money. The current state of the ANC isn't what Mandela fought to achieve, and to have this shadow around the ANC at the time of his death is just the biggest pity.

Update #68: ART!
GhoulishVisage replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Whee, art! Very nice. Do these pics have the top layer that adds the extra detail in them? I remember that the pics of the stronghold apparently didn't have that added yet. Interesting to learn which area will be the second big city. It looks like the ancient natural feel of Twin Elms will contrast with the more modern developed feel of Defiance Bay.- 240 replies

PC Portrait ideas
GhoulishVisage replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Huh, I thought we'd be able to choose hairstyles and appearance from looking at updates like #41: Dwarves and Doors and #56: Paladins and Wild Orlans. -
PC Portrait ideas
GhoulishVisage replied to Sensuki's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Are we certain that portraits will be available for the player character? Since there is customisation available for the pc that wasn't available for you in games like BG or IWD there will be a big difference between what you make and what the portraits will look like. Because of this one can assume that the 3d model will be used for the player character's portrait, if not the companions. Edit: Spelling -
Chris Avellone MIGS 2013
GhoulishVisage replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I agree, I love that one. She's possibly an air-element Godlike, judging by the feathers. The companion portraits are Kaz's work, I believe. Though the high collar, plate armour and her being black would also speak for Vailian. Maybe sort of both? I believe every race/culture has godlikes amongst them in PE. -

GhoulishVisage replied to C2B's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Here are the pictures of the two new sceneries and the two companion/npc pics for those who just want to see the goods. I think I missed a concept art somewhere though. Avellone's talk was also pretty interesting, but there was also a lot of stuff that was retreads of what he's already said. Edit: to save space and for those who might not want to see the companion pics before the game comes out. -

Partially it had to do with consoles becoming the preferred platform of choice for publishers. Isometric rpgs don't work well on console, so third person rpgs got a lot more focus with games like KOTOR, Mass Effect etc. Another reason is the shift towards cinematic experiences in gameplay. Isometric RPGs may be many things, but a cinematic experience (outside of cutscenes) is not one of them.

Update #66: Double Whammy
GhoulishVisage replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Aw yeah. This stronghold is going to be awesome. Also interesting to hear that the lead environment artist is an ex-Bloodlines guy. That game dripped atmosphere.- 208 replies

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-07-05-project-eternity-as-a-series-could-run-for-eternity Modding support is more uncertain at the moment. The game is being designed with a certain audience in mind. An audience that doesn't want the game altered, changed or "streamlined" to be controller friendly, that doesn't want resources diverted away from important things to make ye another game that's limited in it's design to make it accessible to those who want it to be just another consolified game. The backers paid for a pc game that's designed with a keyboard and mouse in mind. A proper crpg.

To all of our backers and fans...
GhoulishVisage replied to BAdler's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Announcements & News
Could you do a little bit of lore for us? Just something to sate the tastebuds. Tell us about Valarian trading routes or something stupid so you aren't eaten by Josh next time he sees you. Or something else, how do the Valarian Republic and the Aedyr Empire view each other? Uneasy allies? Rivals? Fast friends? Trading partners? Colonial buddies? Also, if you can tell us, why aren't you guys doing a vertical slice video? When you said there'd be a big announcement I thought it'd be some vertical slice footage for sure, but you guys then said that it definitely WOULDN'T be that.- 261 replies

See, this is what I don't understand. Why are people so resistant to new concepts? Even the Orlan and Aumaua aren't too fresh, taking up the slots of the halfling and the half-orc from DnD. Their spin just happens to be unique enough that the parallels aren't entirely obvious. The Godlike (doubtful that's their final name) are basically Genasi and there's little to differentiate them. It's the same thing with the guns, when the KS first went up there was a big furore about there being guns in PE and how that would somehow de-legitimise the setting because they didn't want to step away from the safe bubble that fantasy rpgs have created, even if that difference was as minor as guns being present. Why do people just want to see the same stuff over and over and over again instead of new concepts and races individual to settings being introduced? The Qunari were an interesting part of DA:O and one of the only good parts of DA2 not because they were a new spin on elves or dwarves, but because they were an entirely new idea that was unique to the setting. It's hard for something to become iconic to a particular ip if that ip just uses the same old stuff from all the other games, books and movies. So why do you want to see the same things over and over again? Especially when they're as played out and dull as elves?

Alright, so I've already said a few of these in that other thread, but I'll repeat them since this thread is specifically about complaints. Also, personal opinions ahead: -Elves. So we got a whole new world, one in which we could have any number of new and exciting things and we got... elves. For some reason I don't mind dwarves so much as I do elves, despite them being just as broadly used as bloody elves. They just don't feel as creatively stagnant. Also the Sagani piece is still my favourite bit of PE art. Thank gods they at least don't have bloody orcs. -Weird races aren't really weird. When Sawyer said "weird" I was expecting a bit more... weird. The Orlans and Aumaua have since grown on me and I'm really looking forward to learning more about them, particularly the Aumaua, but I still wish there was just one really out-there race. We could always get rid of the elves to make room for a more interesting race. -Little PS:T influence from what we've seen So this one's a bit more hazy, as details of what's actually going to be going on in the game-world are relatively scarce. We've seen a whole lotta Baldur's Gate, but no Planescape. PE claims to be drawing influence from all of the IE games, but the surreal weirdness of PS:T seems to be missing from the monster and world design that we've seen so far. A pity since Baldur's Gate and Sword Coast are actually fairly boring settings that have been spiced up by the content of the games they appear in. Other than that I really love what I've seen. The cultures look and sound interesting, the lore sounds intriguing, the stronghold is really exciting and the PE updates are a highlight of my week.

Why do you think that is? A game based on the the cultures of sub-Saharan Africa could be a fantastic and completely unique experience. Also obyknven, if I remember correctly the Vailians migrated from their hotter lands of origin to colder areas in the North long ago in the PE setting, thus their warmer garb and different aesthetic style.
