Journalism and bias in the gaming industry
GhoulishVisage replied to Blarghagh's topic in Way Off-Topic
I cannot say I'm impressed with Apple's decision to pull all games with a Confederate flag in them from the Apple store, even those based on the Civil War. It's a rare day when Warner Bros looks wiser than anyone, but here's something that was shown on DVDs for the old Looney Tunes cartoons: A far more meaningful way of going about things, I think.- 533 replies

Hm. Kinda hard to tell where that one is coming from. Certainly a bit of a jab at GG, but there also seems to be a bit of a jab at the other side. Ah well. Just a bit of harmless ribbing either way. Hopefully no-one will take it too seriously. As amusing as the thought of The Riddler raging about being called names on the internet is, this is how octogenarians and Fox News think people write on the internet.- 533 replies

Adrian Chmielars, the man behind games like Painkiller, Bulletstorm and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter has a good write-up on the closure of Tale of Tales: http://www.theastronauts.com/2015/06/what-really-happened-to-tale-of-tales-sunset/ While I don't like to see anybody go out of business, my disposition to them gets somewhat soured when they go and say things like this:- 533 replies

Being a fan of Troika I am well aware that brilliant games can sell poorly. While the market can be effective at sorting the wheat from the chaff, success there does not always mean that it is a game that is either worthy of the praise it is given or the number of units it sells. Very often gems slip through the cracks and mediocrity is held up as the gold standard. Indeed, these days it seems that more often than not it is a game's marketing that determines whether something is a success or not. Niche games tend to have more luck at becoming successful via word-of-mouth than games that try to aim for broad appeal.- 533 replies

No, I would not really have a problem with it. While I do prefer playing as a male character I greatly enjoyed Dishonored and would snap up the sequel regardless of what gender the protagonist is. I do, however have problem with people going "It's a pity they still have a male protagonist." I mean like, what the hell. The only reason someone would say than when the designers have purposefully designed a game with two distinct feeling characters in it is so that they can feel superior to those who would feel disappointed about the lack of a male option for them to experience the game from. Similarly I dislike those who would disdain the developers for adding a female option when they obviously believe it adds to the experience simply because feminists would approve of the inclusion. Luckily I have only seen one rather grumpy post on /v/ that expressed those sentiments.- 533 replies

Funny how they chose which subs to ban first. FPH, vile as it was, generally just stewed in its own little corner. Yet subs dedicated to far more sinister things still stand, including subs that are known for doxxing people they do not like. It's just like Twitter. Groups like ISIS have been preaching and using social media as a recruitment tool, which is a truly horrifying thought. Yet they managed to do so with only token complaints from both twitter and the press, then comes along GG and suddenly twitter is approving blocklists. It seems that people only care about certain sensibilities. The nicest guy on the internet, Boogie2988 has posted a video on recent events: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBmScggN-dc- 533 replies

Here's a good little writeup on Witcher 3 and it's representation of Polish culture: http://www.giantbomb.com/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt/3030-41484/forums/on-the-witcher-3-culture-and-representation-1773068/#27 Poland has been on the short end of recent history's proverbial stick. They were invaded by both Germany and Russia in 1939 and slaughtered mercilessly under German occupation. Once the Germans were pushed out by the Russians the Soviets decided to set up camp and not leave. Over the next decades the Polish were subjected to Soviet rule and have their culture further ground down by the harsh Communist laws. When the Soviets eventually fell Poland was once again independent, but much like other ex-Soviet countries they were not prosperous like their new Western friends. Western European countries, Britain, the USA and Japan have all contributed hundreds of movies and video-games that are acclaimed internationally and have shaped popular culture. Eastern European countries? Not so much. Sure the were some things, but not very much, and most media produced there could be considered to have "cult" followings, if it does have any Western following at all. So when Poland created the Witcher they were incredibly proud of it. So proud in fact, that a copy of The Witcher 2 was presented to Barack Obama when he visited there. When The Witcher 3 was completed the Polish Prime Minister personally visited and thanked the developers of the game. She said: You can hear the pride in her voice that something Polish is getting recognition and love internationally. Not just any something, but something quintessentially Polish. She considers them ambassadors, and an ambassador generally acts as a representative of a culture and a country. I feel that sneering and spitting on The Witcher because it doesn't mirror your West Coast USA sensibilities is actually a bit selfish and narrow-minded.- 533 replies

I also have an issues with their alleged "world-building", which amounts to creating a theme-park of disconnected elements that lack any sense of nuance or cohesion. They simply exist for the pc to wander from one attraction to another. Nothing wrong with enjoying that, but I feel like it's a big step in the wrong direction for the Fallout games.

I honestly would buy the game if it looked like any attempted censorship of it might have had some weight, but the game coming out as-is in most areas was a forgone conclusion from the beginning. Well, I did hear Australia and Germany aren't selling it, but that's hardly surprising. -

No. I will not. I've watched videos of it, and aside from a nice art-style and a very good looking destruction and physics engine the game looks deadly dull. I'll fight for Hatred's right to exist and be sold, but I won't bother sitting through a tedious experience just for the sake of it or to thumb my nose at pearlclutchers. However, the developers have shown themselves to be technically competent and not adverse to controversy, so I'll keep an eye out for their next game now that they've gotten a bunch of funding for it from Hatred's sales. Hopefully their next game will have more to recommend it beyond an edgelord concept. -
Journalism and Bias in the Gaming Industry

The narrative was made by the journalists. The journalists like to scream "Don't buy this sick filth! If you do you're a horrible person supporting horrible people!", so many journalists jump on this that the game gets a lot of exposure. This was the wish of the developers in the first place. They now look like the radical rebel artists while the journos look like the town elders from Footloose. This doesn't bother the journalists one bit. Their stirring has generated a controversy, and controversies cause clicks. Hatred releases despite the wails of hipsters everywhere. It sells well despite the game's decidedly average nature. Are journalists upset? No. Of course not. This gives them a chance to decry it even further, allowing them to strike while the iron is hot and the topic is buzzing, allowing them to reap more clicks. The game subsequently sells enough to make it to the top of the Steam charts. Whether people bought it because of bile fascination, to thumb their nose at social justice types or in an attempt to be edgy doesn't matter. They bought it because of the way it was portrayed by the media. This is the exact same scenario that served Grand Theft Auto and Postal so well in the past. Despite these journalists and the Hatred developers expressing nothing but contempt for one another they form a mutually beneficial relationship. -

I've never really seen the appeal of bright red lipstick myself, but red is generally the universal color of physical and romantic attraction.
