Well, I'm ok with this as long as it doesn't turn into another BW bashing thread. DA2 was a bad game but that doesn't sully BW's previous projects for myself and in way BW is still doing what I knew them for. Which is entry level WRPGs that are easy to digest for those not used to the more straight forward mechanics of other games. I'd like to think that if any of BW customers are backing up PE is because they enjoy the genre and are looking for a different experience, rather than what they believe would be an improvement on the BW formula.

playing "evil"
Orogun01 replied to Michael_Galt's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
I think in the particular example you provide is the intent that matter, both the rebel and the reformist act out the desire of change for the better with varying means. One of them is just misguided but that all depends on their "evil" government, on whether it acquiesce to reform or brings down the hammer. The main problem with ethics in the real world is that they have to be judged on a case by case basis using different means but since we are dealing with role playing its the intent that's most important. It is really up to the writers to present each option so that it each becomes "tailored" to the player's views or to build up to a few reasonable conclusions. -
I really hope that this game leveling curve will be perfect, meaning there won't be any need to abuse it and players who do will feel bad because they feel that they are missing out on the experience. That's what it was for PS:T and that's what I want here, something crafted so well that the player won't want to alter the experience because they realize that it would ruin it.

This where extremist feminists fail, they are getting into a pissing contest with men and making a mess about. There is nothing wrong with gender roles or role reversal and I particularly dislike that most arguments seem to complain about fictional pieces of work. Not only is the negative focus of their rhetoric hurting them, it's quite possibly blinding them (and the world) to the myriad of positive examples shown through history. Nitpicking at fictional work instead of providing with an alternative does not progress make.

I want to be a dragon
Orogun01 replied to Dragonnn's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Hopefully if they decide to put in dragons they will flesh them out and tie them to their universe's lore. I believe i'm tired of dragons because there is so little effort to present them in different ways, they are basically the same in every fiction. -
playing "evil"

He is easy to misinterpret, specially when it comes to ethics. His focus was mostly on personal empowerment and active opposition against nihilism, so is partly his fault for exposing so little of his views on morals. I don't tend to think of consequentialism in such confined terms, in said cases is just utilitarianism and it searches for "the greater good for the greater amount of people"(do you hate this sentence too? ). But my point is that whether or not the end result is favorable it is independent of the character of a person. As such consequentialist ethics aren't really the ethics of an individual but rather those of a state or government. The word ethics come from the Greek ethos meaning character, and while consequentialist ethics do represent the character of communities we can only roleplay a person at a time. Although if there ever was the chance that a game allows the player enough power to actually affect the game world then they may concern with the greater whole. -
Indeed. I wouldn't mind some sexualized characters, but when 90% of women look like models and fight in sexualized and ridiculous armor, something is wrong. Fine, warriors shouldn't be sexualized. But we still get to keep bossomy wenches that bring beer while giving ample view of the valley between their mounds.

playing "evil"
Orogun01 replied to Michael_Galt's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Actually most serial rapists are diagnosed with some form of psychosis or social disorder that prevents them from fully engaging in courting rituals, they seek nothing more than what many other men want but they lack the means to obtain it. Both cases you present are of people merely exercising their power (albeit, forcefully) over others, the act itself is only as evil as the ends it produces. If you judge morals from an extreme relativistic view then there really isn't any good or evil outside of a system of belief or goal. Then you probably aren't big fan of ethics, since they are basically forced absolute values on a relativist world. Although I do dislike consequentialism, because you can have someone like Kony who acts out of weak morals and low virtues but may achieve some greater good. Now, people may believe that the ends justify the means but they don't justify the person. Just because they achieved a good doesn't make them any less virtuous or any less likely to commit atrocities again if given the chance and without a satisfactory end there is no redemption. Truly is the means what makes a man virtuous, because is the means what he controls and they are a reflection of his character. Is the means what he directly affects and even should he find himself forced in a situation to make the hard choice where the ends damn him either way. He may still remain virtuous as long as his character remains so. -

I respectfully disagree with regards to PS:T, you could go on to commit virtuous and heinous actions. In my view is the world that remained consistently grey with a few exceptions, there was no moral sense as we know it. The world had an atmosphere of desperation and grime about it that portrayed every NPC act as something out of necessity not evil, which is why I think it can be misinterpreted as a grey morality. -
Romance and friendship?
Orogun01 replied to Krikkert's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Now now, we are polite folk around these parts. Manners say that we must show our hospitality, besides it's not like there are going to be romances in the game anyways. So be kind to these new fellas...even if one of them is dressed as a furry. -

Seriously, I'm so jealous of that guy. I always wanted to reenter the atmosphere while listening to "Where Eagles Dare".

Don't use blink. The game apparently doesn't understand that shadows = being hidden. Plus it just takes me out of the story when the guy who was tortured for 6 months comes out being Mahatma Ghandi.

Romance and friendship?
Orogun01 replied to Krikkert's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
In PE's case that may well work since they counted the reason for no romances as having to do with the "condition" of the main character, it could be a sexless romance put there just to really give the player a sense of aggravation. P.S. Don't romance any peasant girls they are known disease carriers. Who is to say that your main character has to romance anyone? What if two of your companions find an attraction for each other, I think that's easier to write as well. If I have to watch two lovebirds in a game I want the option to cleave their heads, its bad enough that I can't do it in RL but if I can't do it in my fantasies then I really don't see the point of roleplaying -
Did they gave her any recipe for a follow up medication or treatment or something to help?

In video games, romance = sex scenes/fade to black and implied sex -
I really hate that game, I get how it can be compared with Thief but then I actually analyze the game and realize that it's actually an offense to Thief to compare it. Stealth comes down to just blinking from place to place, the game ask you to be an assassin but penalizes you for playing like an assassin ergo killing people. Then it gives you a bunch of lethal powers and gadgets and just one nonlethal dart. It frustrates me.

Development time too short
Orogun01 replied to PeonWarrior's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Also, less red tape and better direction with smaller studios. No one spends a month modelling a character that was never going to make it into the final version, or the project gets changed midways because some corporate saw his son play a game an enjoy so now he wants his game to have the same features. -
Hopefully it will be the last time, best wishes.

Length of the Game

This in a nutshell is the appeal of the silent protagonist, its an empty vessel for the player to insert him/herself into the story.
