The tone switches constantly between anime fluff and grim dark. From a beach episode to concentration camps. And somehow it all works. Probably because it's Japanese.

I completely agree, I see how totally lazy and unmotivated some people are on a daily basis. Why should they now have the same benefits that people who work hard and are productive have? In commie Utopia people work solely for the benefit of others, not for themselves.

The ending where civilization is destroyed and Desmond becomes the Messiah and is regarded as a god figure thousands of years later would've been a fitting way to end the series.
