  1. Unwinnable Encounters? I guess that would begin with your definition. Any TRULY unwinnable encounter (Lothar, Torment) should be kept to a BARE minimum. All the others (including Kangaxx) ... FIRE AWAY! Mwuhahaha *rubs hands*
  2. Woops made a mistake, got the Sapphire 7950 instead of the 7970 because the latter wasn't fitted as a Dual-X fan version until later. As complete computer silence was one of my goals, I had to cut a corner there! Also, I LOVE the K800 Illuminated Wireless keyboard. You couldn't pry that thing from my cold dead fingers!
  3. I think what would help most (next to broadspectrum advertisement) is setting a sense of urgency. Making clear that you're gonna lose your chance being part of something really cool once the kickstarter ends. Either by increasing pricing after the facts, reducing the rewards, both or other... And most importantly, telling everyone what will happen if you do wait until the KS ends!
  4. That's an amazing piece of art. Simply imagining the running water makes for one amazing scene. 3.5M for 2 Big cities is so worth it, guess I'll have to see if I can increase that pledge some more
  5. I'm rather wondering if people have too high expectations of the Unity 4 engine (or rather Obsidian's implementation of it). It was already stated that this game obviously won't have graphics on Crysis level or above, it's a financial decision. Adjustable lips is great and all but if you look at (for example) BG2 : Can you see the lip size on that guy? How would he look with a fat chin? Can you guess the answer? My personal opinion: I'd like customization options, nwn2's was more than sufficient for me. But this game won't have a floating camera I believe? Even zoom is merely "questioned" as pointed here: linky So how much will you actually see? I'd rather they expand our imagination using sweet (haha) portrait art and maybe some headspeak ala Fallout style? Whatever they choose, there's nothing in this world that can silence my enthousiasm for this game! Hopefully you customization advocates will think the same
  6. Hard to say how I'd like my death in a game. Torment was awesome, but that totally fitted in the storyline so a bit unfair. Having your main die and presenting the gameover screen leaves me with split feelings. Maindeathgameover makes sense if you feel as 1 with the main character (a.k.a. thinking you ARE the main character). And if "you" die, then yes it's gameover. (you could also argue the "leader" aspect... where if the head dies, the body follows) However you alter your gameplay accordingly, moving your main "out of the way" so you're ensured a continued game. Maindeathcontinue makes sense in that if you can revive other characters... why not your main? It's odd to include revive but somehow your main is not allowed? I almost feel discriminated! One of the downsides of this in my eyes is that you never feel "connected" with your main. If he/she can die just like the rest.. why does having a "main" matter? I guess it comes down to letting the game have a single protagonist (BG/PST) or having a protagonist group (IWD/TOEE). It's the question I'm DYING to see answered (see what I did there? :D if it was already answered somewhere, please tell me!) And as this is purely and entirely a matter of opinion, I'll voice mine right now: I like seeing a single protagonist, but I might be biased because I liked BG/PST more than other purely group style games. So I think I'm also biased towards a gameover if my main dies.
  7. Well spotted! One big eargasm.
  8. What's there to say, 1 big round of awesome for all you at Obsidian! Hard to stay away from kicktraq even as a mere backer, can't imagine how it is for actual employees
  9. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.

  10. Oh yeah that is classic (and source for Zoma's comment) http://rpgcodex.net/...ghlight=#348044 Dat link don't work Ah needs teh source! http://www.rpgcodex....07/#post-348044 www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/our-feargus-urquhart-interview.17907/#post-348044
  11. 1. Polish, Italian, Russian seems like the best candidates (and I'm dutch). 2. I would HIGHLY recommend allowing exotic/asian characters with the font however, as well as moddable text. This way fan communities can translate the game themselves in whatever language they seem fit. As a note though, I'd rather they choose option 2 and not spend money into any more translations (depending on cost).
  12. None taken! I guess I like to explore how big the world is even straight from the beginning. If that means I'll burn my fingers on some hot enemies, that's fine with me. I like the freedom. As I sidenote, I wouldn't have done it any other way now that I'm 29 If you like streamlined gameplay more, that's ok too! If you wish to discuss purely save/reload related functions, I can add a remark about that as well. My greatest annoyance with save/load systems is "losing time". The less I lose time, the better. Of course I should be punished for dying, so losing some time is ok. I think this "annoyance" is the same for everyone. Some people don't want to waste time on fruitless attempts on bosses where each insta death spell creates a reload situation. Others hate losing time where you accidently meet a death situation (trap etc) and you are suddenly forced in the position of loading a savegame which was saved 30 minutes earlier. It all comes down to time for me. I'll leave this one (as with XP question) up to Obsidian. If change is deemed necessary, I'll judge it when I see it!
  13. Already got Wasteland 2 coming as I'm sure many pledgers have as well. But it's great I get an extra copy! I'll try to convert a lucky infidel to the glory of RPG I'd almost forget... EXPANSION PACK **** YEAH !!
  14. Sometimes "stuff" just happens. In one of my first playthroughs of BG2 I accidently came across The Twisted Rune encounter in the bridge district. Because I hoard everything, I also hoarded a rogue stone. I was pretty young at the time so there wasn't really anything that could prepare me for what was inside, I just never expected it. And in retrospect, even if I did suspect something (as you're always on edge) there really wasn't anything I could do. Did it make me angry? Not at all , it's one of my most fond memories in fact. Result? One dead party. Same goes for Kangaxx, first time I played I had no idea what would happen if I combined all the limbs together (clues weren't really something for my 14year oldish eyes). Obviously I knew something "bad" would happen, but how could you possibly prepare for that? Did it make me mad? I LOVED IT, every second of it. Result? Dead party... multiple times Don't understand why people mind reloading (dying). Though maybe they should implement an easy/whimpy mode where you can't die and simply faint and recover in a monastery after a battle... But I wouldn't touch that mode with a ten-foot pole!
  15. After reading all these posts, I'm still unsure about how I feel about the different experience systems. I do feel that playing with a higher difficulty and/or difficulty options (heart of fury like etc), should reward you appropriately. But I'll trust Obsidian's choice here
  16. To keep it short: I like it when a game hands my ass to me if I decide to do something stupid. And yes with my ass I mean my death (err... ingame that is ). Which in turn causes a reload Now the definition of "something stupid" can be broad, but it will be fine as long as it's near BG2/PS:T's definition. Think : Messing with Kangaxx, Firkraag, Lothar. Or even "just" : Sarevok, Melissan, Bodhi, Irenicus. If your party is not tactically advanced enough or leveled enough, you should die. IMHO
  17. One discussion you see often regarding crafting is how it might unbalance the items in the game. An obvious solution to crafting either making epic items useless or the other way around is the following: Make crafting synergistic, like how cespenar could upgrade your Carsomyr +5 to +6. IF you took the time to get the right items. This approach seems like the best fit. It also allows "underpowered" epic items to become useful again if you REALLY like it (taking the time to upgrade it). You could take this global (any x item + y item = upgraded x item) or item specific. Also: I LOVE talking weapons with a personality!
  18. After talking about disability in my other post I figured I could make a whole topic out of this one. A long time ago I read about a kid with a disability and he talked about how he couldn't play a lot of games that were currently being released. In his case he could only use 1 hand (being quite problematic with a console). If you lookup "1 handed gamers" on a search engine, you might be surprised. Now just lke older Infinity Engine games, Eternity can easily give the basic level of support for people with disabilities. All you would need: 1. Make the game optionally "cursor only" playable (allowing 1 handed play). 2. Create subtitles for every sound/text. Of course this is simply an idea, but I think one that can easily be obtained if you start developing with it in mind. And who knows, maybe they already planned on making it playable 1 handed. Let me know what you guys think!
  19. Tried looking for that ui/resolution thread but couldn't find it, so I'll just spray my words here haha. I think having a good ui/resolution solution will give the game great survivability through the ages. Resolutions and ui size (especially UI size should be easily adjustable) should never be an issue. If you wanted to go all the way, you could even allow an adjustable height and width of the font (as an "advanced" option, else the option menu would be too crowded). Having that flexibility would aid people that have some sort of disability (which just gave me a good question). Biggest issue would be aspect ratio's. 4:3, 16:9 and 16:10 are the usual aspect ratio's at the moment. But who's to say this will remain so in the future? Being flexible there will keep this game playable years after it's release (without odd black borders). No idea what technology engines use currently to combat this, but I'm sure it'll be fine 2 annoyances I can list from playing "old" games on my new screen that "might" effect Eternity: 1. Black borders (wrong aspect ratio). 2. Increasing the resolution (think ahead with 4k+ resolutions) increases the viewable map size and "shrinks" objects (objects are harder to see, creating "distance" between you and your characters). Basically, I consider the UI and Supported resolutions (as well as zoom) a pretty big factor in a game. Something you don't realise if you're playing a game where it's already taken care of. But ruins games where they "didn't think ahead".
  20. Pledged through Paypal, couldn't figure out how to increase the pledge so I simply donated twice (second time using the "Donate Your Own Amount" option). Ready for my title : 'Fragment of the Obsidian Order' Looking forward to the journey ahead
  21. Donation just completed through paypal! Vowed I'd double the amount I paid for Wasteland 2's kickstarter if Obsidian would ever start one. And now I've most likely spent more then I'll ever spend on a game ever again. If this heralds the beginning of a new RPG era however... worth every penny. Let the good times begin!
  22. Had to chime in here I'd fork over at least 75 euro for a new REAL cRPG. If it's made by Obsidian I already know it's going to be good so I have no need to input anything. But as opinions were requested : 1 Please make it mature. No, not like Sexy Beach 3 or Grand Theft Auto. More like Heavy Rain. 2 While many voiced turnbased up to now, let me be the one to break the cycle. I prefer tactical combat, but don't think tactical and turnbased are 1 in the same. Do what you think gives the best experience and be inventive
  23. Time is a good point, Fallout 1-2 made you work to save your vault/village within the alotted time. If you went ahead and did whatever you want, you would eventually fail the game. I can't remember feeling any sense of urgency in Fallout 3.
  24. I can see why Bethesda would want their licensed series discussed on their forums. Can't see why that's a bad thing though ? But having to register to all of them... annoying
  25. Had to register to say that this is the most awesome game news I've seen in a while. I was disappointed when I first read that Bethesda had bought the Fallout license from Interplay. Obsidian was the runner-up for the license at the time if I remember correctly, but I might be wrong. First I have to say that Bethesda has done an amazing job with Fallout 3. They had a lot of pressure from the old Fallout fans (me included) and they created something exceptional. I thoroughly enjoyed Fallout 3 and the only thing I felt lacking significantly was the ending. My eyes almost popped out of their sockets when I read that Obsidian was hired for the next Fallout game. Fallout: New Vegas could be a game of epic proportions the size I haven't seen since Planescape. I can only hope the development time frame is long enough for this gem to truly be polished (2010 ) If they use a finished engine however, I believe it should be possible. I feel that every game Obsidian has released so far, has beaten it's predecessor (NWN,KOTOR). And I await Alpha Protocol and especially the Aliens RPG (please god, let it be released) patiently. If they can pull the same stunt with Fallout : New Vegas.... EPIC I tell you. Tips for the devs would definately include HUMOR! I didn't mention it earlier as something lacking in Fallout 3 as I felt it was more like something missing entirely. I remember almost literally rolling on the floor laughing in Fallout and Fallout 2 (Tragic the Garnering anyone ?). Humor can be hard feat to achieve, but if anyone can do it.... Other tips would include focussing on gameplay and story. Do I hear "no **** sherlock" ? I mean don't mess around with the other stuff that's not as important within the short timeframe. Having 50 different faces is nice, but reading something like : "I felt a great disturbance... as if a hundred evil bastards on an oil derrick cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced"... priceless. Obsidian appears to have mastery in the art of crafting stories. So I expect Fallout : New Vegas to be nothing other than stunning. I was wondering what Obsidian would do now that Bioware has been taken over by evil forces. Bethesda seems like a perfect match
