  1. You know that P:K has a "slow mode", right? You use the "v" button for it... It has a slow mod, but Pathfinder's whole combat system was supposed to be played as turn based, all the classes, feats and such are designed around the idea of turn based combat. No matter how slow you make it, it won't change that. Deadfire on the other hand, is designed for a computer, as a real time game with pause. You could say the same about AD&D. There were both rtwp and turn based games made in this system, guess which of them were more popular? Totally agree about Deadfire tho. Turn based IS however much easier to implement on consoles, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the direction the game - or POE3 - goes. I think the relative popularity of the Infinity Engine games has more to do with the visual polish than with being a better implementation of the system. The gold box games were a blocky pixelated mess even in their prime, but were truer to the game system itself. They were also much deeper than what Baldur's Gate and later games accomplished, outside of maybe Planescape. Tabletop RPGs have been turn based out of necessity, but the abstraction really helps when dealing with a party. I think real time is much more suited to games where you're only managing a single unit. Probably the main reason Obsidian tried so had to make a decent AI system in the sequel. There's just too much for the average person to keep track of in the heat of battle. One example from the top of my head: pretty sure Temple of Elemental Evil did not look worse than Baldur's Gate. And it had tactical combat implemented very well. Yet barely anyone talks about (or even remembers) this game.

  3. No. It was not my intention for one thing to imply the other. I'm just trying to imagine what kind of PoE3 would be greenlit by MS. I am a bit worried that we will get PoE3 as an aRPG because those sell better on consoles, but then again MS did make Age of Empires so maybe there's hope. Also I doubt Obs would just totally sell their soul to the devil. Like Blizzard did. And BioWare.
  4. If Deadfire gets a big enough sales boost from this though, all it's going to do is further reinforce the idea that turn based sells better than RTWP. Thus providing even less incentive for turn based games to add an optional real time mode. But other recent TB RPGs have done poorly, sales-wise: T:ToN, BT4; and Realms Beyond barely made it across the line for its Kickstarter. TB comes across as being extra popular because TB fans tend to be much more vocal and insistent on their preference than RTwP fans. Because what people don't seem to realize is that combat is not everything in an RPG title. T:ToN and BT4 sold badly because they sucked, not because they had turn-based combat (although in ToN case, it was really horrible).
  5. Recent Final Fantasy titles are all aRPGs, or a mix. Ah. That actually might be a better fit for the franchise. I just have distinct memories seeing my friend play FF7 on his playstation and watching his character run 20 yards up to an enemy, hit him with a sword the size of a dinner table, and run back - only to have the enemy do the exact same thing. I remember thinking that it was one of the dumbest things I'd ever seen, because even at 12 I somehow innately understood the immersion-crushing wrongness of presenting a combat encounter that way. Hardly. This is an attempt to cater to a different kind of audience, because die-hard FF fans are already hooked in. ATB based combat from previous FF games is clearly superior for most of the fans.
  6. The turn-based update is motivated by the console releases 100%. It eases so much of the jank of playing a game like this with a controller. Good observation! Imagine they're making turn-based as console exclusive game mode. I can already taste the salt :D Recent Final Fantasy titles are all aRPGs, or a mix.
  7. Not sure if serious, that last sentence threw me off.
  8. What’s the fun in not playing the game? I have everyone on autoattack (and occasional no AI if I want to time my recovery) and manage every ability use. It’s way more fun that way, than watching figurines smash it out with little imput from yours truly (what can I say - I am a control freak). It gets extremely tedious after a while. Most non-boss fights look exactly the same: I always use the same abilities in the same order, because it works best. Why wouldn't I want to automate it? In my opinion customizable scripts is the second greatest thing in Deadfire (after Eder). It's the same with stuff like pre-buffing in other games of this type. Like in Kingmaker you can have a party of 6, but I always run with 4 people just to cut down on tedious buffing between each rest.
  9. I understand that many people prefer turn based, but just imagining an enemy going around my tank is enough for me to want to stick to RTwP. But let's see how they deal with this and other problems. If this makes battles longer, then I'll definitely play with RTwP because it took a lot of time for me to finish my first pt. One way or another, it's a great option for players. RTwP is fantastic in this game because of scripts. Normally, if you have a big group, micromanagement is a beach. But with scripts, you skip most of that!
  10. I hope that college also has a Lawful Good course which teaches the importance of Monk/Pala dips :D
  11. Do you really think DOS2 was a success because it was turn-based? ;p
  12. Find a guy called "Mithrals" on YouTube. He has a few. With gameplay and tips.
  13. Except that game - like BG - is using a PnP system, so it tries to follow the rules. The initial outrage was caused by the fact that nobody really knew Pathfinder, and the difficulty threw them off. Now? People keep coming up with more and more "solo unfair" builds, and do you know how many balance patches did the game get? NONE.
  14. You are quite right. Just make sure to take an umbrella, because retaliation for a post like that will be swift.
  15. We already have a topic about this, you search-hating squirrel man!
  16. Eh, they just gave the game away to a different studio for porting IIRC. No big deal if it doesn't work, additional moniez is never a bad thing.
  17. It does matter in the long run. A bad selling game rarely produces sequels.
  18. Need I remind you that Deadfire had a huge overhaul patch shortly after its release? We were playing a different game every two months or so. That was maddening. It was nothing compared to the first Pillars though. Besides I did play Deadfire at release and completed it and didn't experience any game breaking bug. I wish I could say the same about Pathfinder Kingmaker (which hopefully will live up to its potential once it's fully patched). What do you mean nothing compared to the first Pillars? Well, to be fair, me neither. On my very first playthrough there were some bugs but nothing that could stop my progress. Got lucky I guess. So it was smooth sailing buuut suddenly balunz! Unfortunately I feel like the Kingmaker crew couldn't afford proper QA (or underestimated how neccessary it is), but I strongly believe they will learn and don't make this mistake in their next game.
  19. I don't remember this fight but battles with multiple mobs can generally be solved by casting Poison immunity spell on your whole team and spamming Cloudkill/Stinking Cloud.

  21. Don't worry about Linzi. Just wait till the end of the game. You will not be disappointed
  22. It is a japanese thing, yes. Silent protagonist is normal in many greatest jRPG titles of all time, like Chrono Trigger or Persona series. I personally see no appeal to this trend and I'm glad it's becoming somewhat uncommon in actual jRPG titles (the big ones at least) as of late. Then again, if the game has full VO, what's the difference between a silent protagonist and just clicking on dialogue lines without voiceovers? I prefer voiced protagonists in western RPG titles too. Kingmaker is very playable now, there are some minor bugs, but then again Deadfire still has bugs too. They patched the game quite nicely. Unfortunately, the way it looks now is how it should look on the release day, and since it didn't.. it barely scrapes 7/10 on Steam. Shame, because it's actually very good.
  23. So if someone steals from you, you find it acceptable to buy it back from that person because you feel bad about them? Your character is such a nice guy. Mine would gut the pig. EDIT: I wanted to do that with Linzi too (I really despise stealing and have no patience for it), but I didn't want to miss out on her quest :/
  24. There's a space pirate pig. Almost the same thing.
