  1. The designer's efforts are not meaningless because their system works as it should, and that's the reward. You can have fun with the game without knowing everything about its systems. Actually, it's very rare for an average player to even try to delve deep enough to understand everything. As long as it works, it's fine. This way of thinking is completely destroyed when the developers/designer/whatever suddenly decide to rewrite the game because they either didn't bother testing it, or just wanted to release as soon as possible. Suddenly your enjoyment is interrupted by massive nerfs, which you don't really expect from a single player game. And "literally half a year later", they are STILL doing nerfs and changing abilities that weren't touched since the game was released, although on a much lesser scale. If you feel like you're forced to tweak your game almost a year after it was released, you're a failure as a designer.
  2. Instead of only making games in genres they're good at, the developers try to expand into every popular genre, and usually fail miserably. Not only Obs but even Blizzard fumbled.
  3. In your opinion maybe. I value my time. I don't think there's a way to make TB better for someone who doesn't like it. It's not like TB in this game is worse than in other games of this type. It's a completely different playstyle, just like FIFA is different than Football Manager, even though they're both football games, and both of them have fans who tend to prefer one or the other. Like I don't see any value in understanding how mechanics interact with each other if it doesn't help me achieve my goals. Can I beat the encounter with basic knowledge? Great, then that's all I need to know. All that "knowledge" I could gain would become worthless the moment I finish playing the game, and it doesn't contribute in any way to my enjoyment, so why would I ever bother?
  4. Started playing Regalia: of Men and Monarchs recently. It's surprisingly fun.
  5. Oh so you now you can lower difficulty after you start on POTD?
  6. Idk man.. Do you play all these games though or do you just say they're bad because you see a wave of releases of games being released that you either know nothing about or that you have no desire to play? There's the difference. I filtered visual novel and dating sims out of my personal Steam search engine, as well as RPGmakers - this doesn't mean that people enjoy them for the reasons they were created for. There's no such thing as knowing that you'd hate something without trying it regardless of how much is passing through a gate unchecked, I'm not denying there are some garbage titles but it's not like Steam has more garbage circulating than on Origin/GoG or whatnot. Epic is newer so I can't really compare the catalog ratio when it only has a few games. People have the right throw a tantrum, Epic Games Store exclusivity on PC platform is quite different from consoe exclusivity - Perhaps it's not such a sheeple mentality when the games were announced and marketed specifically for/on Steam for say a year or longer and then drastically halted to do an Epic exclusivity announcement. Had these games been marketed for Epic directly, your point would stand but since the opposite happened, Valve and those whining brats are in the right. That's probably why members on this forum are going to skip (or wait rather) for Metro Exodus to release on GoG/Steam. If it was a Kickstarter game for Steam that suddenly went to Epic exclusively, the backlash would be even greater but still rightfully so. My own opinion is irrelevant in this because it's 100% subjective. Fact is, many of these new games get terrible ratings. Not surprising when you notice how they use the same assets from Unity store :D And I'm pretty sure Steam has more crap simply because it just has many more games, because as I've said, you can easily release whatever you want to in there. There is no quality control at all. Console exclusive game requires you to own a particular console. Epic shop exclusive game requires you to.. download Epic client. Wow, such inconvenience. Not like we don't already have Steam/origin/GoG right. One more is not a big deal, and you don't even have to open it after you install the game.
  7. I'm only talking about people who mindlessly follow mob mentality and don't think for themselves.
  8. Eh the fact is, there's a ton of games being released on Steam weekly, and most of them are really bad. And this is because it's currently VERY easy to release a Steam game - they barely even check it, and even if it doesn't conform to Steam guidelines, they will often just say "you should fix it, but it's ok if you don't want to". I've released a few games over the last 6 months and honestly this kinda shocks me how Steam goes for quanity over quality. People hating Epic are the same ones who a week earlier were screaming how terrible Steam is. Throwing silly tantrums is what that community does best. Funny thing is, after they're done crying, they will buy the game anyway, even if they have to download a different store client for that. Actually, it's currently really difficult to get your game on Epic store because they have high quality standards, but the stupid mob doesn't seem to realize that yet.
  9. At least GOG tends to have standards. You can sell whatever crap you want to on Steam. Finding a good new game on Steam is like swimming in poo trying to find a pearl.
  10. Whoa, nice. I think nostalgia's speaking here, though.. since Deadfire kinda modernized the mechanics.
  11. I feel like we're talking about different things. I'm ok with new stuff if it doesn't break whatever was available previously. DOS relaunches were separate games that had no effect on the "normal" title. Wasteland 2 was a complete remake, pretty much a different game altogether. There is nothing wrong with that. And fixing bugs should be mandatory. Samsies for turn-based in Deadfire. I clearly see why they added it and honestly it was a very good move to do it before console releases to avoid POE1 console fiasco. My problem is that this game is completely different gameplay-wise from when it was released, because a lot of things were completely overhauled (mostly a bunch of nerfs and unneccessary mechanic changes). I understand games doing updates, but have you seen 1.1 patch notes at least? And that was the first major patch, like.. a month after the release or so? And it was not even tied to any content updates, it was just a random major patch pulled out of someone's arse. Now, this is of course not a problem for turn-based mode, because all it has to do is sip the cream that all these patches put on the coffee, but it's hard not to feel like a beta tester after all these months. I mean come on. When 3rd DLC was released, I was like "ok finally time to play", and shortly after "SURPRISE MONK NERFS LUL".
  12. Launch day sales are important, but if that's all you're going to get, then there would be no point in developing the game further after release. Fact is, if your marketing is good enough, you will sell a lot of copies on Sales. Works for every platform. Unless the game flopped of course, then it's probably dead no matter what you do. Also, there are MMOs that actually can be played f2p after you buy it (meaning no subscription fee) and all you need to do is buy expansions, which is exactly how a single-player game works with DLC. "Used" might be an overstatement, but this simply confirms my resolve not to buy Obsidian games in the future until at least a year after they're released, which is when we finally get a finished product. Apparently.
  13. Console ports of isometric crpgs are usually terrible because RTWP on a gamepad is horrible. This one's gonna break the bank. You'll see.
  14. Ever heard about Final Fantasy XIV? It's a MMO game that, well.. did a major and drastic shake up, completely changing it. They called it Realm Reborn or something. Other games implement smaller changes over time, but they do - today's WoW is completely different than WoW 5 years ago, for example. MMO games MUST change and evolve to stay relevant. And best part is, these changes are tied to content updates, and aren't just random overhaul patches coming from nowhere. Single-player games, however, do not have to evolve in the same way. And yet we have one that is getting an MMO treatment. I mean, they just recently nerfed a Monk ability, that worked in its previous form since the game was released. It wasn't even overpowered. Who the hell does that. Single-player games don't have microtransactions, but they do have DLC. MMOs sometimes have both (hello ESO). Paid content is paid content. Obs released 3 new DLC and a new game mode. That's great. Now imagine how great it would be if all those balance patches were actually tied to these updates, not just thrown randomly between them. Like every MMO game ever does. And finally, they're coming out on consoles soon. And since they have turn-based mode now, I expect them to get some serious sales. With a polished game, that used us, PC players, as guinea pigs for balance and bugs. You might be cool with that, but I'm not.
  15. Multiplayer games are a different thing from a single player experience. That have different sales trends. Comparing this situation to multiplayer games-as-a-service is just being obtuse. Considering that this is probably the only single player game ever that gets as much balance patches as MMO titles, I don't see why wouldn't I compare.
  16. Do you have any evidence for this? Why would anyone do that? On the face of it, this sounds like another instance of "Anyone can say anything and very often does", although I could, of course, be wrong. It's conjecture, but likely accurate. Considering how much money people spend on gacha mobile games (and how many 200$ items I sold in Diablo 3), it wouldn't be surprising. O hey let me buy two copies so my GF and I can play! Also, LF minmax anal tips.
  17. This exactly. That turn-based mode will make their console sales skyrocket. I bet my ass that was the whole point of adding it.
  18. Ninjas are better than Pirates. I know because I saw a Ninja once but never a Pirate. Discuss.
  19. I can't take them seriously, they made Bard's Tale win "best remake" award. What the hell is Kenshi doing there :D The Bard's Tale remake is easily the best remake/remaster I've ever played and the best game in InXile's entire catalogue. Best joke I've heard all week. A ton of glitches, completely broken pathing, crashes that corrupt save files, terrible optimalization, combat that is basically rocket tag and very easy to exploit... do I need to go on? The game is 6/10 on Steam atm and that's pretty generous for this piece of crap. it's not a piece of crap - as slasher backer I enjoyed game from release date. You guys simply behave like a piece of crap every time you encounter a bug - stop with the childish behavior and enjoy the game. If you can't, maybe you should stop playing games. Most of them have many bugs and I can't see you enjoy what can be fully enjoyed due to your lack of understanding that many games have bug and will have bugs. There's a difference between "a bug" and "you just lost 10 hours of progress because the game permanently corrupted your save" or "you have to load that save you made an hour earlier because you just got stuck in a WALL". If you find this sort of behaviour acceptable, well good for you, but don't tell me what I should and should not do, mom. I can't take them seriously, they made Bard's Tale win "best remake" award. What the hell is Kenshi doing there :D The Bard's Tale remake is easily the best remake/remaster I've ever played and the best game in InXile's entire catalogue. Best joke I've heard all week. The game is 6/10 on Steam atm and that's pretty generous for this piece of crap. You do know that the The Bard's Tale Trilogy is not The Bard's Tale IV, right? Yeah you're right. I was confused because the Trilogy was not actually made by inXile (even if they did steal all the credit, but that's what publishers tend to do). But I see I was in the wrong here. At least I bashed the correct game!
  20. I almost mentioned it, but then didn't not because I personally consider that game a strategy game and not a RPG and TB never went out of fashion in that genre. I don't remember a western turn-based RPG reach mainstream popularity like Divinity Original Sin 2 did. Even TB JRPGs seems to have gained in popularity in the last few years (or at least people talks more about them), although that might be helped by all the Steam PC ports. Actually turn based jRPGs were always huge. Fire Emblem series, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vandal Hearts - just to name a few old school popular gems. I'd say that these kind of jRPGs are actually less popular now, if we're talking mainstream only. Other than Fire Emblem, which is still as strong as ever, only Super Robot Wars comes to mind. Maybe Disgaea too. I didn't say that tb JRPGs were not popular, I said they gained in popularity recently. They aren't just played by console weeb anymore. The mainstream gaming websites went gaga over Persona 5 and I don't remember anyone talking about Persona 4/3 in 2008 when it released for comparison. The RPG forums I hang out at used to be dominated by western RPGs (old school or action doesn't matter), since a few years ago 50% of the discussions and news posts are about JRPGs (not just TB) and the posters haven't changed. But Persona 5 is a different kind of a game. The characters don't move, there is no tactical grid or anything, the combat is purely ATB based, which is the most common jRPG system ever. I agree that the game was huge and it is all kinds of amazing, but it's not really an example of a turn based tactical RPG.
