Couldn't agree more. I prefer non-optimized parties. Keeps the game challenging.

Class Respec
Blades of Vanatar replied to Pope's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
I don't mind the respec option but tbh I never really use it. I like being stuck with the in game NPCs, like in the BG series or even old school games like the Shining Force. Makes it more challenging. Once I completely run through the various play through options I get tempted to respec when trying builds. Even then though... -
Give him the shod-in-faith boots until he hit level 7-8. It helps big time. After that he really gets Sturdy. One of my Favorite builds on this site.

Compromise between lore and game-play efficiency was inevitable! I just could not come up with a spear/pike Barbarian figure from Middle Earth. Perhaps Glorfindel "discovered" Aeglos; and he is sort of more aloof or mysterious than the other Elves we encounter. Okay, I am stretching it. I am still in Ciliant Lis, so maybe I can change? I could make Gimli a dual wield Barbarian instead of a dual wield Fighter and stick a 2nd Chanter as a Tall Grass 2nd-liner. But Tall Grass seems the most effective for a Barbarian - and frankly only truly effective for a Barbarian. And I really want a Tall Grass character on the 2nd line as a link between the front-line melees and the 3rd line squishies. Anyways, I can already see I need a lot more Accuracy later. My DW Paladin has like 31 percent hit chance against the big spider in Cliant Lis. WTF? Maybe I should have given him more Perception. I had 18 Might, 10 Constitution, 10 Dexterity, 12 Perception, 18 Intelligence, and 10 Resolve. I didn't want to dump any stat. Maybe reduce Might to 16 and increase Perception to 14? Also, will 10 Dexterity be a problem later, even if I have a lot of speed buffs? Couldn't come up with a Barbarian? Beorn! Or a as Druid.

Overall I am thrilled about this update..... but they can't come up with a better name than 'Contemplative' for a Monk Priest? It's... boring. This is a fantasy CRPG for crying out loud. We have the awesomeness of a Corpse Eater paired with a Contemplative? Come on Josh we know the team is much more creative than that! This game is going to have ENDLESS replay with all of the build choices. Oh YEAH!

It can be abused somewhat. Cast something that locks down the enemy in place like Web, Slicken or Stun/Prone, then cast an AoE damaging spell with duration, like Chillfog, then cast Combusting Wounds and hit them with tons of ranged speed weapons or blunderbusses or blast wizards. CW will keep triggering and triggering. Dead bad guys galore. Works great when you have bottlenecks like doorways that allows for the enemy to group. Not very Paladin-like I know.... the shame!

All characters have decent deflection in the late game. Barb may not have 'tank the Dragon' level deflection but will still have good deflection in the late game. By then your party buffs more than compensate anyway. It's only the early game when low deflection is even noticeable. So don't think Pallys have an edge there. They really don't by end game. Unless you are soloing. But that's a whole other topic. If you want two frontline tanks who can still deal DPS any combo of Pally/Fighter/Barb/Monk will work. I think high level Monks are the bomb tbh, solo or party. High level Fighters are awesome party members as are Barbs.

I think you overestimate Paladins and Chanters because of your dislike of micro. Wizards, Druids and Priests can all do absurdly high damage if you empty their spell books as fast as possible. Also, whilst Sacred Immolation is indeed a great damage dealing ability, Paladins aren't particularly great at single target damage dealing (Flames of Devotion is good but limited) and sometimes you simply need to focus an enemy down. This could be very well the case indeed! I will test spell spamming with the casters a few fights and compare. As for a Paladin's single target DPS: Aren't 2 FoDs per encounter usually enough for single target DPS? I do not know of any marathon boss fights as you find in other RPGs here. I suspect that a great many of those people do it because that's how they feel paladins should have been in the first place, rather than the leader/support class that the devs foisted on the players. Paladins may have "many other strengths", but I suspect that those are strengths that many players would give up in a heartbeat for a more offensively oriented paladin class. Oh, some of their abilities are nice enough, but it seems to me that if you really want a support second line support character that can do these things, a priest can do them just as well, even if he has to do them a little differently. I think that a lot of players would rather that the paladin class was a class of "holy warriors" (I use that term loosely...) than what they are today. And that's why I think you see a lot of players trying to play them that way, regardless of how the class is designed.People keep saying that Paladins are not a DPS class, but my experience is otherwise - albeit I am a newb. In my admittedly limited experience, they can do decent DPS until level 13 (Sacred Immolation), and they can match anyone after level 13. In fact, in my experience they do only mildly less DPS than a full-blown, dual wield/Dragon Thrashed DPS Chanter once they get Sacred Immolation. So I am having a hard time understanding people complaining about Paladin DPS. Moreover, and this is another angle, Paladins in most RPGs or MMORPGs are in fact low-DPS, support classes. So if anything, I think PoE gives it far more offensive tools than is usually the case elsewhere. And this is the PoE Paladin's biggest appeal for me in fact. Well.... when I think Paladin I think AD&D Holy Avenger.... which makes me think Mega Damage Dealer. My memory is failing, and I do not remember AD & D Holy Avenger - though I played AD & D - as well as its offshoot PC games. But I just do not recall any truly DPS-oriented Paladin class in PC games a least. Agree I always have one single target damage dealer. Usually a Fighter or a Rogue as they can both achieve extremely high ACC values against hard targets. Riposte rogues and DW Fighters have done the best job for me. Hmm, so Fighters do significantly more single-target DPS than Paladins? Where is the extra damage coming from? Weapon Specialization, and I guess faster swings from Armored Grace? Ultima. Wizardry Series (Lord). Holy avenger is the ultimate weapon vs evil in AD&D. Once a Pally finds one he becomes a killing machine. BG2 had Carsomyr, IWD 2 had one as well. In AD&D all warriors types are the DPS producers as they are the only ones with multiple attacks. Rolemaster has a more rounded Paladin like in PoE. We need a Rolemaster CRPG.

Ring of Searing Flames, Rotfinger Gloves and the Beetle Figurine are you're best friends for Act 2. Used correctly, you don't even need to engage in melee to win several of the Act 2 fights. Yes.... but I'm trying to win most battles keeping to my race/class abilities/talents. I know I will need to deviate a bit from that path though. I have the beetles and the animat figurines so far. Huge help rescuing the girl with papers for Dunstan. Now have shod-in-faith boots and closing in on lvl 6...

Snuck my way into Caed Nua and mostly past the shadows with the help of the Animat summoning horn.I'll need to respec, too many wasted points on stealth! Killed the spiders by fighting only two at a time. Took me three attempts to kill Maerwald. Now in Defiance Bay. Lvl 5. Have a hefty 147 Endurance after purchasing Bracers of All Consuming Rage. Mostly paid for by Osric!

I choose Fighter as I have tried various solos with Monk, Pally, Barb, Druid and Cipher. All were challenging but ultimately doable. I have always stopped half way thru on the Rogue. Chanter and Wiz seem to easy once you hit mid level. Fighter seems to be the challenge due to his lack of AoE power. I want to limit his scroll usage/ item cheese to boss fights of possible. Being a true dwarf and not some pansy-ass elfling.

Never solo'd a fighter. Not sure on how to build this guy and still be viable. I started with this build Boreal Dwarf Fighter Living Lands Laborer M 17 C 17 D 10 P 10 I 14 R 10 Knockdown Weapon and Shield Style Plan on Disciplined Barrage as next pick to help compensate for my average Perception score. But I am struggling on the future talents/abilities picks. I definitely want to try a W&S style fighter and definitely want to use either Axe, Wathammer, Flail or Mace as I find them fitting RP-wise for my Dwarf. So.... with those parameters firmly set I am looking for various Build ideas that be viable for this type of solo Dwarven Fighter in PotD. Obviously no Ab's Hammer as it it two handed. I was thinking Shod-in-Faith boots and Wound Binding to go along with my fighter recovery talent to cover my healing needs. Sanguine Plate to help speed me up. Rings of Protection and Deflection to keep my defense stats boosted. I think I will need some item that can do damage as I swing away to help compensate for a lack air damage. Thinking Muncara Arret to help add temp allies so I don't get overwhelmed. Suggestions?

Sigh... believe whatever makes you happy firkraag, I'm done with arguing with you over this.maybe if you tried intelligent communication instead of arguing like you yourself just admitted then you would have more success next timePot...kettle...black. Hil-ari-ous! Hey, that's being unfair to Jerek. I've yet to see him ever behaving in an "unintelligent" fashion - or unnecessarily argumentative. That wasn't a crippling strike aimed at Jerek. It was a wounding shot aimed at the Red Dragon.
