The Xbox 360 is not fully DX10 compliant and wont support all the features, but it does support some, and it also supports a few that wont be in DX10 (the first release anyway). What does the soundbite from the speech mean? I have no idea -- maybe MS is just now finishing up the API that will let developers make full use of the Xenos' features.

I'm not sure if winXP has the ablility to merge partitions, I know there are 3rd party programs that can do it though.
-
You might need to make another partition. Right Click on "My Computer" > select "Manage" Under "Storage" in the left menu, select "Disk Management" If my idea is correct, you should have one 137GB partition and a bunch of unused stuff. If you do, select the unused space and make a new partition -- if you don't have any unused space, I have no idea .

The console is still dead. They're just taking pre-orders for their keyboards, which they said they'd start selling. And they're now advertising a gaming service.. which others have already come out with and is no longer unique to the industry. The company has already frittled away so much money, I doubt they'd be able to repay their investors anytime soon... poor suckers.

My LCD can only do 60Hz, don't see what the point of getting more FPS per second then that is -- as it could only display up to 60FPS anyway. I've noticed that turning it on helps reduce tearing quite alot. Is there really a huge performance degredation? I haven't noticed one myself.. but maybe I haven't played enough games.

Like a lot of those Xbox live arcade games? -- I'm sure Microsoft is making a decent amount of money off those. More people making more games/mods for Xbox live can mean more money for Microsoft, they just need to add a "distribution cost" for the free ones. For those who want to sell their work, I'm sure Microsoft will have some "take a slice of the pie" deals ready. If the tools are horribly crippled though...

Sounds like a feature from a JRPG "

I was the same way until I received a nice 19" wide screen LCD as a present. The image quality is much (much) nicer.. granted it was an older CRT though, and I just love the extra space to work with. I wasn't able to really tell the difference until I saw them side by side. But now I can't go back to the CRT without noticing all the little flaws. I don't think I'd switch back to a CRT now, even though I know there are CRTs with better image quality (especially for professional uses). I've gotten used to the expansiveness that didn't exist on my old CRT (also 19").

Well, for some potentially good news -- this might not happen for awhile still. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060521-6880.html Reassuring, eh?
-
Yes, Microsoft will get people to switch in the following ways 1. Most newer computers will come shipped with it 2. Games will start requiring Vista to run (DX10) 3. Advertising 4. ? 5. Profit That's about how it'll all pan out.

you guys have it good That's me trying to imagine what some of the Obsidian devs might look like on their bad days.

I got all the way to the end of FF9, when I reached the final boss I realized I had no way of defeating him without some grinding / finding better items. I stopped playing after that. My friend brought his saved game over to show me the ending, made me glad I didn't spend any time grinding away.

Some time ago I bought a used PS2 -- its optical drive failed on me a couple months after purchase. It turned out the motor that moves the laser head foward and back had frozen up. I nudged it a bit and it works fine now. I'm crossing my fingers, hoping it lasts me a while longer still. It had the same symptoms that you describe, but there are so many little things that can go wrong in optical drives that I doubt it would be related.

Because some people find it fun. Don't see why you'd need much more of a reason. I like watching speedruns of almost any game, because I like seeing what trickery, loopholes and other crafty things they've come up with to complete the run.

Not quite -- Morrowind done in 7:30 http://speeddemosarchive.com/demo.pl?Morrowind_730 Edit: The speed runs for the Fallout games aren't much longer, fun to watch as well.

Three screen computing with any graphics card
LostStraw replied to Pidesco's topic in Skeeter's Junkyard
It's cheaper to have 3 smaller screens then one really big screen (less deffects and the like). It's also much more versatile to have 3 separate screens, they can be angled, moved, changed around with ease. They arn't very seemless with their borders, but I think the advantages of 3 screens over one giant one would outweigh the cons. Those 30 inch LCDs sure are pretty though . -

My points still stand.. except the one about no games supporting it. A few games it supports will look nice on it, all the other ones will be distorted and stretched out. As seen in the screenshots, in most games the FOV has set limits. These limits are something that can make me feel nautious in certain games (especially space sims) with only my current widescreen moniter. I wouldn't be able to stand it even more warped looking. -
I just ran into an external graphics card solution from Nvidia today. It's not for home users though, starting at $17,500. Here's the link: Quadro Plex [www.reghardware.co.uk] edit: Here's the link to Nvidia's page on it: NVIDIA Quadro Plex VCS [www.nvidia.com]

Three screen computing with any graphics card

It wouldn't work well for games at all. No games support the aspect ratio that this thing would use, everything would be very stretched out. If any games did support it, the resolutions needed to make it look nice would be large, requiring some major horsepower (as Bokishi mentioned). This would definitely be great for certain work places though. Having all that extra workspace to lay stuff out in without having to spring for a new video card would be nice. -
I'm not very surprised at those technical specs. After what was shown at E3, I figured it wouldn't be a very powerful system. What I'm worried about is how much those controllers will cost and how durable they'll be. If they cost a good chunk of money, the price advantage of the Wii's base system over the other consoles could vanish.
-
I was wondering this too. Are there problems with the length of wire as to why they couldn't just make something like a long extension from the video card to the PCI-E 16x on the motherboard? I'm not familiar with such things.
-
I'm kind of suprised that no one has produced anything like that yet. Even though it does mean more wires running here and there, I'd definitely spring for it. I have a thing for modularity .

After playing for a bit, I have to agree with you. Although I like how they took out some of the overbearing (not needed) complexity that was found in other games of the genre -- I think they went a bit too far.
