I take the opposite view where those "empty" areas provide an opportunity for exploration. To me exploration suggest there is something interesting to find (well constructed encounter, quest, unique event, nice location). Many of the wilderness locations were quite dull, with dull combat encounters. Hmm, well exploration means travel into the unknown in order to learn about it. The key work being travel. You don't have to find something deep and interesting every other minute; this isn't a music video. I'm fine with so-called "dull" wilderness locations because they highlight the interesting locales. That's what travelling the wilderness is like, and in that sense they're much like similar areas in Baldur's Gate. My preference would have been to include more such wilderness areas with a few interesting highlights. ok, the thing is I don't disagree. I like exploration, I like discovering thing. But I also don't like padding - just to be clear, I don't think Pillars had this problem. My issue with the "exploration" in PoE was that I rarely found something interesting. The special events were tied to quests, and therefore I knew I will find them there before venturing to said location. I was rarely surprised. Instead, I would just spent time looking for the objective without finding anything else worth finding. There were some cool stuff (Bleakwalkers in Margran Fork... and... a cave, and... Fulvano stuff... yhhhh... nothing else comes to mind) but not nearly enough for my taste. Just a lot of trash mobs, from which you don't get experience from defeating and which aren't too engaging to fight. I make it sound very bad. It wasn't bad. It wasn't bad, but more of what you said (Bleak walkers and fulvano) would be a great add to POE2

One of the things I really appreciated in POE was how most builds were relevant. You could be a total noob (as I was) and still create a decent character by allocating points in most stats, according to how you wanted to roleplay. Each stat had an effect and objectively, all stats were somewhat important to characters (of course, some more than others, ie Strength, Intelligence). Compare that to BG or DnD, where many stats are often useless (Wisdom, Charisma). Perhaps for min-maxers, the POE system was a failure, but for the rest of us, it worked just fine. One might argue that it needs tweaks, but to state that the devs are completely off the mark, I think is just false.

Have a look at the last two pages of this thread. Also: Hi guys! We are continually improving the Backer Portal, I don't believe we'll have a "pledge what you want" tier, but we may have something that will be to that effect. And since then there was no official mention of a "pledge what you want" option. OK cool, sorry, I guess I missed that part.

Backer update videos
dukeisaac replied to Borgur's topic in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Hey and welcome! Check this website out : https://www.fig.co/campaigns/deadfire and under updates, you should find all of them. Have fun ! -
Good question. I'm pretty poor with numbers, so if you're looking for definitive, empirical proof, I'm not the person for that. That being said, there's no question in my mind that chants and summons are powerful, especially in the harder/longer fights. He probably doesn't DPS as much as a fighter would, but he proved his worth, namely with the buff/debuff/summons. I do have a bias for support characters though. I play on POTD.

In my latest run, I built a full custom party in which one of my frontline tanks was a chanter. While he started out slow, he eventually became a very durable and powerful complement to the party (thanks Boerer for the inspiration and of course, Dragon slashed). Apart maybe for a few tweaks, I like the design of chanters as is in POE/WM.

Beautiful and challenging game
dukeisaac replied to Harshani's topic in Pillars of Eternity: General Discussion (NO SPOILERS)
Ah, I second that! The opening music of POE too... Man, I cant wait for POE2, I'm pretty sure I'll get that same feeling. And welcome to our new member! I hope you'll enjoy the game as much as I did. So far, it seems to be the case! -
Well put. This also gives me hope for PoE2, since the devs will be able to build upon this latest experience. I was speaking recently with someone who played vanilla POE and was disappointed by it. To them, POE was supposed to be BG3 or at the very least, a BG2 clone, a pretty impossible task according to me, given the circumstances of crowdfunding. So far, I feel POE2 is aiming for this kind of game.

Finished the game 4 times, twice before and twice after WM. In general, I loved the game (brought back BG2 nostalgia for me, even though there were flaws, reactivity and party dynamics being the largest ones). Loved combat, I felt it was challenging on POTD while being manageable if I applied myself. While the story was sometimes slow to pick up and never quite fully attached to the PC, I felt the plot as a whole was pretty strong. The late game reveals (which truly only appear in Twin Elms) were IMO very clever and opened a myriad of moral outcomes. The end slides were also very well done, compared to other games. I would strongly encourage anyone to finish the game, just for the reveals. WM is especially strong and most gameplay (encounters, reactivity, story, etc) mechanics are very well done. Its in my top 3 of favourite games ever (with BG2 and Battle Brothers, man that game kills me), with maybe the Civ series. If you have the time, do complete it, its definately worth it.

So, I just got confirmed for some work (yay), meaning I'll have some extra funds to spare, meaning... I'll pitch in probably next week (first pay check and all). As for in-game recognition, cool idea, but I'm not tied to it. My name will already be in the VIP credits, so I'm good. Personally, I'd rather that we pitch a common backstory or general setting for the BIB. For example, a crew of ten or twelve beached pirates with quirky attitudes who need to rescued. (Just an example)

I like Sagani, but one of the best? I like her character and her personal journey, but I thought the way her story played out was kind of dull, and she acts like a mere acquaintance than a friend to you (there no development between her and the watcher). I can think of MANY companions in an RPGs that are more interesting, especially from PoE1. I disagree, of course. I loved where her story went, and I don't think she was kept distant from the protagonist (more to this perhaps on The White March too). I'll quote the review I did for the game over at the "now playing" thread (linked here in case anyone else would want to read it), where I give my thoughts on her and Edér... Gotta agree with you. Sagani and Eder were by far my favourite companions, not only because of their simple yet fulfilling quests, but because of the emotional depth behind their characters. I also liked Kana, because I like goofy academics. In a companion, I tend to appreciate a strong emotional connection, be it positive or negative. I'm hoping we got more of that in POE2. So far, what the devs have revealed leaves me optimistic.

I don't recall if it was the case in POE1 (need to finish my latest playthrough I guess), but I also like a sound confirmation of crits, such has "ouh that's gotta hurt", or "a massive hit!". Often, I don't pause enough the game to follow everything that's going on in combat, so a sound cue of events is good.

Don't know if he had any response specifically in regards to criticism but when talking about it they've said they're 'experimenting' with the new system so if doesn't work they'll probably change it back. Josh Sawyer and Bobby Null both said in the 3rd Twitch Q&A that they preferred the POE1 health-endurance split. Presumably, if we keep voicing our preference for this mechanic, we will win the day. Also, there appears to be another Q&A tonight, so it might be a good question for someone to ask (not me, since I'll be in class)
