Cut content: Durance and Grieving Mother
b0rsuk replied to hamskii's topic in Pillars of Eternity: Stories (Spoiler Warning!)
Some content is cut just because it's bad. I don't like the zeal with which fans dig through the trash heap that is discarded ideas. Many times, unpublished works are simply not as polished. It's either the author that chose not to publish it, or the editor. Even if it was because of time constraints, they very rarely cut the best content. They try to cut what would be missed the least. -

In the initial conversation, Durance actually says something that he won't bother other party members much. He just cares about the watcher. -
Shouldn't Hiravias mind....(spoilers)

He's a bit more in character when you finish Sagani's quest with him in party. I haven't sided with the Dozens yet, but they clearly do expeditions for profit. Does Hiravias object to that ?- 4 replies

Priests may be the best force multiplier, but you get something like 5 * 2. With Paladin, you get something like 6 * 1.5. My point is that with a paladin you are not one man down. One priest is good, but I'd rather have two paladins than two priests (especially when Faith&Conviction is fixed for non-primary character). The class is not broken conceptually. Some numbers can be adjusted and it will be fine. I want single-target boosts to have enough power/duration that their slow casting is justified.

My only gripe with Durance, really. It makes no sense, either. Yes, he's a gruff survivor, but in battle-mode, you'd expect him to act more or less on instinct, being an old warrior, and actually display a lot of battlefield solidarity, even if he'd go back to his brooding I-hate-you-all and my-goddess-is-a-whore-that-abandoned-me afterwards. I'd simply expect him to act in his good interest. He complains when badly wounded, after all. Why does he expect others to help him with an attitude like that ? I could even understand he's happy when Eder dies (he calls him "Eothasian"). But he's going to be cut to pieces if he doesn't help others. He just sounds like a backstabber. Come on, at least pretend they're tools and meatshields. Otherwise, he doesn't sound like he has suicidal tendencies. So why ? Eder returns the favor by proposing that the dargul on the tower feeds on Durance, but that could easily be a joke. -
The Accurate Wounding Shot has already been reported as a bug. Speaking of hobbling, it occurred to me Ranger is really good at debuffing Reflex ! 1. (Accurate) Wounding Shot - Hobbled 2. Binding Roots - Stuck, and it targets the already debuffed reflex ! 3. Stunning Arrows - Stunned Simply great to set up a target for wizards and druids.

There are two more implications: * Gods can be destroyed (Fate of Eothas is not 100% clear, he's called Scattered God, not Dead God) * New gods can be created. Through Animancy. Think about god creation. The current gods are said to have limitations, they must act through avatars. The limit was probably placed on purpose. What if new gods are designed without it ?

It seems in 1.03 they've added a whole range of companion comments on effects like Poisoned, Stuck, Paralyzed. It makes it really hard for less perceptive players to miss those effect. Maybe a new line of companion comments is in line ? "This place is too hard, we should try something easier" when you run out of camping supplies. Maybe they would get the hint.

I'd use a fighter. Leather armor is great. 30% Recovery penalty, that's 15% with Armored Grace. Base DR is 6, but 9 against Slash, one of the most common damage types. Add slash-proofing: +12. The notable gap is Piercing damage, but that is easy to fix if you have a Druid in your party. Woodskin gives +6 Piercing DR in those fights that need it. It's weak to Corrode, but the only two notable enemies using it are banshees and the adra dragon. Carry a single suit of corrode-proofed armor and you're golden.

I disliked Athkatla in Baldur's Gate 2. Too many quests in very few locations. When I pick a few quest and just want to finish exploring the area, and do these quests, I get 40 quests on my way. I like this density more. What Defiance Bay COULD use, for sure, is more townsfolk. It DOES look empty. It also makes sense that Twin Elms is even less dense than Defiance Bay. It's not as urbanized, it relies more on hunting, and that's just not as efficient for feeding lots of people. Even districts are 1 hour away from each other. I would be happy to see more zones, though. I heard Twin Elms was supposed to get another zone, an overgrown graveyard, entered from the druid circle.

Longknife: Welcome back, Paladin ! I know why you are so drawn to this thread despite not contributing and lack of rational arguments. It's your paladin nature, you need to accept this. You simply stick to the same arguments you used on the first pages. I keep bringing new points of view and argumentation. Not you. "Paladins are awful" is your idée fixe. Very paladin-like. The only reason I haven't put you on ignore list yet is because it's more fun teasing you and exposing your logic gaps. You need something to bash. It can be paladin, but it can also be a class that is not monk. Monk deals like 10% more damage than class X, therefore class X is useless. Completely devoid of arguments. Nothing to comment here. You have a talent for ignoring whatever rational or factual there is about a post and only seeing the rest. I will demonstrate: 1. For example with my post a while ago. It was passionate because I enjoy teasing people who are not open-minded, but it also contained truth that paladins have a niche and arguably would be more interesting if they were strong within that niche rather than become like other classes. A melee fighter with support skills. Supports party members, especially melee ones, with strong single-target effects. I was only addressing first part of your post, the rest I didn't care about and didn't delete as much of it as it deserved. No conspiracy here. Pretty sure deflection is the category Fighters beat Paladins out on dude. It's the other defenses that Paladin excels in. I'm assuming you're arguing the deflection skill Paladins get at level freaking 9 is what makes Paladins better at deflection, but you fail to account for the fact that it's 20 seconds long, so Vigorous Defender competes with it and again makes Fighters defenses (ALL of them) superior, by your own logic. If you really wanna argue that Paladins have superior deflection because there's a 5 second window where they do, then lulz. 2. How can you possibly miss what he's talking about here ?? I'll spell it out to you: * paladins are essentially comparable to fighters in deflection. A few points here or there doesn't make a big difference. * paladins have vastly better other defenses, which also matter. * paladin boosts the group Righteous Soul may be a boring ability, but the defensive bonus is amazing. It would be an amazing skill if it came earlier. +15 to many of the most dangerous effects in the game, including Dominated, Charmed, Terrified, Frightened, and the lesser ones like poison and disease. It also shortens these effects by 5s. It's okay that you like fighters, but why don't you just leave paladins alone ? You don't have anything interesting to say. I'm sure paladins are going to get some buffs in patches. In the meantime, we enjoy paladins. The data is skewed towards fighters anyway, because Eder sits right there in the first village. You'd have to deliberately skip companions to play with Pallegrina on your first playthrough. It's deliberately the simplest class, and it's working. People like simple stuff that works and doesn't require much thought.

I used scientific method in reaching this conclusion. Anyone can replicate my results. 1. Go to the outrageously outdated wiki: http://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Status_Effects 2. Press "CTRL-F" and type "reflex" 3. Press the "Highlight All" button in the bottom left corner of Firefox window. You will note that there are many more Reflex debuffs than Will and Fortitude ones. Fortitude and WIll ones tend to come on the same effects - Charmed, Sickened, Weakened. Sagani can use Wounding Arrow to inflict Hobbled, which reduces Reflex and makes the target susceptible to Binding Roots. She can also use Stunning Arrows. Hiravius can use Sunbeam, which blinds and further reduces Reflex. There ARE some spells which target mental stats in a sneaky way, for example Miasma of Dullmindness simply drains -10 from three stats.

What abilities would you rather see on a ranger instead of animal companion ?

I have barely dabbled with PotD so far - but aren't wizards the worst casting class on PotD ? I mean, the primary difference between PotD and hard is monsters get much better stats across the board. If they have much better stats, they're much harder to enchant. Like every crappy and unfair RPG system ever designed, PoE has saving throws for negative spells. Buffs don't ever have to pass a defense throw. Priests have the most buffs among all casting classes. Druids are second. Wizards are last. Does this mean Priest > Druid > Wizard on PotD ? What's wrong with Druid as the sole healer ?? He has several healing spells, and good buffs like woodskin.
