Do You Have Video "Gaming Disorder," A Newly Recognized Mental Health Condition?

 

"Gaming disorder" isn't a game or the name of a game. And it isn't when your "Yes" or "Start" button on your PlayStation controller fails to work, your character is really messy and leaves equipment all over the screen, or you are surrounded by microwaved burritos while playing. Instead, the beta draft of the WHO's forthcoming 11th update of International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) now includes "gaming disorder" along with the following description:

 
Gaming disorder is characterized by a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour (‘digital gaming’ or ‘video-gaming’), which may be online (i.e., over the internet) or offline, manifested by: 1) impaired control over gaming (e.g., onset, frequency, intensity, duration, termination, context); 2) increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities; and 3) continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences. The behaviour pattern is of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning. The pattern of gaming behaviour may be continuous or episodic and recurrent. The gaming behaviour and other features are normally evident over a period of at least 12 months in order for a diagnosis to be assigned, although the required duration may be shortened if all diagnostic requirements are met and symptoms are severe.

They are different.

Drugs contain chemical component, so therapy may include microdosing or substitute.

Behavioral addiction may be result of some external factor, like stress, lonelyness, self image, social presurre, trauma.

So gaming therapy is less "just stop video gaming" and more "go party with drugs, overeating and risky sexual activity". That is what we call progress.

It is labrats conspiracy to leech cash for booze and new zelda, and seek corelations all day long. For science!

On the bright side they could confirm that something wrong is with society (can you imagine), and if we want teens play less, we need just give them alternative source of dopamine.

Rumor is that China is really pushing the gaming as a mental illness thing, which is why they are fast tracking it.

I thought they already had limits on how much time you could play online, I don't see how they need an excuse to further legislate video games.

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

Now that i'm comfortably retired and have the benefit of hindsight i'm thinking of labelling my entire working life as a mentally impairing condition.

 

As well as fatherhood.

 

Marriage.

 

Bank accounts, etcetera.

Quite an experience to live in misery isn't it? That's what it is to be married with children.

I've seen things you people can't even imagine. Pearly Kings glittering on the Elephant and Castle, Morris Men dancing 'til the last light of midsummer. I watched Druid fires burning in the ruins of Stonehenge, and Yorkshiremen gurning for prizes. All these things will be lost in time, like alopecia on a skinhead. Time for tiffin.

Personally I don't see anything compelling in this as an actually effective training tool, seems more like a cynical attempt to sell another "Ed-Tech" product to some publicly funded school district.
