Sorta. We were at Pendleton for what was called MCT and later SOI during that time, Jan. thru Mar. ... none of us deployed to Desert Storm but they issued active duty service ribbons. It was kind of a bare-bones training staff, since the regulars were in country.

It was interesting, we were in field gear, I remember at night, when they played Bush's address over the radio. I feel super old sometimes, too.

Boot camp, MCT & SOI all at Pendleton. I bet you were SICK of that place! At least we got a change of scenery.

Ha, weird but I never got tired of it. I turned 18 on rifle qualification day during Phase 2 of boot camp and never regretted it. Had I deployed to an active war zone, I might feel differently ... so I try to just be thankful to those who did.

My new laptop came today! I'm still not sure if it was the best choice, there's likely better price-for-performance machines out there, but I got a maxed-out Alienware 13 R1.5, basically it's got the broadwell chipset instead of skylake but has the 960m instead of the 860m even though the former is really just a slightly better clock of the latter, on a massive discount and I figured that, what the hell, it'd be taking a chunk out of my tax return but not all of it and I was due for a laptop upgrade anyways, seeing as my old one is dying, and it was a good enough deal that I can flip it if I don't like it and break even given current prices for used ones.

So far my first impression is that a 3800x1800 screen on a 13" laptop might not have been my best idea ever, although ext scaling helps a lot, and that I actually like having a touchscreen despite my many previous comments saying that they were silly in traditional machines. :ermm:

I feel old. I head it on the radio last week, The Gulf War ended 25 years ago on 2/28. Jeez. Am I really that old?

But now Gifted1 & Shady Sands can feel old. I believe they were both there too.

You know, in my head I'm still a young buck but then you get reminded how much time has passed. Getting old is the worst.

Just for embarassment here is a picture of me during my first tour of Iraq in 05

The Commandant was in the area for a photo op so they gathered everyone up for group pictures

I'm pornostache on the far left and the Commandant and SMMC are the two without flak jackets

Dang, I quickly guessed you were the dude kneeling on the left.  Marine on the right is a giant.

Speaking of camo, apparently wearing some sort of pseudo-ACU pattern is in fashion here, weird. :p

I was brushing my teeth the other day and took a good look and my face in the mirror. I look just like my father did now. How the heck the that happen? But if I'm having a mid-life crisis of some kind I'll just drown it in good bourbon. That does not solve any problems true. But it does offer a respite.

Nice one Shady

You say your first tour? Were 2 years at a time so does that mean you also went in 07?

Well, most of my unit went back to the states after 6 months or so in the first deployment but along with a few others I volunteered to stay the whole year of 2005 (plus or minus a few months). The second deployment was in 2007 and it was a mandatory year for everyone but it was also a much easier time. I came back in Jan-Feb of 08 and got out in December

Did the Career Jammer give you the works to try to keep you in?

Yeah, at first anyway

At the time they were giving out huge bonuses and other perks but I was done and since a lot of people in my unit were afraid of their prospects after getting out they stopped chasing me. They could probably also tell they were barking up the wrong tree or at least I'd like to give them that much credit

I'm glad that I did it and I miss some aspects of it but I'd never want to go back to it. Especially since I vastly preferred deployment to garrison life.

I did ~7 years and made E5 in that time. Sometimes I wonder if I should have just done my 20 and retired out at 38 years old. I wonder what the monthly payout is assuming I would have topped out at E6? Enough to live on or you would still need a job after retiring? Joining the military was one of the best decisions Ive ever made.

At my agency, I'm working with a gov contractor in the next office over who retired 20 years ago with 20 years as an E6 in the Navy.

Of course, he says he's using this job to pay off his monthly AMG payments...so I don't really know too much about his financial situation. I suppose his high 3 would be a matter of public record considering his rank/grade and retirement year...

If he joined 40 years ago then he should get half the final pay rather than high 36

Just to throw some numbers out there, if Gfted1 retired today as an E-6 after 20 he would be looking at about $1,862 a month which is great as extra money but probably not enough to live on alone

Does he get that as soon as he retires, or does he have to wait until a certain age?

I looked it up once for teaching, if I retired today I'd get about $1500 a month, but not until I turn 55 or 56.

You get it as soon as you retire and it increases every year. It's a really good gig if you like being in the military and all that comes with especially if you can climb the ranks. Also, it goes up 2.5% for each year over 20 so if you can do 40 years you'll end up with (near because of high 36) 100% of your base pay. Mind you almost nobody does 40 years and those that do are the Sergeants Major, Generals, and Chief Warrant Officers and even then it's iffy

Doing 1.3 mi on the treadmill each night and legs no longer pain. Have bad luck to be knock-kneed and have a short leg

But is something to do each night while the laundry goes.

Tomorrow morning I'm getting up early, packing coffee, lunch for both me and the dogs, and my fishing gear and we're going to follow Cold Creek to the Hatchee River and do some fishing. All day. I can't wait.

Couldn't do it. It stopped being itchy and scratchy, but it refused to grow right. I mean it grows right, left, up and down, backwards. I was stoked for awhile, getting carded to buy beer with a beard, but like wearing shorts, some guys just shouldn't attempt hair face.

I finished MGSV ... 50 Missions, 157 Side Ops. Soporific sleeping gas mines are best mines. The Skulls suck ass.
