We were at Pendleton for what was called MCT and later SOI during that time, Jan. thru Mar. ... none of us deployed to Desert Storm but they issued active duty service ribbons. It was kind of a bare-bones training staff, since the regulars were in country. It was interesting, we were in field gear, I remember at night, when they played Bush's address over the radio. I feel super old sometimes, too. Boot camp, MCT & SOI all at Pendleton. I bet you were SICK of that place! At least we got a change of scenery. I'm still not sure if it was the best choice, there's likely better price-for-performance machines out there, but I got a maxed-out Alienware 13 R1.5, basically it's got the broadwell chipset instead of skylake but has the 960m instead of the 860m even though the former is really just a slightly better clock of the latter, on a massive discount and I figured that, what the hell, it'd be taking a chunk out of my tax return but not all of it and I was due for a laptop upgrade anyways, seeing as my old one is dying, and it was a good enough deal that I can flip it if I don't like it and break even given current prices for used ones. So far my first impression is that a 3800x1800 screen on a 13" laptop might not have been my best idea ever, although ext scaling helps a lot, and that I actually like having a touchscreen despite my many previous comments saying that they were silly in traditional machines. 1 "Geez. But now Gifted1 & Shady Sands can feel old. I believe they were both there too. You know, in my head I'm still a young buck but then you get reminded how much time has passed. The second deployment was in 2007 and it was a mandatory year for everyone but it was also a much easier time. Yeah, at first anyway At the time they were giving out huge bonuses and other perks but I was done and since a lot of people in my unit were afraid of their prospects after getting out they stopped chasing me. They could probably also tell they were barking up the wrong tree or at least I'd like to give them that much credit I'm glad that I did it and I miss some aspects of it but I'd never want to go back to it. I wonder what the monthly payout is assuming I would have topped out at E6? Enough to live on or you would still need a job after retiring? Joining the military was one of the best decisions Ive ever made. At my agency, I'm working with a gov contractor in the next office over who retired 20 years ago with 20 years as an E6 in the Navy. Of course, he says he's using this job to pay off his monthly AMG payments...so I don't really know too much about his financial situation. It's a really good gig if you like being in the military and all that comes with especially if you can climb the ranks. Also, it goes up 2.5% for each year over 20 so if you can do 40 years you'll end up with (near because of high 36) 100% of your base pay. I was stoked for awhile, getting carded to buy beer with a beard, but like wearing shorts, some guys just shouldn't attempt hair face. I finished MGSV ... 50 Missions, 157 Side Ops.
